25.01.2022 Little 'Spike' makes wearing a muzzle look so cute and fashionable! He was not entirely enthused by the idea of having a vaccination and manicure, but behaved like an absolute angel once he had his 'party hat' put on. We often find the little dudes with attitude behave like superstars when they have a muzzle on, and often are even better still, when we 'take them out the back' away from their family. It seems hard to fathom that they'd be better without the comfort of their pet parents, but we see it on a daily basis. It's great option, especially if we can make it a less distressing experience for them too!
25.01.2022 Party time for Byford Veterinary Hospital as we celebrate Vet Nurses Day with lots of delicious food and plenty of cocktails!

20.01.2022 Cat obesity Is your cat obese? Find out more about how to keep your cat healthy and how you can help your obese cat in our expert guide.... Should I worry about my cat's weight? Extra weight can reduce your cat's quality of life. Is your cat overweight? Helping your cat stay healthy includes making sure they get plenty of exercise and don't overeat. You can help an obese cat lose weight, but prevention is better. Cats that have been overweight are likely to regain weight in the future. Overweight cats are usually defined as being more than 15 per cent over their ideal weight. Obese cats are more than 30 per cent over their ideal weight. You should be able to feel your cat's ribs easily when you stroke their body lightly and you should clearly see a waistline when you look at them from above. Cats under two years of age are less likely to gain weight. Between two and 10 years of age, cats use less energy so are more at risk of becoming overweight. Senior and geriatric cats - aged 12+ - tend to be underweight. Stress can be a factor in overweight cats. If your cat is overweight, consider their diet, lifestyle, environment and the placement of their food, water and litter tray. Health risks faced by obese cats Being overweight can reduce your cat's quality of life. For example, they may struggle to move or groom themselves properly. Overweight cats are prone to joint problems and have an increased risk of developing weight-related illnesses such as diabetes mellitus and urinary infections. Help your cat lose weight If your cat is overweight, ask your vet for advice on an appropriate feeding regime to ensure they get enough nutrients, without being overfed. Weighing food out daily is a helpful way to control portions. Some dry foods come with calibrated scoops, but these are easy to overfill. If you like to give your cat treats, reduce the amount of normal food you provide. Never starve overweight cats or put them on 'crash diets'. Any period of time without food can potentially be dangerous. A slow, steady weight loss is ideal. It can take as much as a year for a severely overweight cat to reach its ideal weight. It is hard to notice weight change in a cat you see every day, so regular weighing is a useful way to monitor progress. Your cat probably won't sit still on your scales, so weigh a carrying box or yourself, then weigh the cat in the box or while holding it and subtract the excess to get your cat's weight. Some vet practices offer weight clinics, where they can regularly weigh your cat using their specialist scales. #catcare #hereforthecats #healthycat #catadvice

12.01.2022 Spring has definately sprung! But with that, come the warm weather nasties! Please ensure your yards are tidy and safe for the coming months. Our first grass seed patient came in last week, a poor kitty with a grass seed stuck in her eye. Thankfully we were able to remove it, and she is doing well! Inspect your pets daily, especially if you have a lot of grass seed in your yard, or where you go walking.
11.01.2022 With the warmer weather we are seeing a number of grass seed cases at the clinic. Grass seeds are capable of penetrating the skin and boring their way into internal organs. Common places we see grass seeds are in ears, up nostrils, between toes and sometimes in eyes! We encourage you all to regularly and thoroughly check over your pet for any lumps, bumps and seeds.... If your pet is head shaking or sneezing we recommend you bring your pet in for a check up with the vet. These nasty seeds can do lots of damage. Enjoy the warmer months with your beloved pet grass seed free!
