20.01.2022 Why wouldn’t you be a Surf Lifesaver in North Queensland? Surf Life Saving was founded in Sydney back in 1907 but the first club wasn’t established in Cairns until the 1920s. Members from local swim clubs began voluntary beach patrols and the Cairns Surf Life Saving Club was soon official. In the 1960s, when this photo was taken, club members used to travel in an open truck from their clubhouse, in town, out the beaches for a day’s patrol. 16.01.2022 ‘Safe in the Water’ The purpose of Surf Life Saving is to keep us all safe in the water, regardless of our abilities or the local conditions. Here in North Queensland, that included keeping swimmers safe from deadly jellyfish stings. 09.01.2022 Who wants to be a Lifesaver? The bronzed Aussie lifesaver is one of this country’s most recognisable icons. Strong, fit and tanned, the Lifesaver was also, for many years, exclusively male. It’s a forgotten history that women were active in the early years of Surf Lifesaving but attitudes to women’s participation changed after World War II. From the 1950s, women were prohibited from trialling for the surf Bronze Medallion, which was a prerequisite for patrol. ... In 1980, Surf Life Saving voted to lift all restrictions on women members. Today in North Queensland, 45% of club members are women. 02.01.2022 Wait! What are they wearing? Yes those Surf Lifesavers are wearing pantyhose. Strange as it may seem, in 1981 Surf Life Saving Queensland mandated the wearing of pantyhose for all patrols and Surf Life Saving competition in North Queensland.... At the time, our Surf Life Saving patrol seasons ran from November to May, in order to stay in line with the summer patrol seasons in southern states. For lifesavers in the north, that meant swimming during the wet season, when marine stingers were most active. Local GP Dr Jack Barnes identified pantyhose as the most effective barrier to marine stings. Surf Life Saving Queensland agreed and pantyhose it was! Women from all over Australia sent them to Cairns and they were shared amongst the clubs. Apparently pregnancy hose were much prized for their durability!
