11.01.2022 Yesterday I had the honour of doing a special set of nails for friend November is FOXG1 Awareness Month! To bring awareness to FOXG1 Syndrome, here are a few facts. What is FOXG1 Syndrome?... A rare neurodevelopmental disorder that impacts brain development and function caused by a mutation of the FOXG1 gene, which is located in the band 14q12 on the long arm of chromosome 14. There are several types of mutations of the gene and symptoms fall along a spectrum of mild to severe. Research is showing that FOXG1 plays a role in autism, Alzheimer's, schizophrenia, and epilepsy. Most mutations are de novo meaning the parents are not carriers and it happened at random. Common brain characteristics are a thin or underdeveloped corpus callosum which connects the two hemispheres of your brain reduced folds and grooves on surface of brain and decreased white matter. Often characterized by seizures, movement disorders, and lack of speech. Many cannot sit or walk without assistance and lack purposeful hand use. Many are fed by a feeding tube. Brain-based vision impairments often present. Gene therapies are very real and curing many diseases right now! Scientists are moving into testing drugs soon on animal models and in other ways, but they rely heavily on our donations to continue working! Sadly her battle ended 3 1/2 years after her diagnosis, just 3 days after her 46th Birthday. We miss you every day Mum xx... **Ovarian Cancer is known as a silent killer. There is still no early detection. A cervical screening test (formerly known as a pap smear) does NOT detect ovarian cancer. There is NO effective screening test or preventative vaccine for ovarian cancer. The best way of detecting the disease is to know the signs and symptoms and be aware of any changes in your body. ~4 woman every day will be diagnosed with ovarian Cancer in Australia. ~3 women every day will die of ovarian Cancer in Australia. ~ Currently only 46% of women diagnosed will survive past 5 years. **When detected in stage 1 more then 90% of women will survive....
