23.01.2022 NEWS FLASH! We’re working hard to help bring this excellent program to Bathurst in late November. Local high school students will hear from Paul Stanley, from the Matthew Stanley Foundation, wheelchair racer Matt Speakman, and the accomplished Warren Luff, who racked up yet another top-3 finish at the recent Bathurst 1000. Best of all, thanks to the support of sponsors including Porsche Motorsport Australia, theres no cost to the students and schools to participate. It’s free...! Stay tuned for updates. 21.01.2022 SCHOOL ZONES: It isn’t just our speed we should be watching when driving near schools. Illegal parking can create dangerous situations too. Remember, kids will be unpredictable. The very young ones in particular simply don’t have the cognitive ability to judge vehicle speed, recognise danger, or remember every rule their teachers and family try to instil in them.
20.01.2022 EMERGENCY VEHICLES: It can be a real eye-opener the first time novice drivers encounter an emergency vehicle under lights and sirens! We would add one more thing to the advice provided by NSW Police Force - once you’ve spotted the emergency vehicle and are comfortable you’re out of their way, activate your Hazard Lights. This lets the driver of the emergency vehicle know that you’ve seen them and won’t be doing anything crazy as they pass you.
20.01.2022 MOUNT LAMBIE: Serious crash causing significant delays on the highway. Avoid the area or delay travel.
19.01.2022 Highway Closures: Snow and ice have forced the closure of the Great Western Highway between Walang and Tunnel Hill (Mudgee Road turn-off). Don’t ever drive on a road that’s been officially closed - if you have a problem, your insurance company may withhold your claim. As always, check Live Traffic NSW for updates.
18.01.2022 SEVERE THUNDERSTORM / HAIL WARNING: We’re being warned about some very adverse weather conditions expected across the region this afternoon. Delay any unnecessary travel. If you must be out on the roads, leave plenty of space between you and the vehicle in front, turn your headlights on, and try to avoid areas of the road covered by standing water. If you must drive through pooled water, reduce your speed and lightly set up your brakes once clear of the water. This will help to dry your brake discs and pads, which in turn improves braking performance.
17.01.2022 A bit of fun for the Bathurst 1000... We’re really privileged here at CARS to have worked with many of the drivers featuring in today’s race. Since 2013, Instructors Ian, Adrian and myself have been a part of the 12 Hour pit crews for the likes of Craig Lowndes, Shane Van Gisbergen, Scott McLaughlin, Alex Davison, Tim Slade, Warren Luff, and Chris Pither. All of these guys will be in action at Mount Panorama today, so understandably our loyalties will be torn! If you’re watch...ing the race telecast, have your Bingo sheet handy and mark off the appropriate squares every time the commentators mention these cliches! Cheers, Matt
16.01.2022 KELSO: Serious crash on the highway. Avoid the area.
15.01.2022 BLUE MOUNTAINS: In an effort to reduce traffic congestion between Hartley and Blackheath on Sunday afternoons, Transport for NSW will be monitoring Victoria Pass. Traffic controllers based at the foot of Mount Victoria will be stopping Eastbound traffic if queues develop back to the top of the Pass. It’s early days, so let’s all wait and see if this approach assists in reducing a problem that has existed for many years.
14.01.2022 This very handy little booklet is essential reading for anyone preparing for the NSW Driving Test. Hard copies are becoming harder and harder to source, so save this link to a PDF version, and download it from the Transport for NSW / RMS Website. https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au//lice/guide-to-driving-test.pdf
14.01.2022 SNOW: As expected, snow has closed a number of major roads across the region. Follow Live Traffic NSW and Chifley Police District for updates.
11.01.2022 Two crashes causing significant delays this morning - At Cullen Bullen and Meadow Flat.
10.01.2022 WEATHER WARNING: Roads to Orange and Blayney blocked by fallen trees:
10.01.2022 Well, it’s a sad fact that vehicles equipped with a good old manual ‘box are getting harder and harder to find these days... We’ll give him points for trying.
04.01.2022 SENIORS: Some good news for our older drivers, with new procedures introduced to simplify medical reporting required for licensing. In the past few years, we’ve had to step in and assist a number of older drivers rectify errors made by a medical professional when competing various forms. One tick in the wrong box, one field left blank, an incorrect section on the form filled in, or assumptions made in relation to licence restrictions - it doesn’t take much to get it wrong, bu...t it creates a mountain of work requiring significant expertise and effort to correct things. As the only authorised RMS Older Driver Assessor in the NSW Central West, I (Matthew) can reassess senior drivers and renew your unrestricted licence for 2 years. Give us a call on 0455 77 2797 or 6337 2797 if you’d like more information.
04.01.2022 Tomorrow’s the day! Hundreds of local Year 11 students will be hearing from the No Second Chance team. So great to be able to bring a program like this to town, in a year where so many things had to be cancelled. Big shout out to McElrea Racing, the Matthew Stanley Foundation, Warren Luff and the main man, Andy McElrea.
02.01.2022 Here at Calare Academy of Road Safety we offer a wide range of services to drivers of all ages and stages. One area we take great pride in is the work we do with Occupational Therapists, to get people back on the road after life-changing injuries, illness or trauma. We have two specially-engineered vehicles fitted with a variety of modified controls. This means residents of the NSW Central West no longer need to travel to Sydney to access such specialised equipment. Our team ...have been trained by the Institute of Driver Health, under the guidance and supervision of Dr Beth Cheal, PhD. Dr Cheal is Australia’s pre-eminent authority on Driver Rehabilitation. Locally, we work alongside several OT’s, including Elissa Clark from Road to Rehab. Elissa has just launched her new website - so click on through, and you might see some familiar faces!
01.01.2022 A nice little promo from our friends at VERTO for the upcoming #bathurst1000
01.01.2022 STORMS: We are likely to experience some adverse weather in the coming days. Keep an eye on the forecasts, check your tyres (tread and pressure), and your wiper blades, and make sure all lights on your vehicle are working properly.
01.01.2022 ACCESSIBLE PARKING: This rider caused a bit of a storm by parking in the painted-out area between two accessible parking bays at a Melbourne Bunnings. Remember, these painted areas allow side-loading ramps to be safely deployed, so wheelchair users can access their vehicles. The side-entry design is gaining popularity, as it doesn’t expose wheelchair users to traffic passing behind the vehicle, which is obviously an issue with rear-access ramps extending some distance from the back of the vehicle.
01.01.2022 ORANGE NORTHERN DISTRIBUTOR ROAD: Is there a worse intersection in Western NSW than the unmitigated disaster located adjacent to McDonalds at North Orange? There’s no way to re-engineer this debacle, so Orange City Council would be best served to level the entire mess with a bulldozer and start again. Oh, and never - EVER - allow the civil engineers who designed and approved this chaotic disarrangement near a road project again.
01.01.2022 Speed Camera Changes: An interesting development in NSW, given that governments of both persuasions have always resisted ‘hidden’ or covert enforcement. It’s worth noting that Queensland and Victoria, as our two primary border neighbours, have had unmarked cameras for many years. Watch this space!
01.01.2022 COMMUNITY: Something we try to do here at Calare Academy of Road Safety is ‘pay it forward’. Well, for the past 5 years I’ve been a voluntary board member here at Bathurst Community Transport, serving in roles such as Treasurer, Vice President and, for the past couple of years, as President and Chairman. You won’t have read much about my role, because the real rock stars are the amazing team of staff and volunteer drivers, and our incredibly generous sponsors who enable us to... deliver our mission: Getting transport-disadvantaged people to where they need to go; want to go; or dream to go. Reliance Bank 2bs 95.1 FM 99.3 B-Rock Western Advocate Next time you see one of our cars, give them a big ‘thumbs up!’ Cheers, Matt
