25.01.2022 Indigenous Learning Garden On Wednesday, we all had a wonderful day creating our Indigenous Learning Garden. It was so great to see every student work together to make this amazing space. Thank you to all the amazing helpers from Newcrest Cadia Valley, who worked hard to create our vision. Also, a thank you to Nikki Bennetts from Forestry Corporation who donated numerous plants and educational material for students. Well done to our Junior AECG team who showed great leadership throughout the day. What a splendid start to Term 4! Aboriginal Education Committee
24.01.2022 Today we had the privilege of working with students and teachers from Calare Public School, Orange NSW DEC to establish an Indigenous Garden at the school. Thro...ugh our 'Schoolyard Blitz' around 30 of our employees volunteered to bring the garden to life. The garden was designed by students in consultation with local Indigenous groups and includes a yarning circle, paths, bush tucker garden and native garden areas in the shape of a platypus. The garden will be an area for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students to connect meaningfully to culture and the land. Special thanks to Pigot's Midwestern Mini Mix for donating concrete, mulch and crushed granite for the garden. #schoolyardblitz

21.01.2022 Class of the Week - 2 Red 2 Red have been very busy spreading kindness around our great school by participating in a Kindness Challenge. We have all been doing random acts of kindness to help promote our new school values - being ‘Respectful’, being ‘Considerate’ and ‘Honouring Others’. We have been researching Australian animals and will be using this information to write our very own information reports. We are also learning about different places in Australia and have ev...en linked up with a school on the Central Coast and have written Pen Pal letters to compare our towns. In maths, we are becoming experts in using a variety of strategies to add and subtract two-digit numbers. I wonder if you can recognise which Australian animal we have replicated in our Pete Cromer inspired artworks? Mrs Brown | Classroom Teacher

19.01.2022 Class of the Week - 2 Green We have been learning about Australia, the world and the seven continents. In groups we researched the continents and found out lots of interesting facts. Did you know that over 741 million people live in Europe and that there are 54 countries in Africa? We are beginning to write information reports. What is a fact? What is our opinion? and being able to tell the difference in our writing. We have written information reports on whales, pelicans a...nd the Great Australian Bight. We have also been working on strengthening our understanding of the Calare Values. We are developing our skills in being considerate and respectful in all areas of the school and honouring our classmates and peers. Mrs Cotter | Classroom Teacher

18.01.2022 Band Organisation Update COVID Due to the recent Covid-19 updates from the Department of Education band will have a new format. This will see a benefit to our band program as we move into an individual or very small tutorial groups working in a large space such as the hall. We have been able to structure the new timetable so that the students in the kitchen/garden program don’t miss out. As there are a higher number of sessions to accommodate the more individualized instruc...tion, it is very important that the students arrive on time for their session. We would also like to emphasise the importance of encouraging the students to play at home so as to maximize the gains that can be made with more personalized tuition. Under the DET guidelines, drum and keyboard groups are able to operate as normal. We are still planning to be able to play as a band at the end of the year and are arranging to do some ZOOM recordings (virtual concerts). Thank you for your ongoing support. Mrs Maxine Thompson and Mrs Chris Mickle | Band

17.01.2022 Class of the Week - 5 Blue Just another busy week in 5 Blue. Students in Year 5 have been doing some online check-up assessments this week and I couldn’t be prouder of how carefully 5 Blue worked. We have also been working hard during our literacy rotations to work on our spelling strategies, improve our comprehension skills and develop creative BTN reports. In Science, 5 Blue have been studying Space and have spent a few art sessions putting their artistic talents to work on amazingly detailed night sky drawings. It can get a little chilly during the winter months, however, sometimes we get a relaxing reading break by the heater to warm up. How lucky I am to be able to share my days with such a fabulous group of young learners. Mrs Jones | Classroom teacher
14.01.2022 Book Week 2020 It was amazing to see so many ‘curious creatures and wild mind’ costumes throughout the school last week. 14.01.2022 Class of the Week - 1 Blue How would you protect your house from the Big Bad Wolf? That's just one of the questions we've been answering this week in our Fairy Tale literacy unit. The kid's ideas were amazingly varied: electronic fences, sticky glue roof tiles, lava pits, TNT, beehives on the chimney and something wonderfully scary called a "Piranha Drone"! This week we were looking at the story of 'The Three Little Pigs' and using adjectives to describe the different characters and their traits. Beautiful sunshine meant that the kids were able to get out and play in our wonderful playground. They love our morning exercise break where we get to climb and play on the different equipment and the nature garden. Mrs Rees | Classroom Teacher

13.01.2022 Class of the Week - 5/6 Pink Did you know that a thin layer of blubber placed around our hands meant that our hand could tolerate freezing cold water for 2-5 times longer than without any blubber? Some polar animals have blubber up to 50cm thick around their bodies. 5/6 Pink has been studying Animal Adaptations this week, looking in particular at the animals of Antarctica and the tundra regions. We observed how blubber can work to protect animals from the cold through fun an...d messy science experiment. We have been writing and publishing informative texts on polar animals, being sure to Ban the Boring. We also completed artworks that demonstrate food chains in Antarctica, discussing how animals within an ecosystem depend on each other for survival. Mrs Allen and Mrs Thorne | Classroom Teachers
