25.01.2022 This afternoon Logan Gentle was awarded his Shodan. Since completing his probationary black belt grading in August last year, Logan has become a PCYC volunteer helping to take 3 karate classes weekly. Yesterday was his 16th birthday and today was his 500th lesson since he started training 5 years ago. In addition to his continued training Logan needed to complete a mandatory fitness test involving a total of 8 kata, 100 push-ups and 100 sit-ups. ... On behalf of everyone, Congratulations Logan .
25.01.2022 Our Sensei aren’t perfect and they don’t know everything. You can however rest assured they will continue to work towards being hard working role models, who often sacrifice their own development for yours ...
22.01.2022 Karate starts and finishes with courtesy.
21.01.2022 Congratulations Kenzie, Jasmine, Harry, Zach, Sheryl, Riley and Shanti on successfully completing their grading tonight. Everyone did exceptionally well despite there being no air conditioning and the stop watch issues we encountered.
20.01.2022 INFORMATION FOR PARENTS We train and teach Okinawan karate in a way that our old school masters intended. Karate has the potential to be life changing but it requires a long-term commitment and a mature attitude. Parents must know that what we do is NOT... - just an activity to keep children occupied - an alternative to after school hours care - just for children or just for people who are already fit - going to instantly improve your child’s fitness, manners and attention span - an alternative to sport that can be done short term in the off season We have and will continue to produce numerous valuable members of society whose years of training have assisted them become Doctors, Police Officers, Scientists, Legal/Medical Professionals & Teachers amongst other occupations. One thing all these successful people have in common is that their parent/s took an active interest in their children’s karate development. In many instances parents trained alongside their child/children. We will never water down our curriculum or lower our standards to enable everyone to achieve. There must be a need for consistent, challenging effort. We understand that many parents, and children, want to 'give it a go' or 'try something new' but everyone involved needs to understand that it will take consistent practice and dedication to be an actual karate exponent. It may not be easy, but it will be worth it. Our Redlynch Dojo will accept students from the age of 10 and Edmonton Dojo from the age of 8. Please contact us if you need more information or bring your children and jump on the mats with them and see what it’s all about.
20.01.2022 Please enjoy some highlights of the 7 kata that were on display at last nights southside grading .
17.01.2022 Great post from Bruno Chagas Sensei .
16.01.2022 We absolutely love this description of kata and karate in general from Bruno Chagas Sensei of Puro Karate in Brazil . Classical Karate kata are invaluable, as they are the way of recording the technical and tactical foundations of our martial art. And like any essential record, they are not a mere random and purposeless organization of movements. If they were, it just wouldn't make sense to give so much importance to kata. It would just be an exotic dance. And the mast...ers of the past were certainly more intelligent and more practical than that. The record formed by the kata has reached us, but the way of reading them has been lost over time, for various reasons, ranging from political issues, to the sportive focus given to Karate and also by the second war, which devastated Okinawa, destroyed many records and killed a significant part of the population. Kata are like hieroglyphs, which need a specific and detailed work to be unveiled and stop being merely a serie of meaningless images. The good news is that rescuing the way of reading kata is possible. With a lot of effort, critical sense and criteria, looking for what was left by the masters of the past in terms of traditions and technical descriptions, among other methodologies. It is a job to put together a great puzzle, which requires patience and dedication. But from the moment the pieces fit together and the image begins to form, fascinating and very efficient art emerges. That is why this work is so important and serious. Karate is an incredible art, but it requires dedication. In order to catch a glimpse of everything it represents, constant dedication in training and studies is necessary. It is necessary to keep the cup empty and sincerely be willing to learn. But each new learning and each new discovery is certainly rewarding.
15.01.2022 School holiday ‘ateme waza’ fun
15.01.2022 Don’t forget, your couch can also be a life threatening enemy. Get up, go train and keep it real .
14.01.2022 Just because it’s been silly hot today Misha Sensei and our excellent yudansha took training outside. Even oppressive heat and relentless dad jokes will not deter our members from their grading preparation .
13.01.2022 Sadly the first statement in this post is true. So many karate-ka are blissfully ignorant when it comes to our complete art. Having said that, there are an increasing number incredible people like Samir Berardo Sensei, who continue to share their passion for old school, pragmatic karate .
11.01.2022 What a brilliant effort during ne waza on Friday’s grading. It was so good to see those grading, not only using the skills they had practiced, but also show the ability to improvise and apply kata oyo. Some great work from those performing the role of ‘uke’ too. They pushed those grading sufficiently so that they were thoroughly tested but they also knew when to assist or yield. We are so very proud of everyone’s efforts .
11.01.2022 Wash or soak it yes. Probably best seperate to your other laundry. Thanks Noah Legel Sensei for you sound advice.
10.01.2022 ‘As much as karate has been modified over time and other purposes have been incorporated into the practice, the methods of long ago remain registered in kata. Studying the applications of kata is to discover the original purpose of our art and to verify the efficiency of a knowledge accumulated through generations.’ This quote is from our friends at Muidokan karate .
10.01.2022 More great work form the good people at Karate Culture Functional vs Fictional. There is so much wrestling, grappling and throwing in karate. Grab hold of a friend in the dojo and bring your kata to life .
06.01.2022 Sometimes we even use 2 hands. kakie .
06.01.2022 Happy Birthday 12th Birthday Shanti . We hope you enjoyed your Seiyunchin themed birthday hug
06.01.2022 Last night 12 year old Shanti left everything in the dojo. Due to some sort of stopwatch malfunction the poor girl had to endure more than 3 and a half minutes of kumite. Her effort was inspired and left her highly emotional once completed. Well done Shanti .
05.01.2022 So good to see people on the other side of the world bringing old-school karate to life .
05.01.2022 ATTENTION PCYC EDMONTON DOJO MEMBERS Starting on the 9th of October our southside Friday classes will be from 5:30pm until 7:30pm. As the PCYC reception closes at 6:00pm it would be greatly appreciated if everyone could arrive on time to pay for class.... Don’t forget to check your watches next Friday...
05.01.2022 Last night we had a surprise grading for one of our students who is unable to make it to our formal grading next week. Well done Josh! You did a great job
03.01.2022 A big thank you to Sergeant Steve, branch manager of PCYC Edmonton for his on going support for our dojo. Logan wanted to thank him with a jodan mawashi geri . We don’t know what happened next. We assume Logan is still in custody .
03.01.2022 Here’s another angle on the same bout of ne waza. Things to look out for - Riley’s fancy gyaku waza’s Shanti never giving up until she gets the top position Lana successfully wrapping up Riley’s fists by using her hair .
02.01.2022 This is what happens when a bored karate-ka goes to visit their parent at Bunnings .
01.01.2022 Zach knows the truth! All Butterflies know karate . What’s a helicoptor?
01.01.2022 Kumite is intended for the practice of kata . Nice to see our friends at Puro Karate & Shuri Karate helping share this knowledge with the world.
01.01.2022 Yesterday saw our last session with the Bentley Park College STEP Year 6 transitional group. Yet again it was a privilege for Misha Sensei and I to help increase student’s self-confidence and conflict avoidance skills through Okinawan karate. Thanks kids it was fun .
