25.01.2022 Does anyone else have this problem with their slobbering dog?
24.01.2022 Seek help from a balanced dog trainer if you can't control your dog! I was walking my dog down to a local Cafe this morning when Libby and I rounded a corner to an extremely reactive dog with his owner in (I thought) control. I kept Libby at the heel and walked past it, telling her to ignore the other dog. As I was walking past this dog was so reactive and aggressive it was pulling the female handler over as the male dog lunged at my dog. In the efforts to get to my dog, I w...as bitten. It was apparent that the owner had very little control over her dog in the end. I spoke to her about her dog and she had done positive only training, with no success. I told her she needed to seek the help of a professional dog trainer with experience in both positive AND negative training methods to sort her dog out. I didn't contact the council or pursue anything further as I know her dog would be put down, because it was so reactive and I do not trust the rspca or the council to allow the dog a chance to be effectively rehabilitated with a balanced training method. Please, if you are unable to control your dog, get the help of a balanced trainer to avoid incidents just like these!

20.01.2022 I need to get a bulldog... and a leaf blower!!
19.01.2022 Training in drive. We can get amazing results from our best friends by finding out what motivates them and using clear communication to our dog to work them. Marker training is an outstanding system (similar to clicker training) that allows us very clear communication between dog and handler. You can hear my positive marker here "Ja!" with my dog Libby. I know that she is motivated to play with the ball on the rope and I use that as her reward. ... I can help you get your dog to a very high standard of obedience, just give me a call! Matt.
16.01.2022 I've had a few questions about using an e-collar on my personal dog, hopefully this video may dispel some myths. Please don't hesitate to ask me any more questions, I would love to clear up any confusion you may have about Remote Training Collars :)
16.01.2022 Remember to keep your pets cool and have access to plenty of fresh water to drink this summer! If you notice your dog rapidly panting, excessively drooling, skin hot to touch or red gums; these are signs of heat stress! Cool your pup down asap!
15.01.2022 Another article and study that goes against the "dominance myth". I believe it's important to share this information so we can understand our dogs better and learn to deal with the problems we face as effectively as possible.
14.01.2022 Had the opportunity of a lifetime to catch up with one of Australia's best balanced trainers today! The Paw Man - Canine Behavior Specialist has such amazing knowledge to share!
13.01.2022 This is a great write up on e-collars and how to use them. I try to explain Remote Training Collars in this way every time. If I decide it's will be necessary to use on a dog - the owners are the first ones to wear the collar and feel the stimulation. Their reactions are always along the lines of "oh, that's not so bad!" Feel free to get in contact with me for more info or demonstrations! - Matt.
13.01.2022 Here's Libby and I doing some training down at the local park! Although this was distraction free, she can do the same under distraction! If you want this sort of control, then get in touch with me! -Matt.
12.01.2022 This is write up is spot on. A dog will work through an aversive, not be destroyed by it. When delivered correctly, a correction is just as important to learning as a reward.
10.01.2022 Heeling training
09.01.2022 Big news from Balanced Dog Training! Matt and Libby have relocated to Brisbane for further opportunities to learn from some wonderful trainers and experts in all fields of dog training and behaviour modification! We will still be available for personal one on one training around Brisbane, and can help redirect any enquiries in Cairns to some great trainers :) ... Have a wonderful day!
06.01.2022 I love this photo :)
05.01.2022 Hey guys! With this big storm in brissy remember to bring your pets indoors! Don't forget not to "comfort" your pets if they're acting scared. This will only serve to increase the fear they're feeling as you're rewarding that mental state. If you ignore the behaviour and your dog sees you acting as normal, the likelihood of a fear of lightning and thunder will decrease.
04.01.2022 This is fantastic to see RTCs being used correctly and effectively and finally being shed in a positive light! for today tonight!
04.01.2022 Merry Christmas from Libby and Matt!
04.01.2022 A simple solution, but probably won't take off :( As a balanced trainer, I most certainly use a lot of positive reinforcement! I know when certain training equipment is required and how to use it properly though!
03.01.2022 Just had a consult with a lady who had some problems with her 2 working dogs. She picked up the techniques I was teaching her very well, and accomplished a lot in a short space of time. It is a testament to what can be achieved when you keep an open mind! We still have a long way to go with these 2 wonderful dogs, as they were set in their ways for a long time. Though through stimulus control and appropriate counter conditioning, along with a redefined set of rules in the home, they will be the perfect companions!
01.01.2022 I'm sad to say that Balanced Dog Training will be closed indefinitely. I am making the move overseas to Europe and don't know when I'll be returning. It's been an absolute pleasure helping you and I'm glad I had the opportunity to change the relationship between you and your dogs. Have a great new year dog lovers!
