25.01.2022 Raining last Sunday but it was Spring rain, so we didn’t get wet. The bay’s clarity of water left something to be desired but as we have been declared a dirty State, I guess we can’t complain about the water. The Temperature in was 19.1 deg and the air was 18.5 according to ‘he who sees all’. Dennis won the Longs from Dave who is making the soup next Sunday after he cleans the pot.. Boydy won the Shorts ‘cos he is tallest. The Soupmaker came second ‘cos he ain’t; but he did... win the Sealed Handicap. The Winemaker won the Raffle. The lads relaxed after last week’s donation efforts and Benny got a 9.56 for his Asian Pumpkin soup. Chipper suggested a few of the lads come visit him soon and to wear something woolly to remind him of the temperature in Collingwood. The shorter swim season is winding down but the raffles are continuing over Friday and Sunday night’s dinner-times. We all went straight home. ROADTHRILL See more

25.01.2022 Last Sunday we had a social swim under the watchful eyes of the Lifeguards. It was a Monthly BBQ morning so we had the meeting whilst the new Masterchefs were trained up by the Legends themselves, Migaloo and Apron Jeff. The meeting went longer than a FIFA one but an important issue had to be resolved. This was that, despite the Covid WWIII causing us to cancel the Byron Bay Property Sales Ocean Swim Classic along with the Byron Bay Mini-swim, we WILL be having a Donation D...ay on August 23rd. This will be reduced in Charity numbers as we have a little in the bank account from our raffles and Sunday Club proceeds but not anywhere as much as we would normally. The support of the Park Hotel and the Sun Bistro of our raffles are the reasons we can have donations made at all this year. Thanks fellas. A visitor was in attendance in the form of Peter from the inner western suburb of the village. He missed out on winning the Raffle but Fred didn’t. Reg won the Sealed Handicap and the BBQ rated a 10 with GST added. Next week we are back to the Soup format so Peter will finally get to try some of Tiger’s concoction. The end of season trip is being formulated as we speak with the short range travel and intra-state conditions limiting the choices of destinations and this could be reduced even further when the restrictions get harsher. We may not even be allowed to cross the Belongil by the time to travel comes around. We all went to HQ to watch a sporting event and then went straight home. ROADTHRILL See more

19.01.2022 As our season comes to a close, members are reminded that we still operate raffles each weekend both at the Park Hotel and the Sun Bistro and all of us are required to jump in and give a hand. Both venues have great meals available as well so take your better half out on a date-night once in a while and raise the money for our charities etc. Season closing ? Yep, on Sunday11 October with a BBQ. Club Presentations are not being handed out for swim and behavior awards due to... 19 mucking us about. Last Sunday the water finally cleared up during the last few tides before we met but the rocks and the debris was still there. We will be a clean place after Thursday. Our Long Swim was won by Keno Dino and the Short one went to Paul B-Z as we swam in the 20.4 degree water. The last of the cooler months saw an 18 degree air with the 9 knot SW breeze. We had a 9.6 rated snack ably presented by Migaloo and The Sommelier after which the Raffle went to the Pot of Gold Sitter and Whale Brady won the Sealed Handicap. Hutcho ran a proper meeting after which there were bike repairs at HQ. ROADTHRILL See more

17.01.2022 Happy Birthday Clive Condie !! Long time swimmer and supporter. From The Whales

14.01.2022 Last Sunday was different. For one, Hutcho didn't front - hope the ankle heals quickly; For two, there were no swims in perfect conditions (beach closed due to a Code 16) ; For three, Boydy won a raffle; for four, Chilly turned up in NSW (and won the Sealed Handicap); For five, the Masterchefs did not eat the Soup ( long nights watching Finals) and for six the said Vegemite Soup got the maker a score above his usual 4.9 points. ... Winemaker presided over the second last meeting for the season 'cos Peter Trump thought the season had ended and Liquid turned up an hour late 'cos he didn't know how to adjust his watch to Australian Time. There were several motions put and agreed upon then we went to HQ to collect our winnings. After that we went straight home. See you next week-end for the last Sunday for 2020. ROADTHRILL See more

12.01.2022 Beautiful day at the beach on Sunday with cold winds the only setback. We had a social swim under the leadership of fill in captain Denso. The full-time Captain, tiger was ‘cooking’ the soup which was interesting tho’ the carrot pieces tasted funny . Anyow’ he got 9.6 for it and B-Z is doing this Sunday’s Chicken-Neck soup. B-Z also won the Raffle and Seal took out the Seal’d Handicap. Donald Benny wasn’t here and the meeting went along well with the biggest item decided ...was that the Donations Day has been put back a week as we found out the Surf Club AGM is on the same day that we had planned initially. So our day is now on 30th August at 1030 hrs. Good luck to Tim the Doorman with his better insight to things happening this week. See you soon. We went to HQ and then went straight home ROADTHRILL

12.01.2022 Final Day of the Season and a new lot taking over. Sunday 11OCT20 was the last day of our 2019.99 season - 2020 wasn't really part of the Whales Happy days. No Byron Bay Property Sales Ocean Swim Classic or Byron Bay Mitre 10 Mini-swim. No real Club Swims around the cans - even one day where it was too rough, another one was too much debris and another one the beach was closed due to Shark sighting. Even the President pulled the pin a fortnight early. ... Our Sponsors, Supporters, Helpers and Charities didn't get much of a go in 2020 So next year we are scheduled to kick off first Sunday in April - if allowed. Mind you our last Sunday was beautiful with warm sunny weather, clear and calm water, all of Macca's kids were around the place, free on-beach seating from the Greens and we had a NEW Chef team doing the E.O.S BBQ and a good one at that. We had a meeting and the Sec/Treas. even was nice - must have been the Spring weather. Hutcho won the Raffle and Paul Mc. got the Sealed Handicap. The BBQ got 10.5 points, we all got some sun on us then we went to HQ and straight home from there. See you all next Season ROADTHRILL

11.01.2022 Today (Sunday 30AUG20) the Whales gave away $12,500 to six charities. The amount and recipients were down due to the Covid WW 3 affects but we did get money raised from this year's raffles and were able to give it away to these folk.

11.01.2022 To Swim or not to Swim..... For the first time in a long while, there was no swims at all on Sunday as the Lifeguards closed the beach due to heavy surf, wind, exposed rocks, flotsam and jetsam being prevalent in the rips sweeping along the beach. The other factor was that it was raining and we didn’t want to get wet. We were able to relax and stay dry all morning so we consumed Migaloo’s Soup of Special Type Tomato and for this he received 9.6 points. ... We also had a meeting with several issues discussed at length. These being that the Club Beanies are proceeding in the creation process and a cost of $25 if approved; the Merchandise and Swim Equipment Conex is going to have repairs to the inevitable weather damage and is also being approved for a relocation a bit further from the coastal village and the impact of the WW III disease on our annual charity swim and our ability to provide local charities with donations was raised and we are checking out the results of the Raffles we run during every week with a thought to be able to provide some monies to some of our recipients if we have sufficient funds. More on this later in the season. The Sunday morning Club raffle was won by Tiger Tetley and the mystery Sealed Handicap was taken out by Hutcho. As we normally have the Top End Shield Carnival next week-end each year, we have sent an invitation to the Ballina "Tight Antics" to come rock-hopping at Main Beach next Sunday. The rain stopped in time for us to venture to HQ and then straight home tho some did have to go to The Office to work. ROADTHRILL

07.01.2022 A trip to Wooli in the early (and liberated) days. BBWW's know the identity.

04.01.2022 Happy Burp Day, Keno. From your Whale mates ( and Jeffro).

02.01.2022 Last Sunday some 15 members of the Winter Ocean Swimmers enjoyed the weather, the ocean and a 9.6 points-rated Garden Soup from Paul B-Z plus a birthday cake for our youngest member Keno Dhnaram. The weather was Spring-like, the ocean was the venue for a social swim, the Curried Pumpkin was warming and the cake was brilliantly baked. We did actually have a meeting where we discussed our storage shipping container and the end-of-season trip. The shipping container was discu...ssed more than the swim shirt colors with just as many suggestions. The EOS trip received the same attention. Donation Day was re-announced for those that don’t have emails, FB or read the ‘Northern Rivers Times’ newspaper or their text messages. The Raffle was won by Sec/Treas Phil and surprise, surprise Keno won the sealed Handicap !! Our annual Donations Day was firmly slotted in for 30th August at 1030 on the Surf Club deck and next week’s soup maker is Fred. We then went to HQ to farewell Megan, get our bikes fixed and then went straight home . ROADTHRILL

02.01.2022 The Byron Bay Winter Whales , est. 1983, are renown for making money from an annual charity ocean swim event. Since their inaugural swim in 1988 from Watego’s Beach to Main Beach in Byron Bay, the Whales have given away $968,000 dollars to local charities and selected organizations. Due to the pandemic this year, the ‘first Sunday in May’ Byron Bay Property Sales Ocean Swim classic over 2.2 klm and the Byron bay Mitre 10 Mini-swim over 800m could not be run and so there was... no large amount available to be donated. A usual amount raised would have broken the one million dollars mile-stone of donations. However, due to the members conducting raffles each week at the Sun Bistro and the Park Hotel, the small group of ocean swimmers do have a smaller amount to distribute this coming Sunday 30AUG20. As the amount is down this year, so too are the charity recipients in all practically and at 1030 on the Byron Bay Surf Club deck on Sunday, the Byron Bay SLSC, Byron Bay Swimming Club, the Rainbow Disabled Swimming, Westpac Rescue Helicopter, Byron Bay Scouts and the Byron Bay/Lennox Head Junior Rugby League will be receiving some money from the efforts of the Whales. It is sad that they do not have enough to help out all the regular groups but the Swims do get a lot of entrants each year from QLD and VIC. T hey did the best they could in restriction times. Meanwhile the Sunday swim was a chilly affair and the numbers were down in those getting wet. The Club Captain, Tiger the Doorman swan AND brought a delightful Gingernut cake to celebrate He won the Long swim in a dead-heat (he is the Captain after all) and Happy Phil won the short swim by a big margin. The shortened season means we may or may not be tripping away for the end of season journey and it looks like the 18th of September is the date - but then it is only Monday of the week so anything could happen at any committee meeting held before the Donation Day's earlier than normal meeting. The Raffle went to Syl and the Sealed Handicap to Benny Trump. Benny declared he could beat Fred's Chicken and Dingo soup's score of 9.65 points in a couple of week's time. We then all went straight home. roadthrill.
