13.01.2022 Our concert schedule has really been been thrown off track this year due to COVID but we are committed to bringing the Cairns community beautiful musical performances! Our first performance of the year was such a success, even with limited seating because of restrictions, it sold out very quickly! We had a fantastic audience who joined us but unfortunately many people missed out on the concert. We since asked the Cairns community if they were interested in a second concert and we had an overwhelming response with huge demand! We are so pleased to announce that we are holding a second concert for Rhythm of Dance on the upcoming public holiday, 5th October! Tickets are $15 and can be purchased via our website https://www.cairnsconcertorchestra.org.au/upcoming-events

12.01.2022 Julian Thompson gives a riveting performance of Svante Henryson’s Black Run for solo cello. Speaking on the inspiration behind this recording, Julian says: I’d... talked with my wife Clara about exactly this; a highly infectious virus with an incubation period long enough for it to spread like wildfire. I’d even gone as far as talking with my brother Mick about bats being the likely origins of such a virus, mammals like us living as they do in large colonies, super colonies even, that act as hot houses of viral evolution. Not once did it cross my mind that a virus of this nature would leave the concert halls of the world empty and silent... So, we do what we can... More bluegrass I hear you say? Oh hells yeah! The title of this work, Black Run by Svante Henryson, always reminds me of a trip to the winter wonderland of Hokkaido, back when the ACO ran the Niseko Winter Music Festival. A group of us were out on the mountain, skiing with a much younger Leonardo Tognetti who, being a good skier even then, was focussed on finding the steepest black runs to attack. Having found such a pitch down he went. Our wonderful Aiko worried, I suspect, for Leo’s safety, turned down the steep slope to follow, completed one turn, froze and then straight lined it, literally at breakneck speed, down the mountain. We were all absolutely terrified. The sight of Aiko in full flight is still burnt onto my retina, legs bouncing, skis chattering, hurtling like a bullet down a brutal mogul run! Somehow, and I still don’t know how, Aiko held it all together and made it through unscathed, we found her a little rattled but laughing at the bottom. So Aiko... Suffice to say it’s a wild ride." Please consider supporting the ACO and our free digital season, ACO HomeCasts, with a tax-deductible donation: http://aco.com.au/donate

12.01.2022 #videooftheday Rose was forced to leave her 1850’s Beirut home due to the damage from the explosion. Instagram user, Sarah Barakatt captured this beautiful moment when one of the volunteers helping Rose move grabbed his violin and played for her. Take a look!
