25.01.2022 As the UN Climate Change Conference #COP26Glasgow gets underway, it is time to consider timber. The construction and built environment sector is responsible for approximately 40% of global energy related CO2 emissions, with a significant percentage of this arising from the extraction, processing and energy intensive manufacturing of building products. To achieve net zero CO2 emissions by 2050, construction must rapidly decarbonise whilst still meeting the needs of a growing... urban population, the increasing demand for new buildings and the urgent requirement to renovate existing buildings. Wood is #TheUltimateRenewable. Timber is the only sustainable structural building material that grows worldwide and which can enable a substantial decarbonisation of the built environment. Read more about the World of Wood Festival's Time for Timber manifesto, and how we can grow a low-carbon future, here: https://bit.ly/3nMTyx7.
24.01.2022 Queensland’s entire timber industry supports around 25 000 jobs and an extensive local industry supply chain lots of people involved, with many industries (growing, harvesting, log freight, processing, wholesaling etc.) in one. When we think about how this supply chain is impacted in relation to using Queensland grown and processed product, we can see that the full supply chain from growers right through to our end users are engaged when using state grown and processed product. However - when we use products from interstate, this cuts out around a third of the local supply chain.
24.01.2022 Today we celebrate International Day of Women 2021 and the contribution and meaningful work of women and girls across all sectors. Timber Queensland, Women in Forests and Timber Network QLD and our wider industry specifically celebrates today the work of our female scientists. This year's theme is #ChooseToChallenge - and we challenge women and girls to consider a career in the forest. Forestry is such an exciting sector to work in because it provides challenging work using innovative technology and a great balance of being in the great outdoors and an office environment." - Clarissa Brandt, TQ Strategic Relations & Communications Manager. 23.01.2022 While prefabricated construction methods have taken off in recent years, you still can't beat the flexibility of timber framing for residential construction. Carpenters are familiar with the modallity and can make changes on site, where extra timber is readily available.

22.01.2022 The hardwood floors have been laid by Scribed Flooring at the TQ Timber Hub and are now awaiting final stage sanding and oiling. Our picks for timber flooring species: Engineered Blackbutt by Boral Timbers. Blackbutt is a highly durable species so great for a high traffic area like the kitchen, as pictured. Spotted Gum flooring by Parkside Timber. This species is dense and largely scratch resistant, so ideal for this large office space area that will be furnished. ... Darwin Stringybark flooring by Dtm Timbers - a durable boutique native timber species that adds a point of difference to the overall look of the Hub.
22.01.2022 In Queensland, we are a primary processing industry. Data collected in partnership with industry and the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries shows just how many mills (over 100) and jobs (over 3500) just the processing industry and its "link" in the chain alone supports. The mills are the lifeblood of many small towns. Key regions with jobs dependent on forest and timber industry processing include areas such as Gympie and Maryborough in South East Queensland, the Tablelands and Mareeba in Far North Queensland, as well as key centres in the Maranoa and towns such as Roma and Injune. So the next time you have the opportunity to influence or make a choice about purchasing a timber product, have a really good think about the impact of your choice. It can make a difference from little things big things grow.
21.01.2022 In addition to traditional stick and post timber framing, timber frames can still be prefabricated. This offers you the complete package - the efficiency of offsite prefabrication delivered ready for install, combined with the fact that most builders are already intimately familiar with timber framing, the framing code and their assembly.
20.01.2022 Queensland grown, Responsible Wood certified, Araucaria pine - grown and harvested by HQPlantations, and peeled, laminated and finished by Austral Plywoods - has made it to the high seas of the Pacific Ocean. Tom Robinson, the youngest rower to attempt a Pacific crossing from South America to Australia, will do so in a timber boat - the Maiwar - he designed and handbuilt. The solo journey, from Peru back to Brisbane, will commence in January and is expected to take nine mont...hs. Before embarking, Tom visited HQPlantations' Blackbutt Araucaria plantation forest to learn more about the source of the timber used to create superior AAA marine ply products, and the vessel he will call home for most of 2022. Watch Tom's visit, and learn more about HQP, their sustainable forest practices, and Tom's Maiwar here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttREX8pac0s

18.01.2022 Ready, set, reno - timber framed houses are ideal for renovations. Other types of framing are welded into place and set in stone. 14.01.2022 Timber framing has come a long way from the creaky Queenslanders of the past. Timber is strong and seasoned, so it won't shift and crack over time. Queensland timbers are grown in and to withstand our climate and temperatures - you can be sure that locally grown and processed framing is your best bet for a durable home that withstands the test of time.
11.01.2022 Happy International Women's Day. Today we recognise the valuable contribution that females make to our workplaces. Queensland's forest and timber industry has a strong representation of women across roles from policy, forestry, engineering, wholesale, through to marketing and administration. These women #ChoosetoChallenge the norm by taking on important jobs in our traditionally "male" industry. You can follow Women in Forests and Timber Network QLD to keep up to date with, meet and network with these like-minded women - and to help support other disadvantaged women by getting involved with the WFTN's charity work.
11.01.2022 With the arrival of the HomeBuilder grant affording many Queenslanders the opportunity to embark on a new home build, why not consider the sustainable choice - timber framing.
11.01.2022 A Wednesday wellness reminder to bring the outdoors in

07.01.2022 We've all heard about the favourable environmental and carbon footprints we leave when we build with wood. But what about timber's economic footprint? COVID-19 has reframed ideas around consumer choice. Now more than ever it pays to buy local, and the flow on effect from your choice of building material through the entire local supply and value chain is significant. Over the next week, we'll be sharing some of the facts and figures highlighted in Timber Queensland's recent "Your Guide to Buying Local: Understanding the Timber Supply Chain" webinar to help you make impactful purchasing decisions. As always, you can find out more at: www.buyqldtimber.com.au.

02.01.2022 The wider forest and timber industries congratulate New Zealand on a new national low carbon construction procurement policy, which requires the construction option with the lowest upfront carbon emissions be considered first and encourages the use of more sustainable building materials such as wood. New Zealand follows countries such as France, Japan, Canada, Australia, & the US with similar policies.
