25.01.2022 Toss up a Greek Masterchef Cooking session with the Cadorna House Greek Queen Christina, throw in a Big Day Out to Sheffield and the beautiful Lake Barrington for a picnic and sprinkle a lunch date with Freddie Mercury at Hogs Breath Cafe and what do you get? An average week at the best aged care facility in the North, that’s what! #cadornahouseagedcare #sheffieldtasmania #hogsbreathcafelaunceston

25.01.2022 Spotlight on Staff Favourite Movie When I was a kid I watched Titanic and I absolutely loved it It is an amazing love story and I have watched it at least 10 times. I also love Nepalese movies. Favourite Music- I feel the music and I love romantic songs. I love music all the time and love to sing songs in my own language. ... Favourite place in Tassie I got a chance to visit Mt Wellington last winter when it was covered in snow and the view from a mountain that high mesmerised me. I also find Cataract Gorge to be a very peaceful place and I often go there with my husband to relax my mind. Previous occupations - I have done a lot of different jobs in my life. In Nepal I was a teacher, receptionist, and even worked as a counsellor. Since I have been in Australia I have worked as a cleaner, house-keeper and whatever else to pay the bills but I am happy I have ended up in aged care as I love it. Something people would not know about me I am a very good dancer and it is my main hobby. I actually teach Nepalese dancing to most of my friends. I love cooking, making friends, travelling and photography.

24.01.2022 Thankyou to everyone who attended our family Christmas luncheon. The food was scrumptious (no photos sorry) and a huge Thankyou to Leeanne for the amazing salads and to Sara in the kitchen who prepared a delicious feast of lunch and desserts for 50 odd people. Santa popped in and sweated all over everybody and it was a great day out. Merry Christmas to everyone from all of us here at Cadorna House and we hope 2021 is a very special year for you all. #cadornahouseagedcare

24.01.2022 Happy Birthday to our former Queens Guard Charles!

22.01.2022 Our Christmas in July luncheon was so successful, we’ve decided to do it again in December. Probably the day before Boxing Day. Thanks Sara in the kitchen for all our delicious food! Now, for Easter in September. Why? Why not? Mmmm chocolate #cadornahouseagedcare

22.01.2022 The day has come! With Marie reminding us for the last 364 days, how could we forget??? Marie enjoyed a lunch out with all her friends and received lots of lovely presents.

20.01.2022 A big Thankyou to Adam and Jenita for entertaining our residents.

19.01.2022 Despite 4 months of lockdown this year and a period where the residents were restricted from getting off the bus, we have managed to see some wonderful places and have lots of fun. Our bus trips and picnics are very popular and Northern Tasmania has an abundance of beautiful places to see. This little video highlights some of them. Can’t wait for summer! #westtamarcouncil #rediscovertasmania #RenaultMaster #cadornahouseagedcare

19.01.2022 It was so good to see our long time resident Erika come out on the bus for our picnic lunch to Hadspen this week. It’s been a few years since Erika has been out of the facility and she said she had such a great time she wants to do it again next week for her birthday. Well, we can make that happen. #cadornahouseagedcare #riversidetasmania

18.01.2022 Elvis ‘The King’ had another comeback this week and it left the residents ‘All shook up’. No more livin’ down the end of lonely street when this hunk of burnin’ love put on his Blue suede shoes and sang like a Hound Dog. Some of the female residents copped a kiss from the King. They all voted that Elvis needs to ‘have a shave, you look homeless’...... um Thankyou. Thankyou very much. #cadornahouseagedcare #westtamarcouncil

17.01.2022 What a busy week at Cadorna House! A Bridport day trip, a concert, a casino meal, a Grand Final event, a great trip to Launceston Grammar to deliver cards from the residents to the preppies and a fantastic session of art therapy. #cadornahouseagedcare #arttherapy #cadornaleisureandlifestyle

17.01.2022 +++Spotlight on Staff+++ Raksha-Extended Care Assistant Favourite Movie I love Bollywood movies from India. My favourite film is a comedy called Chup Chup Ke. I have not really watched many other movies besides Bollywood films. Favourite Music - Melody songs from Bollywood movies mainly. ... Favourite place in Tassie Well I love Hobart and Mt Wellington but to be honest, we have not seen much of Tasmania as we work a lot and have small children so it is best if I tell you my favourite places in Australia. I loved the beaches in Wollongong and the Blue Mountains were very beautiful. Also, the peninsula near Botany Bay is called La Perouse and it was also very beautiful. Previous occupations I studied I.T in India and worked as a carer/nurse before I came to Australia. I am from Nepal originally but my family moved to India when I was aged 11. Something people would not know about me My husband was chosen for me by our parents and it was an arranged marriage as is the custom in our country. But I was very lucky because after we got married, I fell in love with my husband and we moved to Australia together. We now have two children aged 2 and 11 months and my husband Nabin also works here at Cadorna House as a carer. We work opposite shifts so one of us is always home with the children. We like working here very much and like the residents as they are nice people. #cadornahouseagedcare #riversidetasmania #tasmania #westtamarcouncil

17.01.2022 Resident Profile- Caroline I have so many memories of my travels around the world and I suppose because now I spend most of my days in bed, I know how important it is to live each day to the hilt because we never know what’s around the corner. My parents were free spirits and quite restless and I think that explains why I have always been a wandering spirit and lived in so many places. It wasn't until I moved to Launceston that I managed to settle in the one place for a c...Continue reading

16.01.2022 These silk quilting creations took three years of hard work from over 100 Deloraine townsfolk and are worthy of their own museum. We all loved checking them out. The whole museum is fantastic actually and highly recommended. #cadornahouseagedcare #delorainetasmania #yarnssilkmuseum #rediscovertasmania

16.01.2022 Just another Manic Monday I wish it was my birthday .... oh hang on! It is! The lovely Gwen celebrated her birthday in style with her family and friends. Happy Birthday Gwen! You’re the best.

15.01.2022 We took our new resident Freddie Mercury for a day out to see if he got along with everyone. He did thankfully but he kept going on about finding Somebody to love. He thought Poatina was both weird and beautiful and every time he ate a sandwich he yelled out ‘another one bites the dust’. What a great Big Day Out #2 was had by all. #poatinatasmania #cadornahouseagedcare

15.01.2022 Rest In Peace Gwen Keane. Aged 99. Condolences to her family and friends from all of us at Cadorna House.

15.01.2022 Many happy returns to these wonderful two ladies Marie and Dorothy. Happy Birthday to you both.

15.01.2022 What a fabulous Big Day Out #1! It was a tad too cold for snowball fights but we enjoyed a bus picnic and managed to walk to the top of the mountain through 4 foot of snow with a wheelchair and wheelie walkers. (Ok ok we drove but whatever). Our next big day out is to explore the other side of the Great Lakes up at Poatina. Can’t wait! #cadornahouseagedcare #greatlakestasmania #bigdayoutcadorna

14.01.2022 Resident Profile- Erika I was born in Vienna, Austria in the same year that World War 2 started in 1939. I remember the bombings very well. Our house was bombed but we survived. With my family and our neighbours, we hid in our cellar and after the bombs, I remember coming up the stairs to see our house gone as were all our neighbours houses. Smoke and fire everywhere. There were many killed and we were so lucky to not be amongst the dead. I lived with my mum Agnes and my fat...her Karl was a soldier fighting for his country. He was killed in action in 1945, just before the war ended. My mother was then alone raising me and my two brothers and we lived in a one room unit and my mother created bedrooms by hanging up curtains. There was no pension or charity back then so my mother used to walk for miles around the country towns around Vienna to sell slippers. It was the only income she had and we just got by. I helped my mother a lot and then when I left school, I got a job in an electrical goods factory. I had a boyfriend named Franz and we had heard that Australia was a land of new opportunities so we moved here in 1959. Franz was a baker but ended up working as a labourer in factories. We moved to Hobart for a little while but eventually shifted to Kayena on a little farm house after we married here in Tasmania. We have 4 children -Hans, Frank, Karl and Sylvia. I worked at Coats Patons for 15 years and we loved living in the Tamar Valley so we stayed there. I have been here at Cadorna for many years and I get very well looked after. I am not very mobile as my health is not the best but it is what it is. I am happy and I have been on a few outings lately and I have enjoyed it very much. #cadornahouseagedcare #storytelling

14.01.2022 Big Day Out #5 was great. The new manager Kim was the perfect host and after our lovely lunch, he gave everyone a free lavender ice cream and gift bag and chaperoned us on a bus tour through the lavender fields. The residents loved it so much! We missed the lavender blooming by a week but there was enough to keep us happy. We will be back! #cadornahouseagedcare #bridestowelavenderestate

13.01.2022 Zap!! ‘Electric Sunset’ is our latest painting in art therapy and the results were stunning. ‘Waterfall Bloom’ also worked out very well. All of our artwork will be part of a month long exhibition in the main foyer at Windsor Park Community Precinct near the end of the year. This is a great opportunity for the residents to showcase their talents and also provide great socialisation and engagement with the local community after a rough year. All artwork will be for sale at affordable prices. Nothing over $50! The proceeds will go towards buying art supplies for the residents. #cadornahouseagedcare #riversidetasmania #westtamarcouncil #arttherapyagedcare

13.01.2022 Spotlight on Staff- Becky Favourite Movie I love all the Harry Potter films and have watched them countless times. I also love the audiobooks that Stephen Fry narrates, but my absolute favourite movie is a comedy called Mums Night Out. Favourite Music - I am a big fan of movie themes. Hans Zimmer is a wonderful composer who has written music for many movies including Gladiator, Sherlock Holmes, The Lion King, Dunkirk and a few of the Batman movies. The last concert I we...nt to was the male singing quartet Il Divo. Favourite place in Tassie- Freycinet Peninsula, Coles Bay, Mt Wellington and Cradle Mountain when it snows, Sisters Beach and Hollybank Forest which is where my husband and I spent a lot of time walking during our courting so it’s very sentimental to me. Previous occupations I worked in cottage industries. I was a volunteer at Hagley Farm school for 11 years teaching spinning, churning butter and bread making in the old-fashioned method. It was a passion of mine and I loved it very much. I have been at Cadorna House for 6 months and I love the interactions I have with the residents and hearing their stories. Something people would not know about me I was born in the U.K and moved here when I was 6. My husband is a pharmacist at Mowbray Chemist. I have stood on top of a glacier in New Zealand. I have been whale watching in Coral Bay in W.A. I have 3 adult kids. I hate swinging bridges, small spaces and mosquitoes. I love crocheting and whittle my own crochet hooks. I am a passionate paper crafter and make my own cards. That should do for now! #cadornahouseagedcare

13.01.2022 Moonlight Love Birds. Fantastic effort from everybody.

12.01.2022 RESIDENT PROFILE "I am Launceston born and raised and my father worked on the railways for most of his life. Actually, if you go into the blacksmith’s factory at Inveresk now, you can see my fathers name on one of the machines there. He rode his pushbike everywhere as a lot of people did in those days. I grew up in Mayfield and it was a great place for kids. We were the first Australian family to move up there as there mainly British families living there when we arrived. Pla...Continue reading

12.01.2022 What a big week! Never a dull moment here at Cadorna.

12.01.2022 Holly our therapy dog has become so popular that she has informed us she is starting her own Instagram page and will be charging $20 per pat from here on in. Canine influencer anyone? #cadornahouseagedcare #groodle #westamarcouncil

12.01.2022 This is Mary Dunn from the community group ‘The Spinners’. They have kindly donated some of their lovely creations for our residents and with the recent cold snap, it’s perfect timing. A lovely blanket for everyone plus knitted sensory scarves for our residents with dementia. Thank you so much to Mary and The Spinners! #cadornahouseagedcare

12.01.2022 Today at Cadorna House, the residents were delighted to receive beautifully handwritten letters and envelopes from Grade 3 students at Riverside Primary School. The envelopes also contained home made badges with positive messages on them made by the Grade 1 students. The residents were absolutely over the moon with their surprise packages. Thank you so much to the kids and to their teacher Anita. We will be replying very soon! Happy Easter to you all from us at Cadorna House. #cadornahouseagedcare #westtamarcouncil #riversidetasmania

09.01.2022 Rest In Peace Doug Scott. 26/1/1934- 28/11/2020 You will be very missed by everyone here at Cadorna House. A true gentleman with a great sense of humour. We offer our sincere condolences to his wife Carolyn and his extended families. Below is Dougs story from our monthly newsletter. I was born in Queenstown in 1934, being the youngest of three boys. We lived there for about ten years until moving to Launceston and completing my education at St Patricks College. During my ...school years, I enjoyed playing football, cricket and tennis and I faired quite well academically. I went onto study dentistry at Melbourne University following in my father’s footsteps and continued with my sporting pursuits. After graduating, I practised dentistry for the next 50 years and had my own practice in Brisbane Street. I was known as the The Whistling Dentist due to constant whistling whilst working on my sometimes-nervous patients. I consider myself to be quite melodious. I met the love of my life Carolyn and we married in 1964 and had three children. We built our first and only house in Riverside and remained there until moving into Cadorna House. As a family we took up horse-riding and I bought an old Bedford truck to transport our ponies to gymkhanas, pony club and to Hawley Beach where we would stay regularly in my parent’s shack. Long weekends and Christmas holidays were often spent at Hawley where we would enjoy beach life and riding horses on the farm next door. I played pennant squash and tennis for many years and whilst I am not one to brag, I once held the title of state champion in squash. Later on, in life I took up cycling and then golf, when my knees began to slow down. I enjoyed many years of golf at the Riverside Golf Club playing pennant with my friends but I was rarely satisfied with my performance on the golf course. Since retirement I have enjoyed spending more time with Carolyn, frequenting the Basin Café in the Gorge and the Tailrace Centre for breakfast daily. Besides Carolyn and my children, my other great love is food. My favourite place to eat is Franco’s Italian Restaurant where we have dined regularly for many years and my favourite dish is Franco’s delicious minestrone

07.01.2022 Happy Birthday to these two ladies of leisure. Erika enjoyed her cake and a picnic lunch at Hollybank Forest on Wednesday and Sheila loved her party and bus trip to her old home town of Longford for an ice cream today.

06.01.2022 Bingo !!! Birthday !!! Cream cakes !!! Happy people !!!Brilliant !!! All the best Dennis.

06.01.2022 +++Spotlight on Staff+++ Adam-Leisure & Lifestyle Coordinator. Favourite Movie Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction and The Shining are my three favourite movies of all time and just about any Aussie film like The Castle I love. Except for Red Dog 2. That was rubbish.... Favourite Music- 90’s Grunge, Led Zeppelin, Pearl Jam and You am I. But I love everything from Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan and Frank Sinatra right through to some old school hard core punk. Favourite place in Tassie Wherever my kids are. I have seen so much of Tassie over the last ten years and feel blessed to live here. A few places that stick out are Strahan, St Columbas Falls, Bellingham, Port Arthur, Cradle Mountain, Bakers Beach and Stanley. I have recently discovered how special St Helens is too. I get my kids out into the bush rather than having screen time and they come alive when they are in mother nature. Safe and empty beaches and old growth forests are really cool. Previous occupations Have you got an hour? Everything from truck driver, shearing shed roustabout in N.S.W, Youth Worker, mine worker in S.A, Railway worker, Disability Carer, Entertainment Agent in W.A and erotic dancer. I worked in the Magistrates Court in Darwin for a year which was very ‘colourful’ you could say, but the worst job I ever had was at the Fish Mill in Bell Bay. It was gross and the smell permeated my clothing, skin, car, house and I was single at the time so it ruined my love life. Never again. I have also been singing rock and roll in pubs and clubs for the last 25 years and it’s provided me with a wealth of experiences and stories. I have done over 800 gigs here in Tassie over the last decade so I’ve met a lot of Taswegians and it’s a good gig making people happy. I’ve been at Cadorna House for five months now and really enjoy providing activities that the residents enjoy. I love Leisure and Lifestyle and it only took me 30 years to find the best job I’ve ever had and I absolutely love it. Family Married twice, I have an awesome wife Louise, 3 kids- Charlie 12, Amara 10 and Jebb is 5. All my family and in-laws live in Geelong so babysitters are thin on the ground. Something people would not know about me I’m claustrophobic, I try to avoid negative people, racists, whingers or drunk people if I’m sober and I hate bad pizza. I am 48 years old but only look about 27. Maybe 28 if you wear glasses. What? I’m serious. Whatever. #cadornahouseagedcare

06.01.2022 Spotlight on Staff- Jenita Favourite Movie I love historical movies like A Knights Tale, The Last Samurai and Legends Of The Fall. My favourite Aussie movie would be Crocodile Dundee. Favourite Music - I’m definitely an old school girl when it comes to what I like to listen to. I reckon music these days is rubbish. I love Creedence Clearwater, Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd and my favourite songs would be anything by Johnny Cash. I have never been to a concert. I am more of... a sit around a campfire and listen to some music with friends kind of a girl. Favourite place in Tassie- I used to go camping on Flinders Island when I was a kid so I love that place. And I love Underwood where I live and Bellingham beach is awesome too. Previous occupations I worked at McDonalds when I was younger then had a few years off working when I became a mum. I decided I wanted to work in aged care so went and did my Certificate 3 and started at Cadorna. I’ve been here four years now and changed to Lifestyle two years ago when a position came up. Working in a smaller facility suits me and I love the residents here and feel privileged to work with them all. Something people would not know about me I am an open book so not sure how to answer this one. I was very sporty when I was younger and played just about everything going. Gymnastics, Fencing, basketball and I was always doing something. I also travelled through the middle of Australia with my partner and my daughter a few years ago and it was great. We camped in a tent every night and drove through the Simpson and Tanami deserts and saw some amazing places. Whilst we were in Broome there was an earthquake which was a bit scary and we also saw hundreds of crocodiles throughout our journey up north. It was great but by the time we got home I never wanted to sleep in a tent ever again.

06.01.2022 Sweet Carolyn!! Good times never seemed so good. Happy Birthday to this delightful lady. #cadornahouseagedcare

05.01.2022 Holly the therapy dog is now a regular visitor to Cadorna and the residents love her. Her owner Michael is also a lovely man and we look forward to them coming a lot more in the future. #cadornahouseagedcare #groodle

03.01.2022 Happy Birthday Bev! Four more years of smiling and cracking us all up till the century. Have a great day from everyone at Cadorna.

03.01.2022 Spotlight on Staff-Maggie Favourite Movie I love lots of movies. Favourite Australian movie is Puberty Blues. I can see a bit of myself in those characters. I love Quentin Tarantino films and his quirky take on things. I saw Pulp Fiction 7 times at the cinema and got something new out of it everytime. And I loved Once Upon a time in Hollywood. I also have a soft spot for b grade schlock horror films like Friday the 13th and Halloween. Favourite Music - My first concert w...as Dire Straits at KGV oval in Hobart in 1983. My mum was the entertainment manager at Wrest Point when they had a real cabaret room so I’ve seen a tonne of international acts. I like everything from country right through to metal. Just don’t ask me about the song Adam made me sing at the staff Christmas party as out of all the songs I know, he chose one I’d never heard of. Who does that? No wonder everyone hates him. Favourite place in Tassie- I spent a lot of time camping with my kids down at Coles Bay every year and I had a shack once upon a time at Swanwick, so I will always have a soft spot for the east coast. All of Tassie is pretty great and we are spoilt here. Previous occupations My first job was at Birchalls. I was a florist at True Colors, which I loved but the downside of being a florist is that no one ever buys you flowers. I worked at Australia Post as a mail sorter and in retail in the Launceston Business Centre. Then 11 years ago, I re-invented myself and became a nurse and here I am in 2021 at Cadorna House. Something people would not know about me I started making jewelry at UTAS at Inveresk. Due to family reasons, I didn’t finish the course but I am able to create jewelry from powdered/granulated metals and I can stone set. I have made engagement and wedding rings for people I know. I have two children Amelia who is 20 and Ruby who is 17. I have 3 dogs, 2 cats and Ruby has two pet rats. I love animals and I’m a soft touch for re-homing them. I would love to win lotto and set up an animal rescue sanctuary out in the bush.

03.01.2022 Happy Fathers Day to all you dads out there and thanks to everyone who came to our family barbecue.

02.01.2022 We have such a talented bunch here at Cadorna. Here’s one of them. Dennis G Sayer. #cadornahouseagedcare #legoaustralia

01.01.2022 All aboard ! Our Inveresk Tram ride was a step back in time. We also had a lovely lunch at the Blue Cafe.

01.01.2022 Happy Birthday to Hannah who turned 95 on Monday and to Della who was 85 yesterday!
