25.01.2022 This looks like fun from Scattered Arts.

25.01.2022 If you are at a loose end this weekend it's a great opportunity to start or finish your entry for the Scattered Arts/BVAC competition. $1000 best in show prize available plus further $100 prizes for section winners and BVAC members. https://scatteredarts.com.au/index.php/2020-competition/

25.01.2022 Western Suburbs Clayworkers are holding their annual members exhibition on October 10 and 11 at the Richard Randall Gallery at the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens.

25.01.2022 How many ways can you say it with flowers? Art West Community Gallery at Mt Ommaney Shopping Centre is saying it with flowers - that is "Florals" - at the moment, and it seems that there are so many ways to do it. All original too.

25.01.2022 The Metcalfe Gallery at the Brisbane Institute of Art is the venue for this year's Ceramic Arts Queensland annual member's exhibition. Well worth a visit.

24.01.2022 How good is this? After the ABC put out a call, the quilt squares came pouring in. Our friends at Queensland Spinners Weavers and Fibre Artists joined the fun by joining together the squares. Wonderful work.

23.01.2022 Just something for the potters in our groups.

23.01.2022 Glory Days: Brisbanes Art World to 1970 Wherever people create art there is an art world. Some art worlds are very successful, others less so. Glory Days tells the story of Brisbanes expanding art world after 1940 when artists groups finally took action to curb the inevitable drift of Queensland artists to the better resourced art worlds of Sydney and Melbourne. The Royal Queensland Art Society (RQAS) decided that something needed to be done to keep a young Margaret Olley w...orking here in Brisbane. It was a lack of art education facilities in Brisbane that drove Olley away in the end. Next, a member of the society decided that Brisbane needed more that one two week exhibition of art per year, so she, E Lilian Pedersen, set up a group for professional artists that became known as the Half Dozen Group of Artists. Both groups are still going strong. Two more groups developed in the 1940s. Miya Studios interesting experiments with modern art created controversy after they split from the Younger Artists Group that had been set up by the RQAS in 1945. Miya Studio was interesting enough to lure Sydney Nolan and Charles Blackman to come to Brisbane to work for a time. Painting became a world wide craze in 1950 and Brisbane finally got an alternative to the very academic Central Technical College Art Branch in George Street. St Marys Studio in Kangaroo Point became the alternative centre for art in Brisbane with a series of artist/mentors providing a modern art education. The studio eventually gave rise to the Contemporary Art Society that was influential in the 1960s. The Glory Days of Brisbanes art world also include the investment in Queensland art by the Carnegie Corporation of New York; the Johnstone Gallery, which at one time was the largest commercial gallery in Australia; the department store gallery in Finneys Department Store; and the Permanent Exhibition of Queensland Art with its hire purchase scheme for buying paintings. A great deal of art history is written around the dynamism and creativity of avant-garde artists and groups. Non-revolutionary community artists groups, on the other hand, not even mentioned, but they are in fact very important to any art world. Artists who belong to these groups produce the majority of work in any art world: they till the soil of the art landscape by encouraging many to engage in the practice of art-making thus creating a richer, deeper, and more receptive art world. The cover shows The Paint Tree, an icon of Brisbanes art world. Between 1951 and 2010, many artists added paint to the surface as they cleaned their palettes at St Marys Studio. The book will be available soon from bookshops at a cost of $34.95. I also have copies for sale and will be visiting various artist groups if you wish to purchase an inscribed copy. 18.01.2022 A big shout out to the members of the Creative Glass Guild who visited the Brisbane Portrait Prize today. Catherine Conaty (tutor from the Guild) and I were the BPP volunteers on duty this morning. Lovely to see a group outing like this. Perfect photo opportunity and we didn't think of it. The Brisbane Portrait Prize is on until November 1 at the Powerhouse.

17.01.2022 Good afternoon all. This is probably the least sexy post ever but informative. I have placed two black rubbish bins downstairs near the fridge. These are for you to place empty cans and plastic bottles to be recycled. ... I will empty these each Monday morning. This program is to fund the use of our lift, which has added extra costs to BVAC so it helps take the financial pressure off. Its also good for the environment. Thanks for your co-operation

17.01.2022 They'll need a BIGGER bed!!!

17.01.2022 Just like the quilt, the whole story is coming together.

15.01.2022 Just a little inspiration for our makers in wood. I can see why this piece didn't even make it to the shelves. Very creative.

14.01.2022 The Brisbane Portrait Prize has once again thrown up some wonderful and unusual portraits. 766 entries were received - 672 in the open category and 94 in the new under 18 section. Will be on show at the Powerhouse from September 30 to the end of October, if anyone would like to visit while I am there to talk about the work.

14.01.2022 Clay Gulgong is an example of what one person can do with a great idea. First share the idea with friends - then all go to work to make it happen. There is no instruction manual on how to do this - you try stuff and if it works you keep going. Clay workers throughout the world look forward to Clay Gulgong in the Hunter Valley town of Gulgong.

11.01.2022 A steady stream of art lovers to the Auditorium, Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens this afternoon. So much to see past the sign in (Thank you, Covid). You will be amazed by the range of traditional arts and crafts being revamped for our modern life. Espresso coffee cuddle cups? Tote bags for every fancy? It's all at the BVAC Christmas Pop-Up shop, Auditorium, Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens this weekend. It's soooooo good that it might be hard to find your perfect gift.

08.01.2022 For those who weren't there at the BVAC Pop-Up Shop this afternoon. Anna-Margot Collins from the Queensland Enamellers Guild was acknowledged for her commitment in getting the BVAC Christmas Pop-Up Shop over the line of COVID restrictions. Anna-Margot met challenge after challenge to get approval for this BVAC Pop-Up Shop. She finally succeeded with approval for the event being granted at 9.30 pm on Thursday 18 November. BVAC's Pop-Up Shop was the first large scale event staged at the Auditorium since the first lock-down. I am proud of her, and her dedication to BVAC, and to providing a first class event. If there were any shortcomings in the staging of the event, I'm sure they pale into insignificance considering the obstacles that were overcome. Bravo Anna-Margot.

07.01.2022 Sue Ford and her group at the Slab Hut in Samford were instrumental in helping to get BVAC up and running. They offered their financial support and Sue prepared all the documents for incorporation. Thank you Sue.

07.01.2022 There are some very interesting points made by Juggler's Art Space. I thought it was worth sharing. Take what you will from it.

07.01.2022 This is what our groups are about - providing concentrated expertise when needed in the fields of art and crafts. Congratulations to the QSWFA for raising your profile in the community to a level where you are recognised as a hub of expert creatives in textiles.

And to our customers we thank you for all your support without you we couldn't keep buying supplies to do what we do. Hope to see you all again at the BVAC open day and the 2 pop-ups next year. 03.01.2022 Western Suburbs Clayworkers annual Exhibition - Richard Randall Gallery, Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens. October 10 and 11. Always a great event.

03.01.2022 Anyone who works in the visual arts should be interested in this interview with ceramicist Paul Button from the Northern Rivers of NSW. As visual artists in Brisbane, we are well aware of the difficulties in finding a space, with the necessary facilities, to exhibit our work on a regular basis in Brisbane. The visual artists of the Northern Rivers have just had the goal posts moved in relation to their community gallery - according to Paul, it is moving toward the set up of a... Regional Gallery rather than being for their community of local artists. Karena Wynn-Moylan from Bay FM (99.9) interviewed Paul Button today about the Northern Rivers Community Gallery. You can hear the interview with him on this link: https://programs.bayfm.org/arts-canvass/2020-05-28 The interview was aired at 9.40.35am, so press play and then go to that time to listen! See more

03.01.2022 Monte Lupo is a supported studio at Eight Mile Plains that provides a sustained creative environment, fostering and supporting the individual practice of visual artists with disability. I am very familiar with their entries in the Swell Sculpture Festival at Currumbin Beach always wonderful but this looks exciting too.

02.01.2022 While BVAC was trying to sell this weekend, the Creative Glass Guild was getting on with the making.
