13.01.2022 Our take on the Budget is up. It's Malcolm Turnbull just playing the politics of blame once more, going after the young, the vulnerable and the poor. Read more here: http://www.asumembers.org.au/budget_2017

08.01.2022 The government are still indicating that they will cut the company tax rate at the May 03 Budget. This is despite revelations that a signifcant number of businesses do not pay their fair share. Today, 50 prominent Australians published an open letter to the Government asking them not to cut the company tax rate, saying Australians need services to and that fairness should be the cornerstone of the upcoming federal budget. So, what do you think? Will the next budget bring a fairer tax system or will we be facing more cruel cuts to essential services?

08.01.2022 Check out the ACCDP's submission on the NDIS Code of Conduct Discussion Paper here:

08.01.2022 Decisions about the meaning, purpose, and requirements of Community and Disability practice are being made constantly but often without reference to good practice in service delivery. We know that a lot of different people influence minimum standards for employment and for the delivery of services in the Community and Disability sectors but these are inconsistent and vary greatly across the industry. Do you think that should change?... To find out more about the Australian College of Community and Disability Practitioners, the new industry wide and practitioner led professional body for workers in social and community services. Go to: www.accdp.org.au.

07.01.2022 Federal Minister for Social Services, Christian Porter proposed 'to change the NDIS Act to allow him to give directions, make appointments and rules "in consultation with the states but without the need for agreement".' NSW and Victoria are not having a bar of it, and the fight looks set to continue at the next COAG meeting. Does this sound like choice and control? Or does this sound like the government is trying to find a way to cut costs and break promises? Let us know in the comments what you think of Porter's Plan.

07.01.2022 Is Malcolm Turnbull's tax plan just another cover for reducing services? Gerg Jericho thinks it is. With the budget coming up in May and possibly an election as early as July, it is essential that we understand the Government's intentions around funding essential services like health, eduction and social and community services. So what do you think? Is this a sound plan, or is this just another way for the government to cut essential services?

06.01.2022 BREAKING: It has been announced today that the Federal Government is going to reverse several of its funding cuts to Aboriginal Legal Services and community legal services. We will post information as it comes to hand. 05.01.2022 The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry want to strip penalty rates from awards (only giving them to workers who negotiated them in an enterprise agreement) and remove unfair dismissal protections for workers in small business. 03.01.2022 It is not just community services in the firing line, the NSW Liberal Government has so far refused to rule out privatising water, TAFE fees are expected to rise, and we know that Mike Baird is desperate to sell off the electricity network this cute video from Unions NSW outlines why NSW is Not for Sale and how it is a raw deal for all of us.

03.01.2022 More evidence today of the Federal Government's savage cuts to our sector. A change in Prime Minister has not meant any change in this Government's contempt for the important work community workers do every day supporting and advocating for the some of the most vulnerable people in our community. Has your service been affected by these cuts? Join the ASU to join the fight to save our local community services!

03.01.2022 Service providers say there is a surge in young LGBTI people seeking help for homelessness, but the trend is not being captured because data is not currently collected about service users sexual orientation. FACS is currently reviewing its data collection criteria and considering including questions about sexual orientation and gender identity. Some advocates have privacy concerns but others think this is an important step. Is tracking the sexual orientation of service users ...is important? How useful are the current data collection criteria? What would you change if you could? Let us know in the comments.

02.01.2022 Far from facing a budget blowout, this article argues that not only is the NDIS is on track is is also poised to create a lot of jobs in disability services and a significant contribution to the economy. Now more than ever, we need to work together to make sure those jobs are secure and ensure the disability sector is safe and sustainable.

02.01.2022 Community and disability sector work is increasingly more complex and demanding and consequently, the set of skills and qualifications in our sector is also changing. ASU members are highly skilled professionals so it should be you, ASU members, who determine and drive the future of skills, qualifications and training needed for the community and disability sectors. Can you take 10 minutes to comment on your current skills and qualifications, and the qualifications and skills you would like to develop?

01.01.2022 Another day another politician warning about a blow out in the NDIS. This time, it is WA Premier Colin Barnett. The Federal Government on the other hand, is saying that there is absolutely no budget blowout. And that the scheme is being delivered on time, on budget and with excellent levels of participation. So what do you think? Is the NDIS proceeding according to plan or is there some kind of coverup about how much the NDIS is costing as Mr Barnett suggests?
