25.01.2022 Today we're taking a special trip down memory lane to celebrate Air Niugini's 45th Anniversary servicing the region On this day in 1975, a Fokker 27 took off from Port Moresby and a newly independent Papua New Guinea for Cairns Airport, in what was to become our first international carrier. Today the airline flies Boeing 767s to Cairns and prior to COVID operated 11 services per week between Cairns and Port Moresby. 22.01.2022 As National Recycling Week wraps up, we wanted to share some of the sustainability steps we're taking at Cairns Airport to reduce our waste footprint. Over the past 12 months: 13.7 tonnes of coffee grinds have been diverted from landfill to be used as mulch, and 2,500 compostable coffee cups have been used as pots to grow native butterfly vine seedling.... We've increased our recycling rate by 15% through initiatives including the Containers for Change QLD Refund scheme, with funds donated to the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia and Lifeline suicide prevention. We’ve crunched 873kg of food waste through our new macerator. The compost generated through this initiative has been delivered to Community Gardens across Cairns to grow more food.
