11.01.2022 ANHIDROSIS - WHAT IS IT AND WHY SHOULD HORSE OWNERS CARE? Summer is just around the corner, and we have been experiencing above normal temperatures this spring. It is important that you remember horses cool their body temperatures by sweating. However, did you know that there is a condition where their ability to sweat is greatly diminished or completely gone. This condition is called ANHIDROSIS. How do horses develop Anhidrosis?... Onset of anhidrosis can occur suddenly after a horse has had a period of profuse sweating, or it can develop gradually over time. These horses can develop a COMPLETE or PARTIAL loss of the ability to sweat. In either case, these horses develop a HIGH TEMPERATURE and RAPID BREATHING. Interestingly, some studies have shown that affected horses have HAIR LOSS and a DULL COAT as well as DEPRESSION, DECREASED APPETITE, and DECREASED WATER INTAKE. It is believed the condition develops due to OVERSTIMULATION OF THE SWEAT GLANDS that are stimulated by adrenalin IN A HOT AND HUMID CLIMATE. The sweat glands are exposed to a high concentration of adrenalin and after a period of time become insensitive to it. Is Anhidrosis a Permanent Condition? Anhidrosis can USUALLY BE REVERSED BY RESTING THE HORSE IN A COOLER AND LESS HUMID CLIMATE. Lots of horses with anhidrosis require MEDICAL TREATMENT and certainly MUST BE WORKED LESS because horses that do not sweat can become quite sick and can even die. Thoroughbreds and warmbloods are the most common breeds affected, however any horse can develop the condition. It also mostly occurs in horses in training. Furthermore, IT OCCURS MORE COMMONLY IN HORSES THAT ARE TRANSPORTED INTO HOT AND HUMID AREAS compared to horses native to these areas. What factors predispose horses to developing anhidrosis other than hot and humid environments? High protein feeds, disease, and exercise tend to increase the chances of a horse becoming anhidrotic. So if your horse begins BREATHING HARD IN THE ABSENCE OF DEVELOPING A SWEAT (even at rest) and has a high temperature; always consider infection is a possibility, but anhidrosis could be occurring.

07.01.2022 We have had multiple cases of rat bait poisoning over the last few weeks. If you are concerned (at all) that your pet may have eaten rat bait (even if your are sure it is safe in containers), or a rodent that has died from rat bait, please give us a call. There is a simple blood clotting test we can perform to assess whether your pet has been affected (we have the results within minutes). If you catch your pet eating bait or bait affected rodents and act quickly we can either make your pet vomit, so they do not absorb the chemical, or your pet may be able to go home on medication without a hospital stay.

05.01.2022 Boarding your Dog Going on holidays should be one of the most exciting times, however leaving your loved furry friend with someone you don't know can be a daunting task Different facilities have different prerequisites for boarding and talking to them is the easiest way to establish what is required, always remember you can go have a look at the facility before boarding your pet ... Pet's vaccination status must be up to date, with reputable kennels requiring written proof from your veterinarian If the facility does not require any vaccination requirements then this could indicate an inappropriate standard of care to your pet It is also ideal to have your flea & worming treatments up to date as well Things to consider for your pet!!! - Is the facility clean? How often will your pets enclosure be cleaned? Where will your pet be housed whilst cleaning is being completed? - Are the pets that are currently boarding relaxed and comfortable? Is there adequate shelter for them day & Night? Will they be supplied with appropriate bedding (raised bed, elevated off the cement floor)? -How often will your pet be fed & Exercised? What will they be fed? Where will they be exercised and for how long? Will they be exercised alone? (You want to ensure your pet is not being put in a position with potentially aggressive dogs that are not well socialized or unfamiliar with!!!) What happens if your pet becomes sick or gets injured? When do they contact you if your pet is unwell? When do they contact the veterinarian? Are all other boarders vaccinated? Do the boarding team members have a genuine interest in pet care? Will they be able to administer medication if required? Did they ask about your pet's particular needs or behavior so their team can make them feel as comfortable as possible?

03.01.2022 We can do this if we stick together. Another busy week coming up in the clinic & out on the road. If you require your pets & animals to be attended to please remember to ring ahead where possible. Our office is also contactable on 4992 1814 including after hours.

02.01.2022 Show is you pics. Have a great Friday folks.
