18.01.2022 This week we have planted trees in a paddock in such as way that they cannot be reached by our livestock. This means (hopefully) they cannot be eaten, and will grow a little more quickly! We utilised an electric fence source to allow us to do this, as can be seen from the three black insulators on the posts. Our cattle are very used to electric fences and know the shock one touch from those wires can give! The smaller trees have had a tree guard bag put around them to help pr...otect them from frosts and rabbits whilst they are still young and easily damaged. This sort of fence is very easy to construct if you have the correct tools and equipment, a willing teacher such as myself to assist you; or perhaps you might like to employ a professional fencer to build it for you. And it is certainly worth it once the trees start to grow and provide wind, sun and rain shelter for your stock and pasture! See more

07.01.2022 So this is the first post I am writing for Calmer Farmer! I am hoping to be able to reach as many people as might need assistance with learning how to farm sustainably and productively on the Mornington Peninsula as possible, so if you know of anyone that might benefit from some farming advice, please let them know that I'm here!

07.01.2022 If you have been seeing these beautiful birds around recently you might be thinking how lucky you are to be near such abundant wildlife - and you wouldn't be wrong! But if you are trying to grow orchard trees of any sort you may find that it's your hard grown fruit that is attracting them - as a food source. Unfortunately for us, the lorikeets arrived before our plums were ripe and destroyed the majority of the crop before we could cover them, but we have managed to get our ...apples and pears covered in time. If you are considering covering your trees with nets, now is definitely the time to do it if you haven't already. But remember, there are new regulations coming into place in September of this year regarding the type of netting you will be able to use over your trees. Bird netting will need to have 5mm x 5mm mesh size at full stretch to help prevent entangling and killing birds and other wildlife. Fines of over $3300 will be issued to users after September 2021. 03.01.2022 I am not a vet, but with over 25 years hands on experience with farm animals, I wasn't going to let this little girl go without a fight! Obviously the sooner you can get to a baby born like this in the sac, the easier it is and the better their chances. This one really was hard work! And remember to please NEVER breathe directly into any animal's mouth or nose - it is a sure way to share zoonotic diseases.
