25.01.2022 It feels like this some days!

21.01.2022 NEWS!! This has finally happened! I'm excited to have completed my training through La Trobe University in early autism screening. I feel extremely lucky to be the first child health nurse in Western Australia to have had the opportunity to complete this course. ... As many of you know, this is a topic close to my heart and over the last couple of years, I've had the privilege of developing some lovely local community projects working with families living in the ASD space. With an 82 percent accuracy rate for autism diagnosis, the tool is more than seven times more accurate than current screening tools used as standard at routine child health appointments. This translates to swift referrals for early diagnosis by a multi-disciplinary team of health professionals. La Trobe University reports "The tool, developed over 15 years by Dr Barbaro, is used to identify a set of that are characteristic of children on the spectrum from as young as 12 months old, including infrequent or inconsistent use of: gestures, like waving and pointing at objects response to name being called eye contact imitation or copying others' activities sharing interest with others pretend play MoSAIC is currently the most effective way to identify autism in young children." More importantly, the tool is designed to specifically identify infants and toddlers at age 11 to 30 months. This is groundbreaking in the ASD space and life-changing for children and families who will be able to take advantage of early intervention, promoting much improved long term outcomes. This specialist training has already been rolled out across Tasmania, parts of New South Wales and in nine other countries. The training up-skills child health nurses to confidently identify the early signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) during targeted assessments and provides a highly accurate surveillance tool to detect 'red flags' specific to social communication and behaviours in infants and toddlers. I am a paediatric nurse and specialist community public health nurse working in child health and primary school education support. The Western Australian Department of Health has not yet commissioned the training to be incorporated as part of their 0-5 screening process, hopefully this will come in time. I offer both funded and private appointments which will be available to book soon. This includes the option of Virtual Health appointments which will be face to face via Zoom. Please check back for updates and how to book. Feel free to contact me for further information.
