22.01.2022 IN 2016, THE HEADLINE WAS... A thought-provoking photograph that explores the sense of loss has won the Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2016 when Sunshine Coast-based photographer Michael Cook (pictured with the work) was announced as the winner with his work ‘Mother Tennis’. The work is part of Cook’s series entitled Mother a journey through 13 images of a woman in a deserted Australian landscape. The mother is always alone, her baby absent, although evidence remains of the...re having been a child: the empty pram, the abandoned toys on the hopscotch court, the slackness of the skipping rope. These images possess an arrested stillness that implies a recently bereft status While these images speak directly and poetically to Australia’s Stolen Generation, they speak also to a universal experience of disconnection between mother and child. Judge Jane Deeth described Cook’s work as a beautifully realised work, adding The work invites us to examine every detail very closely, revealing layers of profound loss and longing that can be read in many ways from the most personal to the most political, and connecting to memories and histories that continue to haunt the present. Spend some time with this reflective work until 4 October. ‘Mother Tennis’ (2016), Michael Cook BIDJARA, Digital photograph inkjet on photo rag, 80 x 120cm. 18.01.2022 TWO CULTURES. TWO CONTINENTS. Oksana Waterfall’s deeply personal Sunshine Coast Art Prize finalist work ‘My mother speaks to me in a foreign language’ pays homage to her mother. One of the key themes in my art is that of people. I am forever a watcher. That is never been more so than watching, then documenting, my family. My mother was a displaced person after World War II. She and her family found their way across Europe and embarked for Australia in the first wave of pos...t war immigration. It is her experience bridging two cultures and two continents that greatly affects me. "This portrait of my mother as a child just about to leave for Australia incorporates elements of Ukrainian design, including a rose, common in Ukrainian iconography. ‘My mother speaks to me in a foreign language’ (2018), graphite, oil paint and thread on plywood, 60 x 60cm. Image courtesy of the artist and Lorraine Pilgrim Gallery, Gold Coast. Exhibited until 6 Dec. 17.01.2022 ABOUT PERCEPTION Sunshine Coast Art Prize finalist Leigh Schoenheimer says her work ‘The Meaning of (Still) Life: The Wooden Pineapple’ is part of an ongoing body of work in which I investigate ideas about ‘perception’. The multi-paneled format which I typically use, always traces a shift from realism towards more conceptual approaches to image making. A literal depiction of a set of objects sits alongside and meshes with a conceptual response to the same subject matter, pre...sented here via a series of appropriated clip-art symbols. Through the use of repeated imagery and colour harmonies, connections arise between these two very different ways of establishing meaning. Aesthetics are the key to holding these complex works together, with colour and layout at the forefront of my mind, when building them. References are made to the imagery and styles of the many 20th century artists who re-wrote the rule-book on image making, thereby marking the shift in art historical terms from perceptual to conceptual approaches." We were so delighted that Leigh visited us at the gallery today, and graciously posed with her conceptual piece. ‘The Meaning of (Still) Life: The Wooden Pineapple’ (2019), oil on plywood, 61 x 61cm. 10.01.2022 MASKS AS PERSONAL FIREWALLS Freya Jobbins’ Sunshine Coast Art Prize finalist artwork ‘Mask #1 Firewall Series’ is from a body of work called FIREWALL, completed during isolation. It continues my current practice which based on appropriation, re-assemblage and subversion of pre-existent objects, where I explore notions of identity, motifs and my own dissimulation. ... A facial mask is becoming an accepted accessory, the mask can now also be a statement of public fear, personal security, protection, a social firewall. Continuing on from my previous works where I address contemporary subjects like domestic violence and mental health issues, I am looking into how we used these masks now to further our ability to use them as our own personal firewalls in a very visceral way. Wearing headsets, sunglasses and the focused stare on our phones are social firewalls; they signal a lack of desire to communicate with those around you, masks now add to that firewall of protection. An act of ‘social distancing’ by choice. ‘Mask #1 Firewall Series’ (2020), pigment print on archival cotton rag, 75 x 105cm Exhibited until 6 Dec. Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2020 is proudly sponsored and supported by Argon Law, De Deyne Family, Caloundra Chamber of Commerce, Coastline BMW, Montville Country Cabins and International Art Services. #scap2020 #sunshinecoastartprize #contemporaryart #visitcaloundra #masksasfirewalls

03.01.2022 IN 2013, WE GOT LOVESICK. Accomplished artist Celeste Chandler was named winner of the Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2013 with her work ‘Lovesick #7’ by judge Peter McKay - Curator of Contemporary Australian Art, Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA). Her soft yet exacting layered brushwork in Lovesick #7 creates a tonal interplay that excites the eye and creates an arresting complexity. This particular self-portrait explores a curious psychological state. ... The buttery disguise that obscures many of the artist’s features is ambiguous and allusive: it could be interpreted very literally and seen as a beauty mask, food or paint; or it could be a kind of imaginary substance that illustrates a sensation of separation or isolation, feeling that sharing our individual subjective experiences is an impossibility. View this striking work until 4 October. ‘Lovesick #7’ (2012), Celeste Chandler, Oil on linen on round stretcher, 70 x 70cm. Winner, Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2013, acquired through the support of Sunshine Coast Council. 03.01.2022 GLASSWARE Luke Pither’s Sunshine Coast Art Prize finalist work ‘Glassware’ was created as part of ‘Paintings for Marjory’, a 49-work painting installation exploring both anomaly and biography, held this year at Galerie Pompom in Sydney. Equally optic as subject in its inquiry the body of work is a pondering of forgotten processes, leftovers, nuances and visual hierarchies of order that contribute to our unique individual perspectives as we consider a life lived. As optical... histories overtake sensations of experiential understanding, categories of humility, humour, trauma and curiosity interplay equally across a playful visual homage. Glassware considers ornamental histories and changes in style and nuance throughout the 20th and 21st Centuries and acts as a portrait of a collector. ‘Glassware’ (2019) (detail), synthetic polymer and oil on canvas, 100 x 75cm. 02.01.2022 VOLUNTEERS CHOICE - Margaret Loy Pula’s intricate artwork ‘Anmatyerre Anatye (Bush Potato)’ is the top choice of our dedicated volunteers Robyn and Keary (And with a combined 30 years of gallery volunteering under their belt, it’s fair to say they know a thing or two about visual art!) #love #volunteers In 2011, Pula became the first female to win the Sunshine Coast Art Prize. Her artwork is inspired by traditional Anmatyerre stories handed down by her father, particularly th...emes around the deeply spiritual ‘anatye’ (bush potato). Pula explains, "Growing up in the small outstations at Utopia, outside Alice Springs, I would watch the bush potato vines grow after the rains and the women who would then dig up the vines and cook them in the hot coals of a fire. This painting is about my culture, it is from my father’s country. That country is called Unjangola, it is north of Utopia, really desert country. Enjoy the detail of this striking work in the gallery until 4 October. ‘Anmatyerre Anatye (Bush Potato)’ (2010), Margaret Loy Pula, Acrylic on linen, 120 x 120cm. 01.01.2022 BEFORE SOCIAL DISTANCING WAS A THING, more than 200 people gathered for the official opening of the Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2015. Robert Fenton’s ‘Item #1770, Florilegium’ was announced as the winner. Fenton describes the work as a record of the monumental botanical collections made by Sir Joseph Banks and his team of naturalists aboard James Cook's Endeavour, 1768-1771. In mid-1770 Sir Joseph Banks added to this collection with the flora, plants collected from the now name...d Sunshine Coast. Culture is moving fast and people seem to be disconnected from nature. By hanging the plants upside down and by placing the flora in plastic it is about seeing this flora as a new species as Banks would have done in 1770. It may be wrong and mixed up but it still has that bright and beautiful presence that discovery has. Judge Amanda Parer explained "I chose this...artwork because all the elements that have been placed by the artist give the piece strength and quality that allows the viewer's imagination to extend beyond what is there in the four edges of the frame. "This work achieves relevance on personal, public, contemporary and historical levels through its efficient professional execution. "This work can be worthy in any collection but I am particularly happy that it will be acquired into the Sunshine Coast Art Collection because of its direct relevance to the region." - Visit the gallery before 4 October to appreciate the exquisite detail of this work.
