17.01.2022 When you think of a car, is an Audi the same as a Hyundai? Well, basically, they are both cars - There are some basic features such as headlights, indicators th...at function the same right but that's about where it ends right? Cakes are like cars, the higher quality more custom original cakes are your more expensive car. Same with size, you can't buy a 7 or 8 seater for the same price as 5. So when you convert this to cake, some things take longer, use more of and are more difficult with size - You can't expect a 7 seater on a 4 seater budget. When you talk of one or 2 tiers, yes 2 tiers is more expensive, there's an extra board, dowels and extra ganache and fondant, same with a cake to feed 20 or 50...very different size means more ingredients. These things are expensive. And no one can afford an Audi if they are only making $1.60 per hour. Yet I know so many sugar artists/cake decorators who make cake for a living and are supposed to live on this income AND pay for expenses such as electricity and ingredients. People often expect value for money and I totally get that everyone has a budget, but you can't expect that a cake decorator will spend between 6-20 hours working on a cake to make $80 because that's all you're willing to pay, and I'm sure you wouldn't ask the same of a plumber if you had sewerage overflowing!! I don't know many people who would be willing to go to work outside the home for 1 hour and get paid that or less. So when you are thinking cake on a budget, if you're only willing to pay a particular amount, it might be worthwhile looking at options in that budget, rather than trying to get your Audi with the same value. Even the cheesecake shop averages $70 - $80 if you want a few minor decorations. Or better yet, try making it yourself to see how time consuming and expensive it really is! See more
