17.01.2022 Cairns Bonsai Society January Tips: 1. Shade bonsai in extremely hot weather. January weather can alternate between overcast and rainy days and hot sunny dry days with high UV. This can make it hard to regulate watering and the bright light can lead to burning of leaves. Providing light shade for bonsai at this time of year, either under 50 % shade screen or from nearby trees makes the care of bonsai much easier. 2. Water before fertilising in hot weather. Fertiliser is neede...d all through the rainy season when heavy downpours leach nutrients from the growing medium. Fertilising in hot dry weather adds the risk of root burn. This can be avoided by watering the bonsai well in advance and then by using dilute liquid fertiliser but more frequently. 3. Check drainage holes and tip shallow pots. In prolonged rainfall periods it is important to check that pots are draining feely so that roots are well aerated. Check drainage holes are not blocked by escaped roots. For those very shallow containers that drain poorly, tip the container with a chock at one end at a time to improve drainage. 4. Turn bonsai so they reach light on all sides. When bonsai are shaded by nearby buildings or trees, it is important to turn them periodically so they reach light, water and nutrients evenly on all sides.

13.01.2022 Cairns Bonsai Society June Tips: 1. Extra light. Place your bonsai so that they receive more light in the cool months. This will promote them to retain more leaves through cool weather and they will respond better following repotting in August-September. If you had put up temporary shade screening in the hot months, it is OK to take it down in the winter months, or place the trees out into more open areas where they receive more light. Turn bonsai regularly to received light ...on all sides. 2. Less fertilizer. Reduce the frequency and strength of liquid fertilizer in the cool months. Less fertilizer is used and lost when your bonsai is not growing actively and when you are watering less. Over fertilizing during cool months can accelerate the loss of older without gaining new growth and in extreme cases can sour the growing medium. Use the growth of your bonsai as a guide, if they are still growing actively, fertilizer but if they are dormant, wait. 3. Wiring. When growth rates are reduced in the cool months is a good time to wire bonsai and bend branches. Often there is less foliage on the tree and it is easier to see the branches, also, branches are thickening at a lower rate so the wire is less likely to cut in quickly. Note however, a branch does have to thicken for it to set in its new place! The old wood in the centre does not hold its new position well unless new wood in the desired position is made over the top of it. For best results use new straight wire that is well anchored in the pot of on another branch. Use of old, bent or kinked wire has limited strength and is liable to irregular scaring. 4. Start preparing growing media. Now is a good time to start sourcing and preparing growing media ready for repotting in August, September and October. Growing media works best if it has been screened. Fine dust particles clog the drainage of the mix and overly coarse particles take up too much space. A good growing medium has these removed using sieves. From late July onwards, keep an eye on the weather and the growth of your trees decide when it is best to repot. Repot to inclement weather conditions, not on a set regular date. Potting too early when it is too cold will starve trees of water and nutrient as they do produce new roots until temperatures start to warm. Repotting too late shortens the new growing season and runs the risk of having under established trees when heat waves start in the summer months.
