24.01.2022 Why We Give Up?! Craig breaks this beast into two part, part 1 is linked below. If you are struggling to get all those ducks in place or keep your intial commitment ontrack, then this is a must listen! It's free, insightful and maybe help get you back on the rails. ... So test what's left of your resolve and listen up NOW, ...not tomorrow, NOW!

24.01.2022 Planning your Cheat Day/Meal To help you create a plan to factor in a big 'meal/alcohol day in calendar, I've gone through EXACTLY how you can prepare for that meal or day and avoid any anxiety, stress or guilt due to be ill-prepared, completely unprepared or simply being too lazy to prepare at all. Enjoy.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6-61fMSUW0

23.01.2022 Foodgasm - Unreal French Toast I've been nuancing my version of French Toast over the last few weeks to create a low cal, high protein and DELICIOUS breakfast option. All is revealed in the video, enjoy :) https://youtu.be/35o_d7JV6VA

22.01.2022 Lift Yourself Up (quite literally!) The Rush (Endorphins n Stuff): After weight training for over 30 years, I still get the same rush, sense of achievement and satisfaction since I began lifting, maybe even moreso. ... These days weight training adds "Iron Therapy" to it's long list of benefits. I can achieve a deep level of mindfulness that is almost meditative, creating a paradoxical blend of calm and calamity, one rep at a time. Regardless, of what's happened in my day, the worries and stressors fade away with each repetition, each skin-to-metal application of strength, power and effort. Most every session leaves me feeling reinvigorated and simmering quietly as the endorphins trickle through from top to toe. In those times when "the world" and the static of distraction keep scratching away at my psyche, I still push on with a 'workman-like' attitude and at the very least, finish with a sense of achievement. For many however, me included, creating additional goals intertwined with overall transformation goals, can be enormously inspiring, further adding weight to your determination to "be better". Hard Targets: Over the last week, last night included (pre-bday session) and finishing on the 16th August, I have and will continue to conquer my last remaining, large muscle group compound movement...the Overhead Press. In my training studio, the Overhead Press is the Viking Shoulder Press. One target, over the last year, is to push 'myself' (bodyweight equivalent) above my head 8 times for 1 - 2 sets. In all other fundamental compound movements, I lift at least bodyweight, the overhead press, in any form, has always eluded me. Not anymore! Last night I pushed 67kg, the heaviest weight I've ever pushed above my head! 2 sets x 8 reps and it felt f$#king fantastic! Over the next 4 sessions I will slowly progress to and exceed my 'current' bodyweight of 67.7 kg. I will beat my bodyweight on the 16th August. It's effectively already happened. I'm already smiling as I KNOW I will achieve this micro-target. It's an immensely satisfying feeling "feeling" your victory before it's happened. So how can I be so cocky, so arrogant to think that I've already achieved the lift?! Well I strongly believe "History repeats itself" and the way I structure my programs over near 30 years, is based on the periodisation of ever increasing, gradual, incremental weight progression. That's a mouthful, so basically, I have hard wired my brain and body to pursue, dogmatic progression over and over and over. Success breeds success. Weight training is essentially, a very simple pursuit, however, my Method of Progression (MOP) is VERY carefully calculated and constructed. I've refined and nuanced my MOP over decades to apply to my coaching and outside of my own lifting, it is HUGELY satisfying to see my clients begin this journey of endless achievement and conquer their own self imposed limits. Lift yourself up to "be better" and let the endorphins flow!

21.01.2022 Good n Bad Days Covid-19 has some challenges, but my eyes trump it completely for daily challenge. So off to the pharmacy for those cheapo impromptu reading glasses at +3.00 strength. As a result, writing this is now possible but not sustainable as the world outside of a 30 cm radius is a migraine waiting to happen. ... Tomorrow I won't need them, the inflammation will reduce, maybe, and the day after they'll present some new vision peculiarities. Then a cycle of elective surgery as it's now available again I believe. Never boring though i wish it was. Whatever issue/s you have and we all do, everyday is a challenge to overcome with the occasional day seemingly stress-free... REALLY inhale those days and enjoy the 'normalness' for a few previous hours.

21.01.2022 Happy New Year one and all. Have a safe, relaxed and fun night and celebrate the finality of 2020. Maybe find yourself a cherry and pop it in solidarity (maybe adding to a cocktail might be more fun).

19.01.2022 foodgasm: Finding GREAT tasting, clever alternatives recipes for more treat centric foods such as cakes, brownies, cookies, pizzas etc, can be frustrating at best! Zach's channel is one of the best I've seen and tried for 'doable' recipes where most of the ingredients can be sourced in Australia.... Have a look but be prepared to drool (most all his recipes are low cal, guilt free so drooling is encouraged :P) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBF73y3tK1gYu9p2ag9wJEQ

18.01.2022 Gifts sorted, food sorted, the chores of xmas done, now time for me and to do what I love. Remember, training is a reward NOT a punishment. So give yourself the most important and powerful gift you can, you're own health and wellbeing :) Peace out and Merry xmas

18.01.2022 Tough Love : The times may seem overwhelming, with challenges above and beyond the norm. So what are you going to do about it?! Are you going to shelter from the storm or embrace the unknown and rise with the tide. Enough is enough, take back control, rekindle that confidence, rebuild that resilience and "be the best you can be" and do it now when times are tough not easy. As your coach, I'll navigate you through the mire to enhance your physical, mental and emotional... well-being. We'll start by making you physically stronger, much stronger, muscular and lean... not lean and mean, there's enough 'mean' in the world, but lean and meaningful, powerful. Let me help make your journey matter and make it carry through for the rest of your life. 17.01.2022 STAY CALM! We begin again friday, safe and sound....so get a little excited :)

15.01.2022 Lift for Life - Thighway to Heaven! I love the squat and been doing the lift since the late 1980s....love it. However, at 55 and 30 years of lifting, the traditional back squat has taken its toll, but not on my legs, knees or lower back! Nope, my elbows are now the issue. ... So in the true style of practice what I preach, I've looked toward adaption and what else can I do to replicate ALL the benefits of the squat AND eliminate pain in the elbows AND make squatting even more sustainable. Enter, what I call the Handle Bar Squat (or generally known as Safety Bar Squat). To further adapt the lift, I've used Frank (one of my Power Racks) to create two variations which "lift" the lift to another level of intensity allowing for "Assisted Handle Bar Squats" I love the squat, it's one of the BIG 4 lifts, along with Deadlifts, Bench and Overhead Press, however, in coaching, the Back/Front Squat is problematic as it's a complex lift and isn't as "effective" or even possible, safely, for beginners who want results first and a 'new hobby' second. So I tend to always gravitate to my own adapted lifts such as the Viking (Pillory) Squat and Pole-dancing or Madonna Squat. The Handle Bar Squat, within a Power Rack and with the Assisted Variations, is a game-changer. It'll give excellent results, build great strength and allow you to lift for the long term. Win, win and win! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_h5Jr8yk4YA

15.01.2022 Get SHREDDED eating Icecream! No really! Make good choices and you can smash the calories and help chisel that lean physique! I've taken the hassle out of choosing the icecreams for you and I've found two options that will BLOW YOUR MIND, still give you change and leave you eating icecream guilt free on near any calorie deficit!... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTmnk9SVqXw

14.01.2022 BODYBUILDING FOR THE "GENETICALLY CHALLENGED" For natural, older, genetically "forgotten" real world peeps who happen to love bodybuilding as a hobby/sport/lifestyle, then hypertrophy training is an entirely different animal than for the rest of the genetically ordinary to elite. For the Genetically Un-Gifted, our training and recovery demands an entirely different plan. Eeking out any muscular gains is frustrating at best, most of the time it simply borders on ...miraculous. However, there are lessons that every bodybuilder could take from the Un-Gifted. Enjoy. https://youtu.be/LHgwI1GLt9c

14.01.2022 BYFC clients are in safe hands!

12.01.2022 30 years Coaching! Still gives me a buzz to think how long I've been developing and passing on my coaching experience and still learning to this day! So after a hectic few weeks of assembling 'verified proof' of athletic training practices, outcomes, methodologies etc, it's with great pleasure I 'show off' my successful re-accreditation with the ASCA, ASC and NCAS :)... Your very humbled coach.

11.01.2022 Look to the past for inspiration! In an extremely taxing year for most of us, it can be difficult to plan anything for the future when the global uncertainty is so high. As our ability to access the gym and more fitness activities, at least in Australia, returns to 'normal' it's worth remembering that the ONLY thing we have some control over is our 'reaction to action'. ... So make your actions work to benefit you, to make you feel and "Be Better". We can now move beyond survive and look to thrive and shape ourselves and our future by setting REAL WORLD targets. Creating significant, sustainable change is hard work, it takes commitment and it can be uncomfortable and challenging, not exactly a great selling point - No Strain No Gain. However, it's the truth. What works, every day, year, decade is Weight Training. WT changes us, done properly it changes us outside AND in, body, mind and soul. Couple this with a balance of energy in (food) and energy out (movement & exercise) and you have all you need to succeed. That just saved you $$$$, you're welcome :) For inspiration, look to the past. These two pics are from the 1940s, pre-drug era. Peggy and Steve showing what is possible, albeit, they are both genetically blessed. What's real? Well if you get half way there you're doing brilliantly :) Get to work! 07.01.2022 DEEP & MEAN Clean at Little Jim Pleasingly I decided to get the most difficult areas to clean at out Studio Gym last weekend, so my timing was perfect for the restrictions on gyms being lifted early. It's crucially important new everyone feels they are entering the cleanest and safest environment possible and that's my goal along with continuing my passion to keep our space a place of refuge and growth in a chaotic world, even before Covid-19.... The cleaning continues all week with the gym set to sparkle with the return of BYFC clients and Little Jim members over the coming weeks. HUGE thanks to Tim Watson at Cleanworks!! Please, if anyone needs a deep cleaning service, Tim is your man!! - 0408 747 430!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rwgnTjg9Uw

05.01.2022 Is this a question? Okay, so possibly there are still a few people out there who don't know of the benefits of weight training?! (surely not!). If this is you, then PLEASE read over this article. It outlines the basics although in a VERY generalised fashion. ... Otherwise a more relevant line of questioning is: - Why weight training, why not Aerobic based training? - What can I 'realistically' achieve in 3, 6, 12 months and onwards? - Is your training plan sustainable? - Are all weight training programs equal? We all have VERY different genetics, lifestyles, demands on our time and energy and therefore our recovery. So one plan does NOT suit everyone! Most people weight train too frequently often 4- 7 days a week - (twice a week, done correctly, is perfect for most peeps and will often give better results!!). Peeps mostly train without a plan, believing that going to the gym will just 'magically' transform their physiques. Peeps also train at inconsistent and adhoc intensities going by "how I feel on the day" - that's bullshit, sorry but it's just wrong! Then there's food! Wow, there's a minefield of misunderstanding right there. People fuel their bodies indifferently at best but mostly incorrectly and with little idea of what to eat, how much and how often. Then there is progression. How do we measure progress?! Well for people looking to lose weight, they'll use the scales right. Okay, so your weight went from 100 kg to 97 kg in a week, great...how much of that was Lean Muscle Tissue? - Huh! Why is that important and 3 kg is one week is awesome right?! .... um, nope! What was your starting Lean Muscle Mass, your bodyfat percentage, your daily calorie burn etc? If you don't know, you're already in trouble! TIP: Using the weight scales alone as an overall measure of progress is often deflating, inconsistent and uninformative. They don't give the full picture of how your progressing and progress can often be tedious at best. Scales alone are just too 'dumb' to understand 'real life' progress - Smart Scales are more useful, but again, just one tool you should have in a comprehensive "Progress Tool Box". https://www.abc.net.au//will-weight-training-keep/11240128

05.01.2022 Weight Loss Forever!? Losing excess weight is hard enough, however, KEEPING it off is the true test. For sustainable weight management, what are the most important factors?! Layne goes over several a report released recently which outlines those factors. Ignore Layne's efforts to plug his own book (which I have incidentally), the details of the meta study will sound VERY familiar to most of you!... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUxVCtScf8U&t=1s

04.01.2022 Merry Xmas from BYFC! Have a brilliant day with friends and family and enjoy the break from the storm that has been 2020. In the video I give updates on our opening hours for the xmas period.... Cheers, Brett. https://youtu.be/82B2yRLSleY

03.01.2022 The Fountain of Youth Lifting stuff up and putting it down again has enormous benefits for mature age people regardless of their background, ability, current fitness or cultural background. The key is resistance training with expert guidance and support. Regardless of whether the activity is Powerlifting, Strongman, strength based Bodybuilding or recreational weight training.... It's never too late but better earlier than later! http://business.essa.org.au//07/CC_OlderAdults2_July2020.m

03.01.2022 Lean Muscle for Life The fab Craig Harper has recently released a podcast episode on "Building Muscle" - link below. The major takeaway, which I 'harp on' repeatedly, is that gaining muscle effectively means creating a New Normal. ... The New Normal: Unless you're genetically gifted and build muscle with little effort and perhaps a near zero plan in place, then reshaping our bodies, sculpting a stronger, leaner, more muscular, healthier, fitter and happier you, requires a LONG TERM approach. 154799

03.01.2022 24/7 up and going! Thanks so much to Ian and Peter today for kicking off with their uncoached routines during times that work for them giving a tonne more training frequency flexibility! All clients now have full access to Little Jim for uncoached sessions as they wish. ... I'll look to introduce VERY limited Gym Membership in such a way that suits both members and clients without compromising my Covid plan or the safety of ANY gym users! https://youtu.be/ojxWV-W1LN4
