20.01.2022 Our 4 autumn drop weaner bulls had not been used to being fed but now have the idea. Weights at weaning ranged 341 - 404kg. Two are by Cadfor Falcon N2 and 2 by Cadfor Mr Kool K200. We will have these bulls scanned at around 12 months and then list them for sale.

15.01.2022 We enjoy posting to Facebook when things are going well. Sometimes we get a reminder that "life was not meant to be easy". [Who said that?] Yesterday we had a big day, pregnancy testing all our joined females. Al Rayner of RaynerAg did the scanning. We first tested the cattle at our leased property, "Amaroo", at Greenwich Park. There Wallawong Plain Sailing had been running with 2 groups up to 25 November. There were 24 heifers, 14 to 18 months. 2 were not in calf or 9...2% in calf. The second group were 16 older cows joined to calve from May. Of these 14 were in calf, while 2 cows which had reared twins and had not gone in calf to an earlier joining were still not in calf. Overall 90% conceived at "Amaroo". We then moved to "Cadfor" where we knew there had been problems. There were 2 joining groups with Cadfor Falcon N2 and Cadfor Paragon P103 being put in on 28 October to do the honours. However, both bulls got foot problems but a week apart. Cadfor Falcon running with 22 cows was found lame on 18 November but we got him right and he went back in on 24 Nov. Unfortunately he must have had a fever because nothing conceived after that date. That was a disaster - we have 9 cows not in calf in that group or a conception rate of 59%. Cadfor Paragon went severely lame on 25 November so we went over to "Amaroo" and brought Wallawong Plain Sailing back to go into Paragon's mob. In that group 13/15 conceived or 87%. Of the 15 animals not in calf, seven were 7 years or over and we have daughters retained which is some consolation. We made two mistakes and I should have known better. Firstly, we usually retain a mature bull to take over in an emergency. The bull that might have been in this role was Cam Grove Xman L16. We had used him for a few years and had plenty of daughters retained. We received a good offer for him from another breeder and he was sold in August. Luckily we did have Plain Sailing available but we really needed another bull. We had sold a good younger bull on 2 November and he would have filled in quite well. Second mistake was that we thought our prompt treatment of Cadfor Falcon and his quick recovery from his slight lameness would not harm his fertility. A fever will impair semen production for up to six weeks. That was a risk we took which has proved costly. In years past these empty cows would have switched to autumn calving but we are now 100% spring calving so they will be sold. Apart from the empty cows, our scanning day went smoothly. We had contemplated taking a second day to do the job because at "Cadfor" we also weighed all the calves. We had to travel to "Amaroo". which is over an hour away. and yard the herds at both properties. Many thanks to Al Rayner for his efficient scanning and operating the bail head and veterinary gates etc. Julian and Ethan kept the cattle moving up which was great.

15.01.2022 For the past 2 weeks we have enjoyed the company of son, Julian, and 5yo grandson, Henry, all the way from LA. Feeding the R bulls has been a task that Henry enjoys. Initially the bulls were a bit taken aback by one so small but now they have settled down.

04.01.2022 We pulled our two bulls out of their respective mating groups three days ago. There was a fair bit of bellowing and pawing the ground for a couple of days. Today we put them in adjoining paddocks separated by a single hot wire. All quiet now. In a week or so we will put them into one paddock. We like quiet bulls that do not want to fight.

02.01.2022 We moved 2 mating groups of cows into new paddocks yesterday. With the great grass growth we slashed around the fence lines to mark where the fence is and to get the grass off the electric wires. With the height of the grass it will be hard to find the calves. The bull is Wallawong Plain Sailing.
