20.01.2022 When the 2020 Pan Pacific Masters Games were cancelled in June, we gave our stakeholders and supporters an undertaking that we would evaluate the idea of a 2021... edition of the Pan Pacific Masters Games. That evaluation has been finalised. The evaluation has revealed stories of struggle and hardship from our stakeholders seriously impacted by COVID-19 and not having an event in 2020. Many of our sports partners who rely on the Pan Pacific Masters Games to provide economic benefits every two years are in dire financial situations due to the loss of the event in 2020. Many supporters and stakeholders are battling for survival, just like us. We understand the impacts on our supporters and stakeholders of a four year gap from the last Games in 2018 to the next scheduled Pan Pacific Masters Games in November 2022, would be significantly negative We understand the impacts of a 2021 Pan Pacific Masters Games on our supporters and stakeholders would be significantly positive We understand there would be competing impacts in 2021 from a New Zealand Masters Games in February, a Great Barrier Reef Masters Games in May, and a Perth based Australian Masters Games in October We understand some of our fellow Masters Games with whom we have enjoyed friendly and productive relationships over many years would prefer we did not have a 2021 Pan Pacific Masters Games We understand a 2021 Pan Pacific Masters Games would disappoint some participants who will be forced to make difficult choices in which Masters Games they support We understand personal circumstances and choices would force some participants to forgo a 2021 Pan Pacific Masters Games We understand our local and state government partners have a strong desire to support a 2021 event We understand our host sports organisations support a 2021 event to remain viable We understand that hosting a 2021 edition of the Asia Pacific's biggest and best Masters Games would not be universally supported, but would ensure its survival, rather than its extinction When faced with the reality of consequences revealed by the evaluation, our focus is to rebuild the event to offer a Pan Pacific Masters Games from Saturday 6 to Sunday 14 November 2021 and return as scheduled in November 2022. Further details including a draft sports program will be released as soon as they are available.

19.01.2022 WHY I PADDLE IN A DRAGON BOAT I paddle for the chance to live a few moments at the peak of my potential. I want to paddle with a group of dedicated dragon boat... paddlers, to compete against the best crews around and try to beat them. Everyone likes to win gold medals but we also do this to strengthen ourselves, push our own limits, and support each other. In a crew, speed and synchronization demands a total commitment of mind, body and teamwork found in no other sport. Each person on the crew must commit fully to the program in order to win. Success requires long hours of hard work and practice. With sufficient effort over a long enough period of time, progress is eventually made in tiny increments. It takes months of practice to prepare for a race that is over in a few minutes and sometimes decided by inches. Our crew practices together all year long and puts in a lot of extra hours of individual training. Competitive dragon boat racing isnt for everyone. This sport attracts people who naturally hardworking, positive, reliable, supportive, patient, and generous. I paddle for the opportunity to be involved with such a great group of people who are not only my team mates but are also my friends. Paddling with amazing people and winning is the greatest feeling in the world. Thats why I paddle. See more

16.01.2022 Tonight marks the end of an era. After 4 years as President of our club, Lorraine is handing over the reins. Thank you from all past and present members of Cairns DBC. Four eventful years has seen many many hours of negotiations, relocations, a new club house and grounds, grants and regattas. Including events held here in Cairns, such as the Great Barrier Reef Masters, and those that weve attended - NQ Phoenix and Spitfires events, Australian Nationals, QLD State titles, Pa...n Pacific Masters, Australian Masters, Bali Badung International Dragon Boat Festival, Shanghai Cultural exchange and the Northern California Dragon Boat Festival. We now have travel shirts and a decorated club paddle. We have cooked 1000s of sausages and attended many promotional events. Weve celebrated weddings, babies and lives lost. A number of our members are now officials and volunteers while more are currently in training to be steerers and coaches. The club memberships have more than doubled and been maintained during Covid ( and we now have a fully approved Covid-19 safety plan. All this accomplished during Lorraines Presidency. While this is all condensed into a brief overview, Lorraine had been instrumental in that growth of the club. She has spent endless time, at her own expense, making all this happen! For this we thank you! Now enjoy your time to paddle See more

11.01.2022 CHINESE 200M PHILOSOPHY Chinese professional teams are well-known for their 200m sprinting ability. Starting right from stroke one, they waste no time b...uilding up to a blisteringly-fast rate and hold it right till the finish line, seemingly never getting tired. So what is the secret? Well aside from a super high level of fitness... There are 4 key principles: 1 The start is the key to a 200m. Once youre behind after 50-100m, there is almost no chance of catching up unless your opponent messes up something. Check out our article on getting the perfect start on our website 2 Rather than build up to a maximum rate which they can barely hold onto and then transitioning, a lot of professional teams will build up to a maximum rate that they can just hold onto for the duration of the 200m, with no meaningful transition. No pushes, no strategic calls, no finishjust go. This means probably going at a pace slightly lower than what they could go for 50-100m. 3 The rate needs to be built with power and maintained by it the whole way through, not just by arm-flailing. This means trying to stay dynamic with lots of body movement. Yes technique will degrade somewhat but the goal is to degrade less than your opponents. 4 Paddlers focus on keeping all the work upfront, then getting out a bit earlier, so as to keep the recovery time to a minimum. This keeps the work done in the more efficient part of the stroke. All in all, the 200m is the simplest event in dragon boat. Because its so short, the teams anaerobic capability will ultimately be the primary deciding factor. That being said, at high rates, the teams ability to blend and work together is also challenged more than other events. There is barely any time to thinkevery paddler has to be dialed in. The team that paddles together more will have a huge advantage in the 200m over other events, where strategy and aerobic fitness play a much bigger role. Let us know what you think of the Chinese 200m philosophy down below Whats your teams approach to the 200m? 10.01.2022 While many Dragon Boats still remain empty during this difficult time and festivals have been cancelled, storing your boat properly is crucial to keep it in good... condition. Here are some tips... In order to maintain the best possible condition and quality of the boat in the long run, some basic users and maintenance rules should be observed and some simple but very useful tasks should be accomplished. MOVING THE BOATS: As the boats are extremely heavy and are of extraordinary size, special care is needed when moving them. Depending on the size, they should be moved by hand or on a special trailer. For lifting and moving a 20 seater, minimum 10-12 strong people are needed. For lifting and moving a 10 seater, minimum 8-10 strong people are needed. When lifting or putting the boats down special care is needed to ensure movers safety and avoid injuries that is why it is advisable to plan the moving procedure carefully in advance. Some boats have some specially developed handles inside, which should be used when moving them. The seats should not be used for this purpose (they can break) The movers should be allocated evenly at the front and back parts of the boat, as well as at both left and right sides. Lifting should be thoroughly coordinated. It should be performed carefully, observing the basic rules of lifting (slowly, carefully, with straight back and firm, stable grip). A special trailer can be used for moving, but it is important to bear in mind that the boat is 250 kg and it is extremely vulnerable, so it should be laid on the trailer carefully with the biggest possible surface. When using a trailer, supporting should be at the mass-centre of the boat. When using a trailer, make sure that the boat cannot fall from it or cannot lose balance and that the trailer does not cause any damage to it. STORAGE: Dragon boats are recommended to be stored in the following way: The boats have sandwich carbon fibre structure, which means that they should be protected from harmful weather effects (moisture, sun). Consequently, the best solution for storing the boats is to place them in an indoor and lockable boathouse. Even if there is no boathouse available, a covered place should be provided, which is protected from moisture and is not exposed to sunshine. Moisture, frost, too high temperature and UV rays can damage the structure of the boats. We recommend a boat cover with which the protection can be increased. The cover does not substitute the dry storage place. * It possible to store the boats with their bottom down on grass or carpet using minimum two supports at two points which are soft and flexible and align to the bottom of the boats. This way of storing is recommended temporarily only and on moisture free place. *Boats can be stored upside down only if two-point support is provided which is in the minimum of 2 meters from the front and the end part and, in addition, the support is high enough for the boat not to touch the ground. The way boats should NEVER be stored: a) they should not be stored bottom down on concrete, pebbly or any other hard surface. b) they should not be stored upside down if the distance between the front and the end part support is less than 2 meters. c) dragon boats should never be stored on their side. d) or on each other. STORAGE OF THE COMPONENTS: The components are vulnerable painted polished pieces so their storage should be carried out with special attention and care. on stable and even surface, next to each other, possibly on cardboard paper or carpet, make sure they do not overturn, make sure they do not block any hulls way. The head and the tail of the boat are sophisticated, carefully elaborated and polished and can be damaged during a race in case of collision. It is also possible that if tightened together, they can crash due to waves and both the boat and its components may get damaged. Drums get typically damaged by breaking the leather surface. It is vital to use carefully rounded and blunt drumsticks. It is not allowed to leave the leather surface wet for a long time, otherwise they get soft and more vulnerable. Special attention should be paid at storing the drums to make sure their leather surface and bottom are away from sharp objects and no sharp or pointed objects can be place on them. FIXING/ASSEMBLING COMPONENTS: a) Drums should be fastened to the dragon boat with rubber bands, b) The seat for the drummer can be fastened with a plastic screw to the boat (make sure not to over tighten it) c) The boat numbers can be fastened to the boat with a special device (a wedge.) d) It is advised to keep the tools and equipment for assembling the components in case a quick change is needed. e) The head and the tail should be installed from the top. FASTENING DRAGON BOATS ON WATER: a. Fastening to the jetty. The corners and the edges of the jetty should be covered with rubber. Boats should be fastened on river to the side or the end of the jetty. b. In case of stagnant water surface dragon boats can be tightened together. GENERAL LANDING RULES: Pads should be placed between boats at all times. Boats fastened together should have their front and back parts fixed tight 5 Boats should never be tightened together with a chain, soft rope can be used exclusively Boats should be fastened so far from each other that occasional waves, wind, currents could not crash or rub them to each other, to the jetty, to any other object or the shore. Keeping components intact and safe is also crucial. Components should always be dissembled and stored in a dry place carefully. Precautions: After each use boats should be wiped dry. Storing boats on water for a long time for days, weeks is not recommended, moisture, UV rays, waves might damage them. CHECK-UPS DURING THE DAY AND AT THE END: In order to keep the boats in good shape, they should be checked continuously. The occasional minor damage should always be fixed in order to avoid major one. Components, spare parts should be stored carefully. At the end of each day both quantitative and qualitative check should be carried out. a) screws to fasten drummer seat (amount 4 per boat) b) checking drummer seat c) start numbers (quantity, condition) d) edge covers (condition) e) drums (condition) f) drum fastening ropes, rubber bands (quantity, condition) g) heads (condition) h) tails (condition) i) condition of the boat hull checking steering position j) checking rudder. MAINTENANCE: BOAT HULL: After each use the plastic surface of boats should be wiped dry to avoid scale development. We recommend using Boat Shampoo, which is specially developed for plastic boat maintenance. This simple maintenance activity can be performed by anybody, special qualification is not needed, and just the instructions for the shampoo should be followed carefully. The boat hull should undergo treatment twice each season (in the middle and at the end). It can be best carried out using Polish and Wax product, which is also specially developed for plastic boats. Employing waxes is important to renew plastic surfaces with which they regain their original condition and at the same time long-term protection is provided. Without using them the boats life time can be significantly shorter. In case of any damage detected on the boat, it should be fixed by a specialist with no delay. As long as damage is not dealt with immediately and water gets into the sandwich structure of the boat causing permanent and irreversible damage in it (Thus the boat hull can get softer, the outer and inner surface of the sandwich structure can fall apart, the surface can get blistered and the weight of the boat can also increase significantly). WOOD GUNWALE: It is the most used component of the boat. During each paddling it is exposed to hits and wear and tear. It is vital and compulsory to check the condition of the gunwale. In order to be able to use the boat for a long time without any disappointment, this wooden surface should be carefully treated. It only means to repair with no delay any wear or crack on the lacquer surface of the gunwale. Fortunately, it does not need special expertise, it can be performed easily. If any damage appears on the gunwale: * it should be dried thoroughly, * the damage and its surroundings should be rubbed with sandpaper, * it should be wiped clean, dry and with no grease, * 3-4 layers of boat lacquer should be employed, * wait until it dries entirely, * check the surface for unevenness (if needed, fine sand paper can be used for polishing) If there is bigger damage or it has broken, an expert should be consulted. It is strictly forbidden to use the boat with damaged gunwale, as it may cause injury to the paddlers.

09.01.2022 ‘‘Tis the Season to go too far!’...... Yes... we all do it- overindulge in too much food, fizz and fun and end up feeling sluggish So, how to survive this fe...stive season without that feeling? Tips that may help..... 1. Choose your booze carefully... red wine is high in polyphenols provide micronutrients for gut bacteria, adding bitters to a cocktail or finishing a meal with a digestif liqueur will improve digestion. Swap out alcohol with kombucha or a sparkling water with lemon.... looks like a ‘ drink’ but is more beneficial! 2. COLD rice, pasta or potato salads increase resistant starch and great fuel source for gut bacteria. 3. Add walnuts to dishes such as salads, muffins or muesli as another fuel source for gut bacteria. 4. Be mindful when you eat... turn off the tv, look at your food before eating and see what’s before you. Chew slowly and savour each mouthful. You may find that you eat less and make healthier choices. 5. Hit the dance floor......exercise helps to reduce stress levels, keeps the digestion ‘moving’ and it’s fun! 6. Boost immunity with Vit C rich fruit, veggies and herbs to ward off colds and flu. 7.Up the fibre intake to rid waste products... LSA ( linseed, sunflower& almond ) sprinkled in salads and yogurt. Swap crisps and dips for nuts or olives. 8. Don’t stress if you do slip up... re-set and re-start the next day. Stressing activates the circulating hormones that cause weight gain. 9. Keep drinking water! Every bodily function requires water! 10. And finally....if indulgence has left you bloated and from too many roast potatoes, chocolates and figgy pudding then reach for... a) ginger or peppermint tea b) warm water with a good squeeze of lemon juice c) have a break from rich food and enjoy soups and smoothies for a day d) keep moving... lying or sitting for too long exacerbates indigestion. Wishing you all a healthy, happy and peaceful Christmas
