24.01.2022 Buzz off! For those in the Northern Rivers, you are probably experiencing a mozzie outbreak due to the ridiculous amounts of rain over the past month. If you don’t want to use synthetic repellents, here are some tried and tested plant-based alternatives. * Lemon scented eucalyptus... * Peppermint * Blue Mallee Eucalyptus * Clove * Thyme * Geranium * Cedar * Patchouli * Citronella Essential oils are volatile and evaporate easily. This being the case, you need to apply them frequently or add a compound that helps them adhere to the skin for longer: for example, vegetable glycerine or a cold pressed vegetable oil. Then top up a spray bottle with distilled witch-hazel, distilled water or vinegar, shake well and apply frequently. As an alternative, you could add these essential oils to a plant based cream and apply directly to the skin. As different oils have been shown to work on different types of mosquitoes, it is best to use a blend of essential oils. Some essential oils can cause skin irritation, particularly in the presence of sunlight. For those with sensitive skin, be sure to do a spot test first. There are also issues associated with safety and dose. Here is the research article so you can choose the best blend for you 1. Maia, M., & Moore, S. 23.01.2022 With changes in the weather, now is a good time to start some immune support. Echinacea is a fabulous herb to help boost the immune system and to help you fight off lurgies such as colds, flus and other infections. Echinacea works best at preventing infection when taken continuously over a period of time, instead of only being taken when you have an active infection. What to look for when choosing an Echinacea. There are many different species of Echinacea purpurea, pallida... and angustifolia and many different preparations leaves, whole plant or root. The roots of Echinacea angustifolia (or an angustifolia and purpurea blend) contain the highest amount of active constituents and therefore are the most therapeutically active. The main active constituents of echinacea are the alklamides. This is what makes your tongue tingle and is an effective indicator of good quality Echinacea. As part of a consultation, I can help you design an immune boosting protocol using diet and lifestyle changes, nutritional supplementation or by formulating an individualised herbal medicine blend. 19.01.2022 Prevention of Food Allergy in Children It was previously thought that delaying the introduction of allergenic foods was the best way to prevent food allergy in children. There are a number of factors that can decrease the likelihood of development of childhood allergies; one of these being when potential dietary allergens are introduced into the diet. In one study, infants introduced to cooked egg between 4-6 months were 5 times less likely to develop food allergy than if int...roduced after 10 months of age (Koplin, 2010). Delayed timing of the introduction of cow’s milk and wheat has also been associated with an increased risk of those food allergies (Allen, 2016). Care needs to be taken at the time of introduction of allergenic foods in high-risk infants. Ayesha practices from North Coast Medical Centre in Byron Bay. As part of a consultation she can provide advice on how and when to introduce foods, along with preventive measures for allergic conditions such as eczema and asthma. https://www.byronnaturopath.com.au/integrative-medicine References: * Allen KJ, Koplin JJ. 09.01.2022 So let’s talk chocolate! Theobroma cacao, the food of the gods, has demonstrated protective effects against a number of conditions including cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline and diabetes. This is mainly due to the polyphenols which are antioxidant and protect against oxidative stress. Two of the most important things to consider when choosing a good chocolate are the cocoa solids and the sugar content. The cocoa solids contain the active phytochemicals so aim for a... chocolate that contains 70-90% of these. Don’t forget to flip the packet over to look at the nutritional information table and check the grams of sugar per 100 grams. This equates to the percentage of sugar i.e. if there are 45 grams of sugar per 100g, the chocolate contains 45% sugar. One teaspoon of sugar equals about 4 grams so this would be approximately 11 teaspoons of sugar per 100g. The higher the percentage of cocoa solids, the lower the percentage of sugar. If you follow these two recommendations, chocolate eaten in moderation can be a delicious part of a healthy diet. Wishing you a relaxing and restorative break. 03.01.2022 Treat asthma, treat the gut The benefit of prebiotics for digestive health and immune health are well known. Now prebiotics are being investigated for inflammatory conditions such as asthma. This small study demonstrated that a single dose of inulin a fructooligosaccharide (FOS) significantly reduced airway inflammation in children with stable asthma. It was also associated with an improvement in lung function. With the guidance of a qualified naturopath, prebiotics are a s...imple and cost-effective approach that you can combine with your current asthma management. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov//P/pdf/nutrients-09-00057.pdf North Coast Medical Centre offers combined consultations where you can see a GP and a naturopath at the same time.
