25.01.2022 The fire warden is not asleep on the job. Our hostel cat just loves this spot for a morning nap and the chance to catch a breeze.

23.01.2022 Chris Muggleton (Pichard) has made a welcome return to Cairns City Backpackers after 26 years. She arrived in Australia from Switzerland in 1994 as a 23-year-old, staying at the hostel when it was known as Gone Walkabout. I had nothing booked. It was my first backpackers. I didn’t even know what a backpacker was. She fell in love with the Far North, married a local and now lives in Cooktown.

16.01.2022 Christine’s birthday wasn’t forgotten by the lovely French, German and Colombian travellers at Cairns City Backpackers, who bought streamers, balloons, made cocktails and are cooling some sangria for later. Most of the people here are stranded for one reason or another, including Christine who can’t get back to her home town of Perth and another guest who can’t get back to Weipa.

12.01.2022 This hostel has been operating throughout the Corona crisis with plenty of space for social distancing. The Balinese style gardens and patios are great; it's the cheapest tariff in the city; packers come from South America and Europe, mingling with musicians, buskers and chefs in the city it's only 700m walk to Cairns Central. Others are van travellers, drawn to the free parking out front. Come and join a chilled crowd. You wont want to leave.

02.01.2022 A team effort today as Marco, Rosalind and Pascale removed decades of dirt and grime from the purple passage at Cairns City Backpackers in preparation for painting. Previous colour schemes were revealed and it seems someone forgot to paint behind the front door. Perhaps they ran out of paint. Soon to be replaced by a light colour that will be easier on the eye.
