12.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who came by to taste these exceptional wines on tastings this weekend, we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did! Want to know more about your new favourite drop? A great read below about Mazza Wines! Why did you decide to plant Spanish and Portuguese varieties?... We were living in London when we bought the farm in 2000 and intended to plant mainstream French varieties like Merlot and Shiraz. But London opened up a huge world of wine to us with wonderful bars and restaurants serving fantastic wines from all over Europe. So our ideas changed. And our travels changed those ideas even more. Dave fell in love with Touriga Nacional and Bastardo on a trip to Porto (for their flavours and versatility to make both Port and delicious table wines). Anne was smitten with Tempranillo so we visited Rioja - and then Graciano was added to the list too. When it came time to plant the vineyard we realised we wanted to make the kind of wines we liked to drink. Which meant we needed to plant the varieties that made those wines. No-one had ever planted those varieties in our region before so we hesitated. And did a bit more research. We discovered that Porto and Rioja are climatically similar to Donnybrook with similar rainfall and sunlight hours - and then one line from Dr John Gladstones suggested that Donnybrook would be an excellent location to grow varieties for fortified wines EUREKA! We decided to give it a go. So next trip back to WA we went went searching for cuttings of Iberian varieties and found the six we have today - Tempranillo, Graciano, Touriga Nacional, Bastardo, Tinta Cão and Sousão. And why no whites? Well - we couldn’t find any white Spanish or Portuguese varieties to propagate back in 2001. We do have a white variety growing now - but that’s another very interesting story... Fun Fact - Mazza Wines specializes in growing Spanish and Portuguese grape varieties which were first planted in 2002 at the property in Queenwood near Donnybrook. David and Anne decided to plant these varieties after discovering fantastic Spanish and Portuguese wines when they lived in London in the late 1990's. They discovered that Donnybrook is very similar in climate to parts of northern Spain and Portugal - so decided to see if they could grow the varieties that made the wines they loved to drink. #LuvvaLocal #BWSTastings #ComeSeeUsInStore
