20.01.2022 Some of you may have heard about our campaign Just for Jack running in HARDNOX at the moment. Already we have had generous members and friends of the gym come... forward to chip in! Thank you, we can assure you it’s going to the best little champ around! Here is more of Jackson’s story. Jackson is a 13 year old boy who lives in Wongarbin near DUBBO NSW. He lives with him mum, dad and 3 siblings. The family moved from Sydney almost 8 years ago in order to seek support for Jackson at school. Since their move, Jackson has been diagnosed with a number of disorders, one that has been deemed, life limiting. Jackson was a happy baby who didn’t cry much at all. His mother knew at 4 months old that there was something not quite right about his development, however was turned away from specialists and doctors, who claimed that it was just global delay and he would catch up. At age 5, in kindy, Jackson was removed from a support class and placed in a mainstream classroom because he didn’t have an official diagnosis. He couldn’t talk and had not long started walking. Unable to change the system, the family decided to move to a regional area in order to give Jackson better support at a smaller school. It was in this rural town that Jackson was first diagnosed with Autism level 1 at age 6. This allowed him to enter a support classroom at the local school. Jackson was attending school full time and also attending speech and occupational therapy 2-3 times a week. While the diagnosis was helpful, his parents Cher and Craig felt that there was something more as Jackson was still quite delayed and his walking had become quite awkward and difficult. He had began to wet the bed and he had also began having seizures. Cher and Craig continued to question therapists and doctors. Finally, at age 9, the doctors granted Jackson a MRI where they found that Jackson’s brain had not developed correctly. He was missing the Corpus Callosum, the part of the brain responsible for allowing messages to travel to other parts of the body. He also had a benign cyst on his brain and many other abnormalities. The doctor described his brain as a big mess and commented that he had no idea how Jackson functions. Armed with this information, the family were directed back to Westmead Children’s Hospital where they would travel the 5 hour trip 2-3 times a term to see the neurologist, a bladder specialist, epilepsy specialists, orthopaedic specialists and an array of therapists. Fast forward a few years and Jackson has undergone some extensive surgery for this legs, many many tests and investigations. More recently, the doctors have discovered, through genetic testing, that Jackson has a rare disorder called Tublinopathy or TUBB3 for short. The disorder is so rare that at this stage there are only 40 recorded cases world wide. The children the family engage with from all over the world with this disorder are not only born with brain abnormalities but are also typically born unable to walk, talk, feed themselves and most are blind or have eye sight issues. Jackson, however is the only one in the world with a specific TUBB3 genetic mutation. This mutation type means that Jackson was born ‘normal’ but will not remain this way. This mutation presents as motor sensory neuropathy and will see the nerves in Jackson’s body start to deteriorate and die. It is expected that Jackson will lose the ability to see, eat, and walk, and to communicate. Due to the nature of the disorder, the doctors have told the family that there is only a small chance that Jackson will see adulthood. At present, the nerves in Jackson’s legs have deteriorated quite significantly and he uses a wheelchair to travel long distances. His bladder also causes Jackson some concern and he is forced to toilet frequently and to wear nappies. The other nerves beginning to cause Jackson concern today are the nerves in his eyes, hands/fingers, and now in his chest and lungs. Jacksons courage and determination through the whole process of diagnosis and beyond has been nothing but admirable. He still continues to smile and bring so much happiness and love to all those that meet him. He has a huge heart and cares so much for others. This care saw him fund raise more than $7000 for Ronald McDonald house in a walk and he was made the ambassador for 2019. He tries his hardest in all he does and his spirit means he is a fighter who never give up. The family have never given up on Jackson either. Not only have they fought to find him the best care and help, they have provided him with all he needs (therapy, supports, equipment) over the past 13 years without complaint. They recently moved house to support Jackson’s wheelchair needs. They have stayed strong and dealt with all that has been thrown at them whilst still trying to provide Jackson and siblings with the most ‘normal’ life possible. It’s now that Jackson’s disorder has progressed that Jackson is in need of some equipment to keep him as comfortable and mobile as possible. While some of this can be ordered through the government, there are other things that he needs that either cannot he obtained or has at least a 12 month or more wait. Not people to ask for assistance of any means, friends and family came together to encourage and help Jackson’s mother put this story/page together to raise funds to for Jackson. This is where you come in... Any donation towards helping Jackson would be greatly appreciated don’t forget that HARDNOX will match your dollar!! All money will go straight towards covering the cost of Jackson’s equipment/medical costs/needs now and in the future. If you are unable to donate, please make sure you share the link because spreading awareness about this disorder is also vital. Thank you in advance for your support, we look forward to helping the little champ and his family!
