24.01.2022 We need help at the Xmas Bunnings BBQ! Can you spare some time tomorrow?

23.01.2022 Woodies... It's time to get back into the workshop. We are officially 'open', but with some restrictions. At this stage, the weekly schedule looks like this:... Tuesday 9am - 12pm with Bruce Wednesday 5pm - 8pm with Rob Thursday 9am - 12pm with Wally Saturday 9am - 12pm with Bruce/Wally/Rob Rules: 1. You MUST sign-in, with your full name in clear writing. 2. If you bring a visitor, they MUST INDIVIDUALLY sign-in on our normal sign-in book, entering their address and contact phone number. 3. $5 MUST go in the tin - we don't have any revenue right now due to Bunnings, so no more IOU's. If you're using the equipment, you must put $5 in the tin. We appreciate all of our people who do chores around the guild, but even the committee members put $5 in each time. 4. Your work area, machines and tools must be wiped down and sterilised after using them. Sprays and wipes are readily available. 5 Keep your personal distance, we can have up to 50 people at the Guild, so numbers-wise we're fine, but don't exceed 1 person per 2 sqm in a space. If we sign-in, pay $5, clean often and keep our distance, then we're almost back to normal. Please note: the current keyholders for the time being are Bruce, Wally, Guido, Jonny, Rob and Tim. Welcome back (but please stay safe). Rob - President (Open sign, courtesy of Shutterstock).

20.01.2022 Dear Woodies and Friends, I trust this email finds you happy and well. My apologies for not being in touch with you all of late. On Monday night this week, the Management Committee met on a conference call to discuss the ongoing situation and when we might be reopening.... At this time, we've taken a cautious route, and won't be reopening yet. Examples of cases in Rockhampton (with the Qld Health Nurse who was infected and working for 10+ days without knowing) and now the unexplained COVID death in Blackwater this week make it a dangerous proposition to be rushing given our membership. The Committee will be meeting again on Monday 8th June and fortnightly thereafter to discuss a potential reopening date and what processes will be required for us to do so. I know that all of you are looking forward to seeing each other and getting 'back on the tools'. If you have any woodworking photos/videos/posts to share on our Facebook page, please post them to the page and I'll approve them as soon as I see them. We'd love to have more content to share with friends and community followers while the Guild is closed. Kind regards (and stay safe), Rob. -- Rob Sattler President 16 Knight Street, Portsmith QLD 4870 http://woodiescairns.org.au

20.01.2022 COVID-19 Update... We’re closed.

19.01.2022 Away from the Guild while we are still on Covid19 closure but turning must go on.

17.01.2022 This guy will be back again on Sunday, 19th July! (the one on the right that is, David Drescher!). David's fully equipped 'shop-bus' will be at the Guild on Sunday 19 July from 9am to 1pm. ... Public visitors are absolutely welcome! COVID-19 Restrictions Apply - EVERYONE MUST sign-in at the Guild with their full name, address and phone number for COVID record-keeping purposes. Please come on down, use some of our hand sanitiser and check out David's incredible shop full of goodies, up here all the way from Brisbane.

16.01.2022 Hi Woodies! Some good news finally - we're going to (cautiously) re-open. Thank you all for your patience during this time, we've preferred to be safe rather than sorry.... Here's the plan for this SATURDAY: - 8am til 10.30am (possibly later) - All hands on deck please. - We need to unload the clubhouse of all the hand-tools etc and put them back into the workrooms and cupboards. - We need to do some general cleaning and a tidy-up. - Wally will need help checking over all of the machines, lubricating them etc. - Sheldon/Neville/Guido and co - if you guys can help getting the lathe room in top shape (I'd imagine the chisels will have light corrosion on them by now) - It shouldn't need to be said, but please don't be using equipment until everything is back in order and the guild is clean and tidy. Bruce and Wally will be in charge. - If you have even the slightest inkling of any sort of sniffle, fever, cough etc, DO NOT COME. Anyone with any sort of illness will be immediately turned away. I'm sorry I hadn't sent this out after Monday night's Exec Meeting but between a full work schedule and feeling crook since Tuesday evening, I hadn't gotten to it. I've got a full-on head cold, so unfortunately I won't be able to come on Saturday now. Jonny, Michael, Wally and Bruce will be at the Guild tomorrow afternoon at 2pm to sort out COVID-19 signage and draft up a plan for managing the Guild through this period. I have the Guild trailer at the moment, so I'll drop it back in tomorrow before the guys arrive. Other news: I had a call from Gary at Knox Woodies in Victoria yesterday, wanting to check our details and share their newsletter and Guild directory. Here's the link: http://www.knoxwoodies.org.au/current David Drescher is coming up with his woodworking mobile shop on Sunday 19th of July for the day (he'll be at Innisfail woodies on the Saturday). We'll have an Open Day that day to coincide with his visit. I wish I could see you all on Saturday for our Grand Reopening (i.e. working bee), but alas I have to follow the rules. Here's to a safe and happy Guild, Rob. -- Rob Sattler President 0414 990 360 | 16 Knight Street, Portsmith QLD 4870

16.01.2022 Our First General Meeting since February! It was wonderful to see such a big turnout for our first meeting back at the Guild after our COVID-19 closure. Plenty of old faces and new ones too (Welcome Han and Omar!). ... While our President Rob Sattler showed off his platter and first segmented urn; and Workshop Manager Wally Steel had an impressive wooden storage box, our woodturning expert Neville Crossley definitely won the 'Sharpest Saw' award this month for his set of plywood bowls and vase. The 'Golden Bowl' award this month went to Treasurer Tim Irving for his brilliant work in managing our finances and memberships, and for being a wise and steady sounding board throughout the pandemic this year. Thank you all for coming. For those who we missed - you missed out on a great meeting! Our AGM is next - See you on Saturday 5 September 2020 at 10am.

15.01.2022 AGM this morning! If you haven’t yet renewed for this year, please be at the Guild at 9am to sign your membership form... Only new and renewed members may attend the AGM.

14.01.2022 Working Bee @ The Guild Saturday from 8am - please come along and help out

13.01.2022 Great to be back in the workshop again Wednesday night visitors welcome - 5pm til 8.30pm. Come and check it out and say hi.

12.01.2022 COVID-19 Update The Guild is not yet reopened officially but we are now in preparations to do so shortly. Please keep watch on this page as we’ll update everyone soon.... Rob - President

12.01.2022 Wednesday night crew at the Guild New members and visitors are always welcome - it’s a great midweek escape.

09.01.2022 First meeting of 2020 A fantastic morning (despite the heat) where we made some great suggestions and plans for the year ahead. Three things to mention: ... 1. Thank you to Cairns RSL for their very generous grant last year - we now have all of the tools, equipment and defibrillator we intended to get with our community grant. 2. Cheers to our fantastic Treasurer Tim Irving (and ex-Ambo) for giving a quick Cardiac Arrest 101 session so we know how to use our new defibrillator. 3. Congrats to Wally Steel for taking out the first ever ‘Sharpest Saw’ and ‘Golden Bowl’ awards this month. He’s a credit to the Guild and we’re ever so grateful for his service.

07.01.2022 Wednesday WOODING is on tonight... Gates open and machines running from 5pm

06.01.2022 Job well done! Thank you Monty! Joely Sullivan saw a post I put on Facebook selling some of our lovely woodwork. She approached me about having a skateboard rack made. I put it out to our members and Monty took the job on. He has done a wonderful job. We are here to help, if you want restorations, repairs or even commission us to make something for you. If you want anything done just message us and we will be happy to help. #cairnsanddistrictwoodworkersguild #restorations #woodworkrepairs #joincairnswoodworkersguild.
