25.01.2022 It's hard to believe but good not to forget, that while we are able to enjoy Judo practice in Queensland, there are many clubs elsewhere in Australia that are not so fortunate due to Covid-19 restrictions. We had over 40 judoka practice over our 3 classes last night! Also very affirming to have such solid and supportive instructor support with 6 assisting during our 8-13 year olds class. Last night we were also very pleasantly surprised with a visit from Mr Norm Hill. Norm is... a former National level competitor/medalist, a former Oceania level referee, and a life member of Bushido Judo Club (Australian Judo's most successful ever competition Judo Club). Like many of us "elderly" judoka, Norm hides a wealth of Judo experience and expertise behind a little grey hair. Wonderful to share some mat time with Mr Norm in a spirit of Judo Sincerity, Friendship and Respect. See more

21.01.2022 State of Origin footy tonight!! (and next Wednesday as well). Tonight's third class (7:30 to 8:45pm) is cancelled and will instead be rolled into a common class from 6:15 - 7:15pm. It worked out really well last week (for Game One) so we'll do it again tonight (for Game Two) and also for next Wednesday (for Game Three).

20.01.2022 Australia's most senior Judoka: Many practicing Judo in Australia may not realise or fully appreciate the Judo achievements of Mr Ivan Zavetchanos (9th Dan), CE...O of the Australian Kodokan Judo Association Association. Following are extracts from the article Sensei Ivan Zavetchanos The Spirit of Traditional Judo in Australia published by Dennis Bexis on April 11, 2008. he became co-founder of the Judo Federation of Australia (J.F.A.) in 1951, and obtained membership with the Australian Olympic Committee in 1952 1952 also saw the J.F.A. become one of the founding members of the International Judo Federation after becoming the Australian Open Champion in 1954 & 1955, he went on to organize the first Australian Judo Championships by weight categories in 1956, and introduced women’s competition at the same time became President of the J.F.A from 1958 to 1969 also became President of the O.J.U (Oceanic Judo Union) from 1958 to 1979 Vice-President of the I.J.F. between 1958-1979 Official Australian Olympic team coach in Tokyo, 1964 Official jury member at the 3rd (1961), 4th (1965), 5th (1967), 6th (1969), 7th (1971), 8th (1973), 9th (1975) and 10th (1979) World Judo Championships. I.J.F. judo technical delegate to Munich Olympic Organising Committee in 1972 Jury member at the 1976 Judo Events Montreal Olympic Games Kodokan graded to 2nd Dan in 1962, 3rd Dan in 1964, 4th Dan in 1968 and 5th Dan in 1975 Elected as a Life Member of the IJF (International Judo Federation) at the 1979 IJF Congress manager of the Australian Women’s Judo team to first Women’s World Judo Championships, New York, 1980 In 1981, Ivan founded the Australian Kodokan Judo Association.

16.01.2022 Don't forget..... Saturday's class starts at 9am for EVERYONE. Then at 10:15, adolescents and seniors are free to stay for another 45 minutes extended training/technique. The training for adolescents and seniors who wish to stay on for extra training, will not be conducted as a separate stand alone class. We are returning to what made Saturday training enjoyable years ago... a club class for everyone!

16.01.2022 Third, Final and Deciding game of State of Origin footy tonight!! There will be no third class tonight (7:30 to 8:45pm) and instead there will be a common class from 6:15 - 7:15pm for our over 8 year olds through to our more "mature aged" older gentlemen. :) Looking forward to a big and enjoyable night of both Judo and State of Origin footy!

13.01.2022 Welcome to Term 4 Judo! Judo starts back tonight, co-inciding with the start of School Term 4. 5-8yr olds from 5:00 - 6:00pm. 8-13 yr olds from 6:15pm-7:15pm. And older adolescents/Seniors from 7:30-8:45pm. Unfortunately, while we might have had a holiday, Covid 19 and associated restrictions have not. Therefore all remains the same in terms of the necessity for our club, it's members, and our parents/spectators to continue with Covid 19 management requirements. Touch foot...ball will also be training so as a reminder, by request from Touch football, we will need to park outside the Alley Park grounds as the gate will be shut. Touch football (like our Cairns Southside Judo Club) needs to maintain a Covid 19 registrar of all their attendants and the only way for them to do that is have all their members enter through the one gate (over near the grandstand). If the gate is open for our members, then touch football spectators will likely use the same gate and that throws a "spanner in the works" for their management in accordance with Covid 19 requirements. Please park outside the grounds and enter by foot (as per our practice prior to the School Holiday break). See more

13.01.2022 What a lovely way to say "I'm so happy to return to training" from one of our young long term students last Saturday. Thank you Kaili! #GrassrootsJudo

12.01.2022 During these tough Covid-19 times, Judo and our Cairns Southside Judo Club received some exposure within this months "Mulgrave Matters"! Page 2 mentions the hosting of the Australian Kodokan Judo Associations national championships last year at the Gordonvale State High School. And Page 8 mentions our Club President (Karen) and Head Coach (Luke) recently receiving a community service award from the Hon. Curtis Pitt Member for Mulgrave.

11.01.2022 The mats got a workout today! :) Hein and Mitsu did a fantastic job with their demonstration of the Nage-No-Kata!

09.01.2022 Yes there are mistakes in these techniques. And no, they are not perfect demonstrations of the techniques. But that is the nature of learning, and of the nature of grassroots practice in any art. Many of the techniques in this third set of the Gokyo are difficult to demonstrate in a way that separates the techniques from similar throws in the other four sets of the Gokyo. While not perfect demonstrations of each throw, we never-the-less think our boys and girls have done a fantastic job with these 8 techniques as they continue the long path of learning Judo. There are no short cuts to competency! https://youtu.be/RhbmJ9s9_N0

08.01.2022 Just doing our thing.... :)

05.01.2022 They said no earrings or bracelets on the judo mat. No one said anything about tiaras. :)

03.01.2022 Thank you to all our members (and parents) who support our club oriented approach to Judo as a community based recreational activity. https://youtu.be/3nIfHcNK8Zw

02.01.2022 Safe, Supportive, Inclusive and Enjoyable... At these Covid-19 times, our club is just very happy and fortunate to do what we all love.... to do Judo. While there may be restrictions of practice outside of our dojo, .and restrictions for what occurs off the training area (eg spectator physical distancing), we are very fortunate to be able to train as normal. Last night in our grassroots oriented 2nd class (for 8-13 year old children), we had 5 assistant instructors in addition to Luke Sensei. Lots of learning opportunities!
