24.01.2022 WOW! We made a 230 year old discovery on Spike Island Cork! We were reopening old areas of the fort for future public use, one of them being this exciting tun...nel which goes under the forts walls. Its called a 'sallyport' and it takes you from the inner fort to the outside moat which surrounds the fortress. When we removed the wall that had been blocking it up for decades we did not expect to find a door leading to a 230 year old spiral staircase! It is cut from stone and seems to floats like something out of Harry potter. Being on the east side of the fort it is highly likely this was part of the first fort built on the island in 1790, explaining it being the only one. The work to build the much larger present fort which was started in 1804 swallowed up that first fort and made the sallyport and staircase redundant, so it was blocked up and hidden to this day! Despite some of our staff being here since the 1980's noone including our heritage team knew of the staircase. We also found some large bones which were fortunately animal and some very old half full bottles of wine. We cannot wait to show it to our visitors in time and we thank anyoe who has been to us for your support, which allows us to keep discovering areas like this. Its our story, your history, at Spike Island Cork.

19.01.2022 The small but strategically situated township of Rocky Water Holes (now Rocklea) was the first coach stop along the way for those travelling from Brisbane to Ip...swich. When the original bullock track was sufficiently improved to carry traffic, Wood’s Coach Service was the first, then Nolan’s, then in 1865 the Cobb & Co Coach Service took over the run. From early on there were two hotels, Kelly’s and the Crown, a blacksmith (Kinghorn family, father & son), a General store, and a saddlery operated by G Edmunds. The original Crown Hotel was in the middle of a large tract of land owned by Messrs A Flegler and F Funkner and it is said to be the first hotel established along the route from Brisbane to Ipswich, a suggested date is c1859. The original Crown Hotel was destroyed by fire. On the 9th July, 1884, the township was officially changed from Rocky Water Holes to Rocklea. See more

09.01.2022 The Queen of South Brisbane Cemetery Maria Elizabeth Trundle was born in Brisbane in 1868, the daughter of Henry and Mary Ann Biggs. She married Francis Edgar... Trundle in 1900. Maria trained to be a nurse at the Brisbane General Hospital. She became a nursing specialist in the treatment of fever. She later opened the Victoria Private Hospital, which was situated on Stanley Street, South Brisbane, near the Victoria Bridge. It consisted of three storeys, and contained 21 rooms, capable of accommodating 14 patients, each in separate rooms, with every desirable comfort, although a larger number could be accommodated if it was found necessary. The rooms are large and lofty, well lighted and aired, particular attention having been given to the matter of ventilation. They have been furnished and equipped with the idea of securing the greatest possible amount of comfort to patients. For instance, each room has its own medicine chest, and a large press for the accommodation of the patients' wearing apparel, while hot and cold water is everywhere laid on. The rooms all open out on to corridor, which arrangement has many obvious advantages. The establishment contains the most modern conveniences in the way of bathrooms, lavatories, sanitary arrangements, etc., arranged so as to be handy to each room. The whole of the building is lighted with incandescent gas burners, and the lighting of the operating-room is particularly noteworthy. Indeed, the equipment of this important room has been made a special feature, the fittings being all up to date, while the array of surgical instruments is of a most high-class and comprehensive character. The up-to date nature of the arrangements is well displayed in the method to be employed in sterlising disease germs in linen, bandages, and in many other ways. On the first and second floors the front rooms open on to wide balconies, from which point of vantage a fine view of the river and surrounding scenery is obtainable. In fact, the position of the building allows of a pleasing view from almost any of the windows, while an abundance of healthy fresh air is assured. On the ground floor the culinary arrangements are most complete, and excellent accommodation has also been assured for the nursing staff. After her death the Hospital was run by her husband Francis. Matron Trundle was also the superintendent of the Army Nursing Corps and was accorded a military funeral on the 17th August 1908 by the Army Medical Service Corp, Under Colonel Thomson, P.M.O., and Major Sutton. Her coffin was borne on a gun carriage and covered with the Union Jack. There were so many floral tributes they had to be conveyed in a special vehicle. Maria was laid to rest in the Biggs family grave and is mentioned on the main headstone as Maria Elizabeth Trundle (Queen). There is a second headstone on the grave plot that simply says Queen.
