25.01.2022 Ohhh breastfeeding twins, holding hands - oxytocin rush right there!!! ‘Here is a cool twin tidbit: Twins get a head start on bonding than the rest of us. Re...searchers from University of Padova in Italy recently studied 3D ultrasound videos of five sets of twins in the womb. . When the fetuses were just 14 weeks old, the researchers noticed that the pairs seemed to be reaching out for each other, touching head to head and arm to head. At 18 weeks, they were stroking each other more often and were in physical contact about 30 percent of the time. . Even more phenomenal, the fetuses seemed to be extra gentle when touching around their siblings’ eyes (likely because this area is so delicate, the researchers posit). Previous research has noted that twins appear to interact socially with each other just hours after birth and the University of Padova researchers believe they may just be wired to do so’(words @seedlyfe) My mother is an identical twin and watching her and her sister in their 'twinness' has always been fascinating. x lael #breastfeeding #twins #sweetness @milkymommas #aboutbirthonline @aboutbirth #onlinebirtheducation #onlinebirthclasses #positivebirth #babies See more

23.01.2022 ‘It truly was the most epic and challenging day of my life, I’ve never felt more proud of my body and the way it nurtured and then birthed my beautiful son. I wish I could do it all again! Calmbirth made us both feel so empowered and in control, Alex especially felt confident in the ways he could help get me through. 23.01.2022 T R U S T Second time Mum Sarah smashing her birth! Hey Jess! ... Just wanted to let you know that our little boy Hendrix arrived yesterday, I was 5 days over due and started getting pains at 4am which were quite mild but headed to the hospital at 7 when they were 3 minutes apart, The midwife checked me and said I was only 3cm and I could go home but I was contracting pretty quickly and felt I wanted to stay. She gave me a birthing room and said you can hop in the shower. I Laboured in the shower for about an hour and a half and then asked for gas, about 30 minutes later I asked to get into the bath and by that stage I was in transition. He was born not long after that so I had the water birth I wanted and only ended up with a graze and that's it! I was home within 4 hours. Honestly the information you gave me helped me so much to get through those intense contractions, I trusted my body this time and instead of fighting it I used calm breathing techniques and positions. What a difference between both of my children's births, thank you #calmbirth #calmbirthwithjessica #wmpoweringbirth #birth #waterbirth #birthwithoutfear

21.01.2022 Founder of ‘Strong Mamas’ Health and Fitness, Rachel Giampietro, proved just how strong and capable her body , mind and support network was to help her birth her baby, Bella Jayne, at home in a calm water birth using all the Calmbirth techniques of breathing, visualisation and focusing on birthing her baby the way she wanted. I couldn’t have visualised a better birth or a better way to bring my beautiful girl into the world. The love and energy in the room and in my heart t...he whole time was just out of this world. I could cry tears of happiness thinking of how blessed I am to have her and to have the support team I had. Every single person in that room helped me be able to have this birth as what I can only describe as a dream birth. I felt incredibly empowered, beautiful and strong the whole time. I only hope and dream all women birthing all over the world get to feel what I felt. A mother will birth best where she feels safe is the BEST thing I learnt from Calmbirth and it is SO true. Home is certainly a place where I feel safe so a homebirth was perfect for me and it can be for you too if you feel safe, believe in yourself and have the right people around you! 21.01.2022 M.I.A I just wanted to pop on and say I am so sorry I have been MIA on here! As I soak up my last weeks with my first little one and enjoy the calm before the storm of another baby, my attention to posting has been rather slack!... Who is on this ride with me? How far are you and how are you feeling about your birth? For me? I honestly cannot wait. Birth - what a transformative, challenging and downright beautiful thing to experience as a women! This photo gave me heart eyes and makes me rather excited! @melissajeanbabies #calmbirth #calmbirthwithjessica #birth #baby #newborn

19.01.2022 Each journey of birth is different but the themes should all remain the same.. prepared, supported, respected and empowered! Congratulations again Amanda and Nick on the arrival of Nathaniel John Hi Jess, Just wanted to let you know that our little boy arrived on Sunday night. We really wanted to thank you for the preparation you provided us through the calmbirth course. ... Our birth journey was a bit like the labyrinth you showed us, not the most direct path but we got there in the end. My labour stopped and started for a number of days, had to have my waters broken, induced and vacuum delivery. Despite all of this we felt well prepared mentally, felt a part of all decisions and were able to stay in a really good headspace throughout. I felt so supported by Nick who was able to use alot of the strategies you taught us. In the end we felt that we really did have a calm birth and bub remained calm and well throughout. After this experience I am so in awe of the power of a woman's body and even more so the power of our mindsets. Thanks so much again and I wish you all the best for your pregnancy and birth. 17.01.2022 T E A M W O R K A massive congratulations to Cassandra and James on the birth of sweet little Eden! Jess! I needed a little time with my thoughts to get it all down. Just quickly, I didn’t have the calmest of births but thankfully because of Calmbirth, I had the right people in my space supporting me and I had the frame of mind that whatever happens is what my baby needs to be born. ... I laboured for 12hrs. Gas, a dose of morphine and bath for pain. In the end I needed a vacuum but my doctor, midwives, paediatrician and my support team were amazing and I am so proud that I birthed my beautiful baby into the world safely Also, you would have been so proud of James. He was my biggest advocate on the day for ensuring I had the birth I wanted. That was probably the most valuable thing we learned from Calmbirth, to be empowered in the experience. #calmbirthwithjessica #calmbirth #empoweringbirth #birthteam

17.01.2022 Alex and I can’t thank you enough for the tools that you taught us through Calmbirth. When I became overdue with Charlie, the hospital started pressuring me to be induced due to his size. I really wanted to go into labour naturally and as a result of the course felt empowered to ask loads of questions and to push the date back as far as possible, believing that my body was perfectly capable of birthing the baby that it had built. Annoyingly, labour never started. So at 12 day...Continue reading

I'd long to have a cup of tea right here - alone with my thoughts. But then you wouldn't be singing so beautifully in your Frozen dress and matching tiara. I'd long for it to be easy. I'd long to spend an evening without thinking about washing nappies or packing lunches. But then you wouldn't be tucking your toys into bed so carefully using the clothes strewn on the floor as blankets. I'd long for it to be easy. I'd long for some beach time without a child who disliked the sand. But then you wouldn't be gleefully exploring your world within my sights. I'd long for it to be easy. I'd long to go out at night with no consequence and without considering your care. But then you wouldn't be in the sweetest pictures on my phone which reassure me that you are okay. I'd long for it to be easy. I'd long to write this without being interrupted. But then maybe I'd have nothing to write about. I'd long for it to be easy. I could wish it away. Or I could stay right here - with you - where we all belong so beautifully. Image: Kyle Nieber

There is a stack of research that exists and this is just one little piece of info from an Australian Study called ‘risk of uterine rupture in Australian women attempting vaginal birth after one prior Caesarean section: a retrospective population-based cohort study’ by Dekker et al. This research also found that ‘compared with spontaneous labour, risks were increased 3-5 fold for any induction, 6 fold for prostaglandin combined with oxytocin and 14 fold for augmentation with oxytocin’. #vbac #vbacsuccess #vbacwithoutfear #nbac #hbac #transformativebirthwork See more

16.01.2022 We are so excited and proud to be announcing that we are still revolutionising and pioneering childbirth education by having Australia’s first ever, fully train...ed and qualified, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Dr Lanzis Homar, join our Calmbirth family by becoming a Calmbirth Educator. This is a milestone in changing our birth culture one family at a time, through the collaborative approach of an obstetrician working together with his midwife and pregnant couples to bring about cultural change and minimise the risk of intervention. I attended Calmbirth classes myself as a first-time father. I fell in love with the program and promised myself that one day I would incorporate Calmbirth into my obstetric practice. The course helps women mobilise resources within themselves and with their partners to confidently birth their baby. Having begun my career in Madagascar, I have seen many beautiful births without intervention in a country with very few medical resources. I know that birthing women have amazing resources and inner strength, and with Calmbirth I can help them to unlock it. A good collaboration between midwife, doctor, and couple, can minimize the risk of intervention. That is why I decided to create the first Calmbirth course jointly run by both an Obstetrician and a Midwife. I believe in providing personalised, respectful and gentle holistic care and truly understand that a couples birth experience will last in their minds and hearts forever. Please join Calmbirth with Lanziz & Sally, in the beautiful city of Toowoomba. "I will be working alongside my very talented and passionate midwife, Sally Crothers, who I will be introducing to you in next week’s blog.so stay tuned."

14.01.2022 Have you ever heard the words ‘not progressing’ muttered with reference to your own or another persons labour? The phrase ‘failure to progress’ is used to desc...ribe the deviance with which a woman’s cervix dilates when compared to the expectations of Dr Emanuel Friedman original (1955) and ongoing research about cervical dilation norms in labour. The current medical understanding of how labour should progress is rooted in Dr Friedman’s research; he was the first to depict a ‘labour curve’ and divide labour into stages. His research has since been discredited (like, it was discredited about 20 years ago!)... and we know that the Friedman curve to plot labour progress is incorrect. Despite having newer and better research about labour progress, most maternity care providers apply Friedman’s curve to labour and expect it to perform this way. If you deviate from the curve you have ‘failed to progress’ according to their expectations... BUT what is actually happening is that your care provider is applying an outdated and incorrect expectation onto your body... you have not failed to progress, they have failed to wait... it should not be labelled ‘failure to progress’ (where the blame is placed on women) it should be labelled ‘failure to wait’. Zhang et al (2010) in their study ‘contemporary patterns of spontaneous Labor with normal neonatal outcomes’ found that ‘Labor May take more than 6 hours to progress from 4 to 5 cm and more than 3 hours to progress from 5 to 6cm of dilation’... however, before we ‘told-you-so’ the entire obstetric profession, we should view Zhang’s findings with some scepticism. Although this research found the pattern of labour to deviate from Friedman’s curve, approximately 50% of the women in their study were under the influence of synthetic oxytocin (syntocinon/pitocin) in order to speed up their labour. So, this research still cannot fully inform us about the physiological unfolding of labour and how fast or slow it might progress... but it does open up an opportunity to change our beliefs about labour progress #failuretoprogressorfailuretowait #birth #induction #medicalisationofbirth See more

10.01.2022 Sometimes, it is in the most ordinary of moments that things happen that could make your heart burst with love and peace ... My 4 month old was just waking from... her nap and I thought I’d quickly offer her a nurse just in case she wanted a bit longer so I laid with her on our bed and she hopped on peacefully. She was suckling away when I hear , ‘Mum! Muuuuum?! Muuuum, I need to poo!’ And in walks Mr 3 (tomorrow). He sees us cuddled up on the bed and he smiles and says, ‘Oh S baby, you awake.’ As he climbs up and gently kisses the back of her head. She immediately pops off and spins around to give him a milky smile before turning and hopping back on. He nestles in behind her. I ask him if he needs to go to the toilet but he replies, ‘I wait mama, I’m just snuggin our darlin’. Next thing I hear is Mr 4.5 coming down the hall calling for me and asking where his brother is. I let him know we are in the room. He walks in and instantly smiles. He says, ‘did our girl wake up, mum?’ And also climbs up and kisses her feet and cuddles in next to us. She nurses a bit longer then rolls onto her back with the biggest smile. In that moment, everything in my world just made sense. Life with three littles is hectic and often frustrating and it’s easy to get dragged down by the mundane. So I tried my very best to store every minute detail of that moment in my memory as I lived and breathed my perfectly imperfect little world for that brief time of pure bliss ... And then he went and did that poo ... It’s an honour and privilege to be their mother Carly Grubb, 2018 #fromthearchives

10.01.2022 ‘A history of multiple cesarean births is not associated with an increased rate of uterine rupture in women attempting vaginal birth compared with those with a ...single prior caesarean’, from the 2006 research article by Landon et al called ‘risk of uterine rupture with a trial of Labor in women with multiple and single prior caesarean delivery’. Landon found that uterine rupture occurred for 9 out of 975 (0.9%) women who had multiple previous cesareans and 115 out of 16 915 (0.7%) women who had one prior cesarean birth. So whether you’ve experienced one or more prior births by cesarean, your chances of uterine rupture while attempting a VBAC is less than 1%. Landon et al concluded that ‘maternal morbidity is increased with trial of labour after multiple cesareans, compared with elective repeat cesareans, but the absolute risk for complications is small’. Landon et al were also able to report the success rates of VBAC in a hospital setting and found that women with a single prior cesarean had a success rate of 74%, 67% success rate if they had two prior cesareans, 63% for three prior and 55% for four prior cesarean births. Risk factors for uterine rupture identified in this study were oxytocin augmentation, induction of labour, epidural and less than a 2 year interval from previous cesarean. Both prior vaginal birth and prior successful VBAC were associated with lower risk for this complication... Landon et al conclude by stating, ‘vaginal birth after multiple cesarean deliveries (births) should remain an option for eligible women’. #vbac #vbacsuccess #vbacwithoutfear #vba2c #vba3c #hbac #nextbirthafterceasarean #transformativebirthwork

07.01.2022 Why would I ever leave my baby to cry alone to sleep when I could do THIS and know that one day I’ll look back and give anything to be in that moment again. . ...Don’t get me wrong. Sleep deprivation is hard. Really hard. . But I’m an adult. I can regulate my emotions. Babies (and even toddlers) can’t so they have no idea why you don’t answer their cries at night, it just leaves them feeling alone and in a chronic state of stress and emotional distress even when they stop crying. And it is FUCKING NORMAL for babies to wake during the night, it is how they are wired for thrive and survive and essential for them to receive love and connection. . Sending love to all the mummas who feel like they may be creating a bad habit by feeding, rocking, cuddling their little babes to sleep. . You’re not creating a bad habit. You’re cultivating love, security and comfort that will live within your child’s heart forever. . Fuck the professionals who try and tell you otherwise . This is Bella at 4 months old, being rocked to sleep with a dummy, sleeping in our bed and waking multiple nights to breastfeed and now at 1.5 years old, she has no dummy (her choice), sleeps in a cot and only wakes once to breastfeed through the night WITHOUT controlled crying (see my gentle night weaning IGTV for details). . It WILL end one day. They WILL sleep without you - eventually - and you’ll want to look back knowing you gave them all the love in the world they needed. So just do what you need to do to get by, be there for your baby and lean on those around you to help support YOU to be able to do that!

Did they tell you how your heart would explode with a love bigger than anything you’ve ever known as you pulled your baby to your chest? . They told you about the ring of fire but did they tell you about the crown of stars? . Did they mention that there’s a moment when your baby enters the world and you leave your body and touch the heavens and become the light of a million galaxies? . Did they tell you how the pain of stretching to receive your child would be more exsquisite than any sensation you’ve felt? . They told you would scream but did they tell you about how you would roar? . Did they tell you about the power that would rise up from your belly as you called your baby forth with your mighty voice? . Did they tell you how you would embody the wild woman within you and breathe fire with your song? . They told you would bleed, but did they tell you how that sacred blood wouldn’t scare you? How you would feel grateful for that magical liquid of life as it trickled down your leg- how you would honor its flow and how it would help you heal a lifetime of hating your body’s bleeding cycles. . They told these stories and taught you to fear birth, to fear your power, to fear yourself. But you’re stronger and wiser than that mama.
