25.01.2022 Cars out - people in! You may have noticed the action in Bay Lane this week. We're installing an automated bollard system!... The lane will be car-free every night from 5pm to 5am starting Saturday 5 December. The aim of the Bay Lane project is to make the small street, which is lined with restaurants, a much safer area for people to enjoy in the evenings. The bollards will remain hidden during the day, allowing vehicles to use Bay Lane, but they will be automated to rise out of the road from 5pm every evening. Business and property owners have been notified. Council has also been liaising with them for a number of years about this project which is designed to make the short, but busy laneway safer for all users. Once the bollards are in place and have been tested the only traffic allowed into Bay Lane at night will be foot traffic. For more information contact Claire McGarry, Place Manager Byron Bay, on 6626 7296.

23.01.2022 Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST Severe Thunderstorm Warning for HEAVY RAINFALL... For people in Hunter and parts of Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast, Central Tablelands, North West Slopes and Plains and Northern Tablelands Forecast Districts. Issued at 4:13 pm Thursday, 17 December 2020. Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Newcastle, Scone, Cessnock, Maitland, Tenterfield and Kyogle. 117mm recorded in the 2 hours to 11:45am at Bilambil Heights. 84mm recorded in the 2 hours to 11:15am at Boat Harbour. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Keep clear of creeks and storm drains. * Don't walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water. * If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue. * Be aware that run-off from rainfall in fire affected areas may behave differently and be more rapid. It may also contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. * After bushfires, heavy rain and the loss of foliage can make the ground soft and heavy, leading to a greater chance of landslides. * Unplug computers and appliances. * Avoid using the phone during the storm. * Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well. * Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires. * For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500. The next warning is due to be issued by 7:15 pm.

07.01.2022 Waste Wise holiday recycling Do your celebrations result in full recycling bins? You can reduce some of your recycling by... buying bulk avoiding disposable plates and bowls, instead hire or borrow. saving wrapping paper, cards and boxes for reuse avoiding Christmas crackers and other single use decorations (most are not recyclable anyway) If you still have extra recycling: drop your bottles and cans at the Return and Earn Stations in Byron Bay and Mullumbimby. drop it at the Byron Resource Recovery Centre. This includes bottles, cans, glass jars and some hard plastic containers. Polystyrene and cardboard can also, be dropped off to a separate bin at the Resource Recovery Centre. Remember there is a $5 minimum charge for recycling. This covers some of the transport and processing costs. If you are unsure about what you can drop off, check the website or call the Resource Recovery Hotline on 1300 652 625. To further help with this, we start WEEKLY recycling collections on Monday 21st of December to Friday 1st January. This means all 3 bins out for collection. 03.01.2022 COVID 19 update December 2, 2020 Wayne Jones, Chief Executive, Northern NSW Local Health District There have been no new confirmed cases of locally acquired COVID-19 reported in Northern NSW Local Health District residents since 25 July, 130 days ago.... One new overseas-acquired case of COVID-19 has been confirmed in a NNSWLHD resident, bringing the total to 62. This latest case is a Ballina Shire resident who acquired their infection overseas and has recently returned to Australia. This person is currently in hotel quarantine in Sydney, and will be released from isolation once health staff confirm that it is safe to do so. Across the District, more than 83,000 tests have now been done. Testing rates have dropped over the past month, and we continue to urge anyone with even mild symptoms to come forward for testing. Get tested on the day you get symptoms don’t wait to see if they go away. Assume it’s COVID-19 until proven otherwise by a test, and remember there is no limit on how many tests you can have. Testing is quick, free, and easy, and most people receive their test result within 24 hours. Our hospital based testing clinics are open seven days a week. To help stop the spread of COVID-19: - If you are unwell, get tested and isolate right away don’t delay. Remain isolated until you receive your test result. - Wash your hands regularly. Take hand sanitiser with you when you go out. Keep your distance. Leave 1.5 metres between yourself and others. - Wear a mask when using public transport, rideshares and taxis, and in shops, places of worship and other places where you can’t physically distance. When taking taxis or rideshares, commuters should sit in the back. To find your nearest testing clinic visit https://www.nsw.gov.au//how-to-protect-yourself-an/clinics or contact your GP.
