16.01.2022 Did you know? Sometimes fish in the city need ladders. Sounds strange, but it’s true. We thought World Fish Migration Day, which is today, was the perfect time to show you how the Swallow Street Fish Ladder in Mooroobool is working.... Development, road-building and urbanisation can create a barrier to fish movement. The fishway ladder was built late last year to help fish and crabs get where they need to go for breeding and migration. The purpose of the fishway is to slow the velocity of water, by a series of stepped 300mm deep pools, allowing fish to move up and through the constructed barrier. The barrier in this case being culverts. The fishway allows fish to swim through the culverts during the variable flows at this location. So far, the fishway has been well-used for migration and breeding by mullet, bream, crabs, gobies and gudgeons.

12.01.2022 Do you have a plan if a disaster strikes?
12.01.2022 This NAIDOC week, we’ve been reflecting on the 2020 theme ‘Always Way, Always Will Be’. Staff and visitors have added their reflections to a ‘Wall of Hands’ on display at the Spence Street council chambers. Some share a simple message ‘Common Ground’ or ‘Deadly’, others touch on the complexities of race and history in Australia.... Cairns Young Citizen of the Year Daniel Rosendale shared his thoughts, as a proud Kuku Yalanji and Gugu Yimithir man, with Councillors and community this week where a special Welcome to Country and song began the Committee meetings. We as a nation must properly acknowledge our past to ensure we can move into the future stronger and together, he said. Always Was, Always Will Be what are your reflections on this year’s theme?

11.01.2022 We’ve noticed some frustration at traffic light pedestrian crossings lately. The red man symbol has just started flashing. What do you do? There are two correct answers WAIT or WALK depending on where you are.... People who began crossing when the symbol was green. They WALK. People who have not yet begun crossing. They WAIT. Drivers with a person crossing in front of them. They WAIT. It’s a common misconception that pedestrians must get all the way across a road while the green walk signal is on. The GREEN walk signal tells you when to start crossing the road. The flashing RED signal tells you that you should complete the crossing. There is a third correct answer for everyone on this question be patient. Getting around is far nicer when everyone is a little more patient.

Cairns has the biggest urban tree canopy of any city in Australia and we’re calling for your help to map it - one tree at a time. So far, we’ve plotted more than 30,000 trees. But with more than half a million trees on our streets and parks, there’s a big job ahead. ... Check out your favourite picnic or climbing tree using TreePlotter. Learn its species name. Find out information like which birds have been seen nesting there. If your favourite tree is not marked, you can add it to the map yourself. Backyard botanists will need to log in to map a tree. Find more information, how-to guides or log into the database. https://bit.ly/2JCUwvQ

04.01.2022 Singing a rainbow with Pride Check out the rainbow crossing we’ve installed on the Esplanade, near the Aplin Street intersection, to support Cairns Pride Festival. The rainbow crossing will be a focal point for a celebration of diversity and inclusion of LGBTI Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities in the tropical far north for the next three weeks.... This year, black and ochre-coloured bars have been added to represent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander members of the LGBTI community. No pot of gold has yet appeared at the end of the rainbow, but local performers Rhianna Mation, Dealia Cards and Leonardo Da Inci brought their own touches of glitter and gold to the occasion. They were joined on the rainbow crossing by Division 5 Councillor, Amy Eden, and Ben Dawson from Queensland Council for LGBTI Health. 03.01.2022 A huge thank you to the 300 volunteers that helped out at our Great Northern Clean Up sites throughout September. Across the 15 Council-coordinated clean-up sites 11,950 litres of litter were collected. That's equivalent to 50 wheelie bins. When you add in the hard waste that was also collected, it’s more than a tonne of litter and waste removed from our parks and waterways.... This year, the Yiirgangydji Land and Sea Rangers also conducted a clean-up for Council at Saltwater Creek in Parramatta Park, fishing out more than 2500 individual pieces of litter. The retrieved items included 288 drink bottles, 151 aluminium cans, 63 wine bladders, and more than 500 plastic wrappers.
