24.01.2022 Have you heard of the six building blocks of mental wellbeing? In short, each building block helps you respond to the range of mental tasks you face every day.... To keep your mind in top condition, its important to take the time to use each building block regularly . On the shelf of self-care, is 4 of the building blocks. From spending time in nature , to taking a moment to pause and be present , which building block will you focus on today? To celebrate our 2020 theme of 'Take time for Mental Health', we'll be highlighting each of the building blocks further as we approach QMHW. Image: Queensland Health.

24.01.2022 M.I.N.D.F.U.L. M.O.N.D.A.Y . Here’s one for the school holidays! Mindful jars are a proven mindfulness strategy, helping children of all ages to calm down. They’re also a great, fun craft project to do with your child and provide a practical tool for them to develop focus and awareness around their thoughts and emotions. . WHAT TO DO... . Fill glass (or plastic for younger children) bottles with water, glitter, glue and sensory objects. Add some food colouring for extra effect. Make sure you don’t overfill the jar and secure the lid tightly! Option to add stickers or calm reminders like breathe to the outside of the jar. . Once you’ve made the jar, explain the its purpose to children; shake it and tell them that our minds are often full of thoughts and sometimes we are overwhelmed by big emotions, they swirl around just like inside of the jar. Assure them that it’s okay to have strong feelings and that they will eventually settle. When we feel calm again, we can think more clearly, talk about things and figure out why we are upset. Encourage the child to have a go at shaking the jar, placing it down and watching it settle. Practice a few times. Explain they can do this when they are feeling upset, watching the contents of the jar settle until their minds settle too. . Give it a go and let us know what you think! See more

21.01.2022 We love learning from children as much as we love teaching them! . Children are such incredible teachers. Their innocence and presence is a pure inspiration. . One of the simplest ways to remember ourselves and be in the present moment is to observe a child and try to be more like them;... . Notice how everything they experience is brand new. . Notice how each feeling is felt - and expressed. . Notice how they find joy in the most simple things. . Notice how each moment can be full of creation, play, spirit and love. . May we try to be more like children and continue to encourage them to remember themselves. See more

17.01.2022 Breathing is such an important aspect of what we teach children We tell children their breath is like a special rocket ship that connects the body and the mind We educate children that by simply using our breath, we can change our state of mind and come back to a state of calm and balance ... We help children to understand their breath is like a dear friend, always there to help us. Children learn not only calming techniques in our classes (although they do learn lots of those!) but also energising techniques so the needs of both hyper and hypo arousal states are met. We believe supporting children to develop a strong sense of self awareness and to understand when they would need to use specific strategies for themselves outside of yoga too. Children’s minds are like sponges and we always ensure activities are fun, engaging and creative which encourages children to take these tools home, practice and apply them. They often share with us ways they’ve helped others at school with breathing or it at home to help them stay calm or go to sleep at night. We continue to be blown away by the amount the kids know at the end of term and to hear about how they transfer this to their lives. Would you like your child to learn some of these tools whilst exercising their body and mind and having heaps of fun?! Join us for our term 4 classes, places are filling quickly, so don’t delay! 15.01.2022 M.I.N.D.F.U.L. M.O.N.D.A.Y . Elephant breath is definitely a favourite with a lot of the kids we work with. . Also known as woodchopper breath, this technique provides an excellent way to help reduce stress and stimulate the nervous system. It also improves breathing by strengthening the diaphragm muscle and can help to increase focus.... . We love using this one to help energise kids, but it’s also great to use when they need to support to calm down and aren’t ready for calm strategies. Use this easy tool when kids are feeling frustrated as a transition towards supportive tools to calm the nervous system. . See more

13.01.2022 M.I.N.D.F.U.L M.O.N.D.A.Y Square Breathing One of our all time favs! So simple and children love it. ... WHAT TO DO Breathe in across the top of the square. Hold your breath down the side. Breathe out across the bottom of the square. Hold your breath up the side. Repeat as needed and notice how you feel afterwards. Props like this can help children to focus and keep them engaged. For visual children where props may not be available, try using a picture to trace for the first few times. . We love hearing how children use these techniques at home after learning them. A 9 year old recently told us she uses this technique at bedtime, drawing a square on her hand, tracing it and breathing until she feels calm. How cool is that?!

06.01.2022 M.I.N.D.F.U.L. M.O.N.D.A.Y . Rainbow Breathing is a fun and engaging technique that children love! . Quick and easy to do, it offers a great reset for the body and the mind.... . WHAT TO DO. . Rub your hands together a few times to create some heat. Take a deep breath in and lift your arms to the sky. As you breathe out, circle your arms around and imagine a big colourful rainbow all around you. Repeat 3 times or as needed. Notice how you feel afterwards. See more
06.01.2022 M.I.N.D.F.U.L M.O.N.D.A.Y It’s so important we teach children how to stop and press pause and embed this skill from a young age. The pause button can used as a quick and easy check in to reset and help find calm.... WHAT TO DO Imagine pressing pause on a remote control. It can sometimes be helpful for children to use a physical anchor to do this. This could be as simple as lightly pressing on a part of the body or another physical action to make it easier for them to associate and remember. Ask them to notice how they feel. This can sometimes be challenging children, so encourage them to notice if there is a particular part of their body that they feel something. Is there a word or name for the feeling that comes up or perhaps it’s more of a sensation for example hot, tingling, bubbling. This will help them develop awareness of the body and the mind. The more they do it, the easier it will become. Once they’ve identified how or what they are feeling, ask them to take some deep, slow breaths. Extending the exhale will help to calm the nervous system so this is always a good place to start. Once again, ask them to notice how they feel and if anything has changed. Give it a go, we’d love to know what you think! #mindfulmonday #toolsforkids #calmkids #kidsemotions #kidswellbeing #kidsmentalhealth #calmerkids #toolsforparents #anxiouskids #kidsyogasunshinecoast #sunshinecoastmums #childrenswellbeing #socialemotionaldevelopment #mindfulnessforkids

02.01.2022 Absolute truth . Talking positive behaviour management during our training over the last few days and the importance of children feeling listened to, heard and acknowledged. It’s from that place they can learn and grow.
