18.01.2022 Winner of the BEST EXPERIMENTAL FILM: DIVIDED WE SCROLL Directed by KLAAS DIERSMANN... Congratulations to the team and the hard work that went into this unique and incredible film! Technology is rewiring our brains and changing both our physical movements and inner thought processing. 'Divided We Scroll' is an experimental and eerie depiction of our intimate relationships with these technologies, which have become obsessive, compulsive and divisive. Commissioned as part of theBarbican’sLife Rewiredseries of shorts tasked with the exploration of what it means to be human in the face of rapidly evolving technology, London-based filmmakerKlaas Diersmann’sDivided We Scrollprovides an eerie depiction of the obsessive, compulsive and divisive relationships we form with and through our ever pervasive screens. A film which could perfectly round off a tech-caution triple bill next to Cynical Smile’s digital age discomfort shortFractureand Will & Carly’s indictment of projected perfectionFilterface, Diersmann too employed contemporary dance as a means through which to express the effects of this accelerating, yet abstract danger: I was inspired to work with a contemporary choreographer to artistically and physically demonstrate how our world, our communities, our bodies and our minds are in constant wireless connection to technological networks. Pepa Ubera, a London based choreographer was also researching this topic and we began to discuss how to bring the film to life. I was fascinated to discover that many of our physical movements how we interact with technological devices have been patented by tech giants, and these movements inspired the interpretative choreography for the film.

05.01.2022 Winner of the BEST MUSIC DOCUMENTARY: THE RISE OF THE SYNTHS Directed by Ivan Castell ... A huge congratulations to the team behind ‘The Rise of the Synths’, which one The Best Music Documentary at the #bryonbayfilmfestival "The Rise Of The Synths" is the story of how in the mid 2000s, a group of composers from around the world and with the help of Myspace, spontaneously created an underground music scene known as "Synthwave": electronic modern composition heavily inspired by the soundtracks of cinema, TV and video games from 1980’s pop culture. Narrated by John Carpenter, the film explores: "Why now, this nostalgia for the 80s that not only affects music but cinema and aesthetics in general? Where does it come from? And what will become of it? Let’s discover what Synthwave really is before it bursts into the mainstream or dies without glory! Ivan Castell I have always been attracted by cultural movements which develop in parallel to trends; four years ago I discovered a treasure trove of Synthwave composers on the Internet. Artists from all around the world working secretly from home, uploading their electronic works every week to the net. And they had fans. Beginning with MySpace, they were small communities, with little impact. But now everything has changed. Synthwave music, together with a broader aesthetic trend towards the 80s, is now present in many cultural forms. And it all started with the music. #Synthwave #bryonbay #byronbayfilmfestival #film
