24.01.2022 Called in to Theo's Nursery at 187 Old Gympie Road Kallangur this afternoon to see what was in stock. It is always a good place to get story ideas. Take a virt...ual look at things that caught my eye, it will save you spending as much as I did! (no, I did not buy all of these). Seriously though, good prices here and staff have great horticultural knowledge. If you are looking for something just that bit different, call in next time you are passing. www.theosnursery.com They had seed potatoes and asparagus crowns in stock if you are after them. See more

24.01.2022 If you've grown citrus trees at home, youre likely to have come across swollen galls on your grapefruit, lemon, lime or orange. They are caused by citrus gall ...wasps (Bruchophagus fellis). While the galls generally wont kill trees, they can seriously impact their vigour, reducing the size and yield of fruit, and causing growth to be weak and spindly. Jane shows us how to say goodbye to gall wasps! See more

24.01.2022 Testing the soil in your garden can be as a simple as grabbing a shovel and some buckets! Tino shows us how to improve your soil no matter the results!

23.01.2022 Do your tomatoes look like this? Plenty of gardeners are having issues with blossom end rot. This problem occurs where tomatoes are grown in soil that is low i...n calcium (you did not add gypsum at planting) and/or watering is intermittment (your tomatoes wilt before you re-water). Large fruited tomatoes are most commonly affected. Cherry types are much hardier. This problem can also occur on related solaceous crops like eggplants, capsicum and tamarillo fruit. If plants are young, add gypsum and water more regularly to save fruit yet to form. If plants are mature, pull them out and replant cherry tomatoes. See more

23.01.2022 They are back. i was tidying some citrus today, when I noticed the unmistakable smell of bronze orange bugs. They are at egg and green nymph stage, so a simple ...oil spray will control them through smothering. Apply to all citrus and repeat spray in around six weeks to get the next generation. See more

18.01.2022 Having trouble with possums? I suggest 6 drops of oil of cloves per litre of water sprayed each week on or around plants, but if that does not work you could tr...y these creative cages I saw recently at a nursery! Join me on ABC radio at 6am in the morning. It is going to be cool, so if you have an old fashioned, bed-side clock radio, that might be the best option or listen on your phone. If you are lucky (like me), your other half might make you tea and toast! Get in early on 1300 222 612. See more

15.01.2022 Some gardeners find applying liquid fertilizer a bit of a chore. I recycle plastic bottles that deliver just the right dose for the watering can I am using and ...keep them together (usually near an outdoor tap). The green watering can holds 9-10 litres to which 10ml of the liquid brand I am using needs to be added - two pumps. The tiny gold watering can I use for verandah and indoor plants requires just one spray from the trigger pack. If I change products, I note the dilution rate and adjust accordingly. It is clean and easy and best of all, if it is sitting there with the watering can I tend to use it! You can do the same for seaweed too. It also makes you conscious of the dilution rate of different products - cheaper is not necessarily more economical. See more

15.01.2022 Hi Jerry, My pawpaw leaves are looking sick, my plant has lost condition, will it recover?, Thanks, Nat at Beerburrum. Reply: Sadly, this is a virus - pawpaw ...crinkle top virus is fatal. To stop it spreading, compost the plant before sap sucking pests spread it to other pawpaws. The virus first found its way into Australia around Woodford, SEQ, and keeps spreading. You can safely compost the waste and replant. On the upside, it looks like green pawpaw salad is on the menu! Jerry

15.01.2022 Im stoked to be a Chief Counter for BirdLife Australia and you can be a counter too. The Aussie Backyard Bird Count 2020 is just around the corner. Its the best... way any of us can get involved with some citizen science and help add valuable data nationwide about our amazing birds and their distribution. The whole family can be involved and all it takes is 20 mins sometime between the 19th -25th October. You can join me by registering here ; https://aussiebirdcount.org.au/?Costa You can do your count in your backyard, at the local park, at nan and pops place, wherever you like. If you dont have the app you can always fill out the forms on the website but the main ingredient you need is 20 minutes to sit or stand and observe what birds are around that location. There is a live launch of the event of Monday 19th and Ill let you now about that on the day. Heres links to the Birdlife Australia Website and Aussie Backyard BirdCount Website, also the Facebook Instagram and Twitter pages for all the info you need to know and lots of great facts. Ill be doing a few counts over the week and will go live on one of them and we can talk about our bird counting experiences. Let the family know, the grand kids, nieces, nephews, neighbours and have some fun supporting our birdlife and recording our biodiversity. After the year that has been this data is even more valuable to see just how our birdlife has faired given the bushfires and ongoing drought. 10.01.2022 Hi all, I have received a request from member.....If anyone on here can help or knows of someone who can please comment below or send a message through :) Hi, I hope you can help me find this special plant: Im looking to grow the tropical plant Ming Aralia (Polyscias fruticosa) in my garden. It's highly ornamental as well as useful in the kitchen, with a gorgeous spicy aroma that we use to infuse coconut oil. ... I spotted it growing in private gardens last time I was in Brisbane, but my online searches to buy it have all come up empty. Would you be able to help me find a seller, or perhaps one of your members grows it and is willing to strike cuttings for me? I look forward to hearing from you. Cheers, Tomás

09.01.2022 My bad took this off another group just so funny

08.01.2022 Time to sow rosella seed. I love how the cotyledons (seed leaves) make new plants look so weird - nothing like you think rosella plants would. Seedlings may not... be in nurseries yet. There are two forms of rosella - early flowering and late flowering. Punnets sold are usually late flowering and have a taller growth habit. Hopefully like me you saved a few seeds from previous crops. To speed germination put your seeds in a cup and pour hot water over them straight from the kettle. Leave overnight and sow the follow day - into pots or straight into a prepared bed. Full sun and perfect drainage is required for good crops. Six plants is a good number for jam/cordial. Did you know there is a white form of rosella? But really, who wants insipid looking jam! See more

03.01.2022 Melaleuca pearsonii: One of my favourite Queensland wildflowers. A low growing shrub with sparkling flowers, I started growing this magnet for bees when I manag...ed Sydney Botanic Gardens. I had a group planted as a groundcover in the Rare and Threatened Plants Garden there. My plant was propagated by the Friends of Sydney Botanic Gardens. Each year, after it has finished flowering, I tip prune it to keep it bushy. Melaleuca pearsonii (syn. Callistemon pearsonii), see: https://bie.ala.org.au//id.biodiversity./node/apni/2910604

01.01.2022 With a wingspan of up to 11 inches, the Queen Alexandra's Birdwing is the biggest butterfly in the world and it's also one of the rarest. Found only in the fo...rests of Papua New Guinea, this unique insect's population has been steadily decreasing in recent years. In 1992, experts counted 150 of these butterflies in a 10-day period, and by 2008, a conservation biologist who spent three months searching for them found only 21. From habitat loss to its hefty price tag on the black market, Queen Alexandra's Birdwing is believed to be in danger of extinction: https://bit.ly/3isCAQz

01.01.2022 Costa's 5 STEPS! How to brew up your weeds into a cheap, home-grown fertiliser that returns nutrients to the soil. All you need is a 20L bucket and lid, a ...garden sieve and a bottle. Collect a good few handfuls of weeds, kikuyu, and other running weeds such as sorrel. Avoid weeds that have mature seed, as they may survive the process and spread further. If you must use them, remove the seed heads rst. Place the weeds in a 20L bucket, then add enough water to thoroughly submerge them. Put the lid on the bucket (to contain the smell) and leave the mixture to ferment for four to six weeks. Check the contents of the bucket from time to time. When the weeds have become a slimy sludge, sieve the weed tea, and throw the remaining mixture in the compost so it continues to break down. Pour the weed tea into a bottle. To use it to fertilise your plants, dilute with fresh water at a ratio of 1:10. You can store it for up to three weeks. Check out Costa Georgiadis Official page for more awesome gardening tips!
