20.01.2022 Hi All, Ann Kulpinski here ..Hoping all our members are well and staying sane through these unusually troubling times. Please feel free to reach out if you are in need of anything at all. I will be adding lots of articles and DIY gardening projects to keep you all busy.

20.01.2022 Question dominating this week is Downy Mildew. This fungal disease affects a wide range of vegetables (particularly cucurbits) and fruit (grapes) at this time o...f year. It is made worse by cool, damp conditions overnight, nutrient imbalance (excess nitrogen), lack of sunshine and air circulation and varietal susceptibility. Zucchini, pumpkins and cucumbers hate cooler conditions so they are particularly susceptible. Grapes are dropping their leaves anyway, so control is a bit pointless. Make a bicarbonate of soda spray (see my website) or use Eco-Carb/Eco-Fungicide (which is based on bicarb). Remember however, if you do not change the underlying causes of the condition (not always possible), control will be limited. Please note this is not powdery mildew which is much easier to control. 18.01.2022 If they are not being eaten, they have spots! These two issues have dominated my Q&A this week. As nights get cooler and plant foliage stays wet overnight you c...an expect an increase in leaf diseases. Spores of Cercospora leaf spot (pictured), powdery mildew and grey mould are naturally in the air, on plants and in the soil, just waiting for the right combination of temperature and weather conditions to take off. Control can be difficult, but here are some tips: - ensure plants have full sun and great air circulation - apply seaweed - avoid watering late in the day - avoid excess nitrogen (overly rich manure, fertilizers) - balance nitrogen with extra liquid silica and potash and trace elements - use home made bicarbonate of soda, milk sprays (see my website for details) or commercial sprays based on natural ingredients like Eco-fungicide See more

08.01.2022 Some gardeners find applying liquid fertilizer a bit of a chore. I recycle plastic bottles that deliver just the right dose for the watering can I am using and ...keep them together (usually near an outdoor tap). The green watering can holds 9-10 litres to which 10ml of the liquid brand I am using needs to be added - two pumps. The tiny gold watering can I use for verandah and indoor plants requires just one spray from the trigger pack. If I change products, I note the dilution rate and adjust accordingly. It is clean and easy and best of all, if it is sitting there with the watering can I tend to use it! You can do the same for seaweed too. It also makes you conscious of the dilution rate of different products - cheaper is not necessarily more economical. See more

07.01.2022 They are back. i was tidying some citrus today, when I noticed the unmistakable smell of bronze orange bugs. They are at egg and green nymph stage, so a simple ...oil spray will control them through smothering. Apply to all citrus and repeat spray in around six weeks to get the next generation. See more
