23.01.2022 The majestic residence named Baroona is located on Howard Street in Paddington and was designed by Benjamin Backhouse and constructed for William Draper Box in 1866. This photo was taken 20 years later in 1886 from Baroonas gardens looking towards the drawing room. The house is single storey brick with a corrugated iron gabled roof and surrounded by verandahs on all sides.
23.01.2022 In 1925, few people owned personal transport so services were in the business of delivery, including fresh produce. Conrads butchers in Paddington had this Rugby brand delivery van: the chassis built in the USA, and the body built and installed onto the vehicle locally here in Brisbane. Open- cab vehicles like this were quite common and popular in Queensland at that time, providing good ventilation and easy access for the delivery driver on the kerb side.
21.01.2022 The Paddington Tram depot was constructed in 1915 on Latrobe Terrace, the site where Cafe YoYo and the Paddington Central Shopping Centre now stands. This photo shows the depot under construction. Built on the side of a hill from timber and corrugated iron panels, the front of the depot was at street level with the rear supported by a forest of timber supports as shown here. Some were 15 metres high.

19.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW? Brazil couldnt afford to send its athletes to the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles because of the Great Depression, so they put the athletes on a ship with 50,000 sacks of coffee and sold the coffee beans at ports along the way to be able to pay for the trip.
19.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW? Coffee beans arent beans at all. Theyre seeds: the pits of cherry-like berries found on the flowering coffea shrub.
18.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW? Australia imported 112,740,000kg of coffee in the 2019/20 financial year. That is enough for approximately 14 billion shots of coffee!

18.01.2022 One of the most common types of trams in Brisbane were referred to as matchboxes. There were 62 trams like this built for Brisbane between 1897 and 1904. Tram number 24 pictured here in 1906, ran the Paddington to Bulimba Ferry line. This style of tram was especially popular in the hot Brisbane summers due to the easy air flow.

17.01.2022 Playground equipment has changed a lot in one hundred years as this 1918 picture shows. This park in Ithaca had swings mounted to wooden poles, and the see-saw is a pole with a wooden seat on each end.

16.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW? Whilst a large number of industries around the world are now dominated by major players and industrialisation, coffee is still mostly produced by millions of smallholder farmers across the world, with the harvesting, drying and fermenting of coffee beans done by hand.

11.01.2022 Following on from last weekends photo of Bardon, this is the view from the opposite direction. Also taken in 1929, the photo shows the water tower standing atop the hill and the large homes in Tooth Avenue in the background, and the houses of Macgregor Terrace in the foreground. Back then, there was only one tram line but that was later duplicated so trams could travel both directions at the same time as the area grew in population.

08.01.2022 In the flood of 1930, this car was stranded at the corner of Baroona Road, Fernberg Road, Haig Road and Heussler Terrace in Milton. The people to the right of the photo have waded out in their swimsuits to help push out the stranded vehicle.
07.01.2022 Back in 1900 when this photo was taken, this area was known as Ithaca. Ithacas first volunteer fire brigade was formed in 1890 and its station was built near Arthur Terrace, where 41 Enoggera Terrace is today. The building served as the first fire station in the area, until the new Ithaca Fire Station was completed at the other end of Enoggera Terrace in 1919.

Hundreds of people attended to see who would win this motorbike hill climb, with a prize of 2/2 to the rider with the fastest time of the day. Purtell Park is now a rugby league field and is the home ground of the Wests Juniors Rugby League Football Club.
04.01.2022 Just up the road is the Ithaca Town Council Chambers, at the corner of Kennedy Tce and Enoggera Tce. After Ithaca was proclaimed a town in 1903 by the Queensland Government they needed to build a town headquarters. This building was constructed 110 years ago at the cost of 1100, and was used as the towns headquarters from then until 1925, when the Town of Ithaca was absorbed into the City of Brisbane. The building is now operated by Communify and is known as the Ithaca Hall.

03.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW? According to legend, coffee was accidentally discovered by a goat herder who noticed his goats were very energetic after they grazed on the berries of one specific type of tree. He told an abbot who made a drink out of the berries, which kept him awake and alert throughout a long evening of prayers. This knowledge quickly spread to other monks, and eventually throughout the whole world as the wonderful drink we know and love today as coffee.
