One of the most little talked about aspects of this whole story is the utter madness of sending 11 ships and 1500 people across the world to make a colony based on such a paltry account. This and other evidence has led some historians to assert that economic exploitation and nation building was very much a secondary concern for the British at this early stage, lagging far behind the need to replace the now independent American colonies as a destination for the unwanted masses of destitute people packed into slums because of Enclosure and the Industrial Revolution. Something sobering for Anglo-Celtic Australians to ponder on January 26 along with invasion!
