03.01.2022 Lineage. I had a conversation the other day about if it is important or not. For me it is, I have journeyed from White Belt through to first degree Black Belt under the same association. This for me is the important part, my coaches have always known exactly what my skill level/knowledge was, what I needed to work on etc. This also made my progress easier as I travelled and hosted my coaches regularly. With the popularity of BJJ at an all time high, It's becoming more and ...more common to see people getting EVERY belt off a DIFFERENT coach/association, this usually coincides with these same people NEVER travelling to their coach's Academy and only ever hosting them twice a year for gradings (even though they never see their level of knowledge etc). Jumping associations for rank is all too common, and unless you ask your coach their lineage they will NEVER tell you this. How can you deserve the rank if the head coach has never seen you roll, never rolled with you, never seen you roll with their other students?? So for me, Yes, lineage is important. P.S. Top pic has my first coach Stuart Nairne, my current coach Vincent Perry and our head coach and founder of our association (Will/Machado) and Oz first Black Belt John Will, along with my other mentors Dacian, James and Joe Bottom pic is of a bunch (no where near all) of the Will/Machado Black Belts from a couple of years ago, with John Will and HIS coach Rigan Machado........very cool
