25.01.2022 GLASSWARE Luke Pither’s Sunshine Coast Art Prize finalist work ‘Glassware’ was created as part of ‘Paintings for Marjory’, a 49-work painting installation exploring both anomaly and biography, held this year at Galerie Pompom in Sydney. Equally optic as subject in its inquiry the body of work is a pondering of forgotten processes, leftovers, nuances and visual hierarchies of order that contribute to our unique individual perspectives as we consider a life lived. As optical... histories overtake sensations of experiential understanding, categories of humility, humour, trauma and curiosity interplay equally across a playful visual homage. Glassware considers ornamental histories and changes in style and nuance throughout the 20th and 21st Centuries and acts as a portrait of a collector. ‘Glassware’ (2019) (detail), synthetic polymer and oil on canvas, 100 x 75cm. 25.01.2022 TWO CULTURES. TWO CONTINENTS. Oksana Waterfall’s deeply personal Sunshine Coast Art Prize finalist work ‘My mother speaks to me in a foreign language’ pays homage to her mother. One of the key themes in my art is that of people. I am forever a watcher. That is never been more so than watching, then documenting, my family. My mother was a displaced person after World War II. She and her family found their way across Europe and embarked for Australia in the first wave of pos...t war immigration. It is her experience bridging two cultures and two continents that greatly affects me. "This portrait of my mother as a child just about to leave for Australia incorporates elements of Ukrainian design, including a rose, common in Ukrainian iconography. ‘My mother speaks to me in a foreign language’ (2018), graphite, oil paint and thread on plywood, 60 x 60cm. 25.01.2022 DIRECTOR’S CUT: Lawrence Daws’ ‘Poinciana’ (1990) is a favourite Sunshine Coast Art Collection work of John Waldron (Director 2004-2012). The former Director explains With it we see an artist’s seemingly effortless ability to capture a moment with nature, a skill borne of decades of observation and work. ‘Poinciana’ was part of the touring exhibition ‘The Promised Land: The Art of Lawrence Daws’ to mark the gallery’s tenth year - reminding Waldron of the importance of cel...ebrating and promoting the achievements of local artists. Daws’ Glass House Mountains studio at the time was, Waldron recalls, a haven for prominent Australian artists, such as Brett Whiteley, John Olsen, Tim Storrier and Donald Friend. Daws gifted the mixed media work to the Sunshine Coast Art Collection following the exhibition. The artist is represented in every major Australian public collection as well as Tate Gallery, London; The Victoria and Albert Museum, London; The National Gallery of Beijing and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh. On exhibition until 4 October. #lawrencedaws #sunshinecoastartcollection #tategallery #victoriaalbertmuseum #scottishnationalgallery #brettwhiteley #johnolsenart #timstorrier #donaldfriend
24.01.2022 The experience and essence of a surface. Nicole Voevodin-Cash is a contemporary Queensland artist, accomplished arts educator and celebrated advocate for the creative sector. Voevodin-Cash’s technique of LANDscanning or digital frottage is a process-based art form designed to photographically photocopy and capture the invisible and overlooked surfaces and textures that surround us every day. This process makes Voevodin-Cash a kinetic artist, as she generates art by capturing ...through rubbing and scanning the surfaces of the world. "I physically explore and document using a hand held scanning tool to touch surfaces, so what I touch you see, visually recorded. Sometimes I scan and record metres at a time, capturing the experience and essence of the surface rather than just a representation." Immerse yourself in her digital (photographic) frottage scan works ‘Bench Seat Knowth’, ‘Corden Mural’ and ‘Peeling painted walls Hong Kong’ (pictured to the right) - part of our ‘Constructing Landscape: urban visions’ exhibition. 24.01.2022 WINNER 2008 - It’s totally different to anything I have done before. It’s a bit of fun professed Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2008 winner, Scott Redford, of his winning work ‘Reinhardt’s Silver Instant Painting’. The renowned Gold Coast-based artist was inspired by the main character of a feature film he had begun to write - 22-year-old surfer Reinhardt Damm - I really got into the mind of his character, and it is so much easier to create when you are someone else, you are mo...re free. Writer, curator, broadcaster and guest judge in 2008, Julie Ewington, affirmed The Sunshine Coast Art Prize is a goodie because they have all sorts of different kinds of works and they are very open-minded. On exhibition until 4 October. ‘Reinhardt’s Silver Instant Painting’ (2008), Scott Redford, Acrylic, spray-can enamel and stickers on canvas, 104 x 104cm. 23.01.2022 DIRECTOR’S CHOICE: 'Glasshouse Mountains Triptych' (2002) (detail) by Joanne Currie Nalingu was selected by Foundation Director & Curator 2000-2004, Sandi Conte, for our current 20th Anniversary exhibition. Currie Nalingu completed this commanding work with 'at risk' youth, in her words, "to give them confidence, skills and to keep them off the streets", and was later generously donated by the artist to the Sunshine Coast Art Collection. Conte reminisces about her rich frie...ndship with the artist, launched after she phoned Joanne and suggested we get together at the library where we talked about various things, building trust and fondness The friendship with Joanne continued and culminated in the mounting of Joanne's first ever curated solo exhibition which I entitled 'Give 'em Currie' 2003-2004 in the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery Following the exhibition, Conte describes how she approached the Mayor and requested that it be installed in the public chambers behind the dais where the Executive and Caloundra City Councillors sat and all critical decision making was delivered. This placement was poignant for many reasons, forming a wonderful, considered backdrop for the administrative process, with the public gallery simultaneously looking at the work and, through the fully glassed wall, to see the exact mountain subject. The Mayor agreed to trial it and to this day it remains in the same location. Taking a short respite from its regular haunt at council chambers, the artwork is being exhibited at the gallery until Sunday 4 October. Patron of the Caloundra Regional Gallery at the time, Joan Sheldon, commented I think it’s great for a young emerging artist like Tony to win such a prestigious award. The work is part of Albert’s photographic series ‘Gangsta Supastar’, based on a character called 50perCENT, an identifiably Aboriginal hip hop artist/ga...ngsta whose posse includes such imaginary personas as Lil Gin, Murri J Blige and Notorious B.E.L.L. 20.01.2022 ABOUT PERCEPTION Sunshine Coast Art Prize finalist Leigh Schoenheimer says her work ‘The Meaning of (Still) Life: The Wooden Pineapple’ is part of an ongoing body of work in which I investigate ideas about ‘perception’. The multi-paneled format which I typically use, always traces a shift from realism towards more conceptual approaches to image making. A literal depiction of a set of objects sits alongside and meshes with a conceptual response to the same subject matter, pre...sented here via a series of appropriated clip-art symbols. Through the use of repeated imagery and colour harmonies, connections arise between these two very different ways of establishing meaning. Aesthetics are the key to holding these complex works together, with colour and layout at the forefront of my mind, when building them. References are made to the imagery and styles of the many 20th century artists who re-wrote the rule-book on image making, thereby marking the shift in art historical terms from perceptual to conceptual approaches." We were so delighted that Leigh visited us at the gallery today, and graciously posed with her conceptual piece. ‘The Meaning of (Still) Life: The Wooden Pineapple’ (2019), oil on plywood, 61 x 61cm. 19.01.2022 BEFORE SOCIAL DISTANCING WAS A THING, more than 200 people gathered for the official opening of the Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2015. Robert Fenton’s ‘Item #1770, Florilegium’ was announced as the winner. Fenton describes the work as a record of the monumental botanical collections made by Sir Joseph Banks and his team of naturalists aboard James Cook's Endeavour, 1768-1771. In mid-1770 Sir Joseph Banks added to this collection with the flora, plants collected from the now name...d Sunshine Coast. Culture is moving fast and people seem to be disconnected from nature. By hanging the plants upside down and by placing the flora in plastic it is about seeing this flora as a new species as Banks would have done in 1770. It may be wrong and mixed up but it still has that bright and beautiful presence that discovery has. Judge Amanda Parer explained "I chose this...artwork because all the elements that have been placed by the artist give the piece strength and quality that allows the viewer's imagination to extend beyond what is there in the four edges of the frame. "This work achieves relevance on personal, public, contemporary and historical levels through its efficient professional execution. "This work can be worthy in any collection but I am particularly happy that it will be acquired into the Sunshine Coast Art Collection because of its direct relevance to the region." - Visit the gallery before 4 October to appreciate the exquisite detail of this work. Her artwork is inspired by traditional Anmatyerre stories handed down by her father, particularly th...emes around the deeply spiritual ‘anatye’ (bush potato). Pula explains, "Growing up in the small outstations at Utopia, outside Alice Springs, I would watch the bush potato vines grow after the rains and the women who would then dig up the vines and cook them in the hot coals of a fire. This painting is about my culture, it is from my father’s country. That country is called Unjangola, it is north of Utopia, really desert country. 14.01.2022 IN 2013, WE GOT LOVESICK. Accomplished artist Celeste Chandler was named winner of the Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2013 with her work ‘Lovesick #7’ by judge Peter McKay - Curator of Contemporary Australian Art, Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA). Her soft yet exacting layered brushwork in Lovesick #7 creates a tonal interplay that excites the eye and creates an arresting complexity. This particular self-portrait explores a curious psychological state. ... The buttery disguise that obscures many of the artist’s features is ambiguous and allusive: it could be interpreted very literally and seen as a beauty mask, food or paint; or it could be a kind of imaginary substance that illustrates a sensation of separation or isolation, feeling that sharing our individual subjective experiences is an impossibility. View this striking work until 4 October. ‘Lovesick #7’ (2012), Celeste Chandler, Oil on linen on round stretcher, 70 x 70cm. 14.01.2022 A Landscape Painter’s Story of Surviving Lockdown During lockdown, contemporary watercolour artist and ‘Local Artists Local Content’ finalist Libby Derham found an innovative way to leave the walls of her studio behind to capture the landscape of her Sunshine Coast home - and a creative use for Brisbane City Council (among others) envelopes! In lockdown I wasn’t allowed out to paint plein air, so I began creating mark making scrolls ‘drawing whilst walking’ starting from m...y home. Once a week, I was lucky enough to escape my isolation to the beautiful Landsborough and surrounds for my youngest’s schooling, I would sit in the car to create paintings on envelopes (part of my current practice is exploring unconventional substrates) or drawing scrolls of the mountains. "As restrictions eased, I was finally able to sit outside to paint the ranges, Mt. Ninderry and Mt. Eerwah and relish in the freedom of plein air painting again. 08.01.2022 FLASHBACK TO 2009 Acclaimed Maleny artist Peter Hudson was declared winner of the Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2009 with his emotive oil painting ‘Law’. The work, Hudson explains, breaches the divide between the natural and human worlds,Sadly, modern humans are losing their consciousness and their connection to homeland. The painting ‘Law’ is a reminder of scale, power, beauty, deep mystery and living in hope that all will be okay. Guest Judge Philip Bacon said he chose the w...inning artwork because The ebb and flow of human consciousness, indeed of human life, emanates from the canvas. 07.01.2022 DIRECTOR’S CUT: ‘Stickman #2’ by Michael Cook is current Director Jo Duke’s selection for our 20th anniversary exhibition. A descendant of the Bidjara people of South West Queensland, Cook was drawn to art photography as a means to explore his ancestry. Political and beautiful, Cook’s ‘Stickman’ series depicts a solitary Aboriginal figure within the vastness of archetypal Australian landscapes. The work resonates strongly with Duke the idea of how First Nations lived in... and cared for their environment and the strong and continuing connection they have for their Country and then the absolute devastation of everything for them after colonisation to their families and their nations with the massive loss of lives as well as their Culture and their Country. On exhibition until 4 October. Exhibition comments include "I love this gallery and how it represents our community, our art, our place..." Michael Cook. ‘Stickman #2’, 2010 (detail). 04.01.2022 Living. Observing. Connecting. Echoing. The story of the everyday fascinates Anne Harris. Finding beauty and rhythm in surroundings and using this to record and tell stories, as art has told stories since the beginning of time is at the heart of her arts practice. Harris uses craft based practices, as she finds this helps make direct links between process and people. The layers of meaning become infused both metaphorically and literally. The pigments, fibres and compounds are... captured using traditional and experimental techniques. She is pictured with her work ‘Ordinary Series Parking’ (plant pigment on silk cotton with silk thread stitching), and the traffic cone work by Ken Munsie. Part of the the current ‘Constructing Landscape: urban visions’ exhibition. Until 7 Feb. #natureart #regionalgallery #visitsunshinecoast #caloundra #streetart #urbanart #constructinglandscape

04.01.2022 DIRECTOR'S CHOICE: Laith McGregor's 'Istanbul' (2014) was hand-picked by Hamish Sawyer (Director 2016-2019) for our current exhibition celebrating 20 years of Caloundra Regional Gallery. McGregor's practice draws attention to the "grey areas that exist between fiction and non-fiction". Sawyer is drawn to the artist's sense of uncanny, admiring both the object's familiarity and its strangeness, adding "it's exciting to witness an artist's development manifest itself in their w...ork." McGregor began making ceramics in 2014, seeking reprieve from his labour-intensive drawings and paintings. 'Istanbul' is from the artist's first series of ceramic sculptures and was included in his 2018 exhibition 'Borrowed Time' at our gallery. Sawyer continues "'Istanbul' reveals a similar, figurative preoccupation and emphasis on the artist's hand, to his works on paper and canvas". The work was generously gifted to the Sunshine Coast Art Collection by the artist.
04.01.2022 Shane Pickett’s abstract landscape ‘Wanyarang the Calling Season for Rain’ was announced as the winner of the inaugural 2006 Sunshine Coast Art Prize by art critic and guest judge Susan McCulloch. Pickett (1957-2010), a prominent artist of Nyoongar heritage, was raised in Western Australia. Living with rheumatoid arthritis, he gravitated to art from an early age, quickly mastering the figurative landscape style of the Nyoongar people. He has been described as combining a mod...ern, abstract landscape-painting style with ancient spirituality, with a career embracing transformation and reinvention. Pickett’s works are represented in many of Australia’s significant collections. Depicting the importance of the rain season to his culture, 'Wanyarang the Calling Season for Rain' is part of the Sunshine Coast Art Collection. On exhibition until 4 October. #firstnationsart #alwayswasalwayswillbe #culture #indigenousart #contemporaryart #sunshinecoastartprize #crg20years #sunshinecoastartcollection

01.01.2022 MASKS AS PERSONAL FIREWALLS Freya Jobbins’ Sunshine Coast Art Prize finalist artwork ‘Mask #1 Firewall Series’ is from a body of work called FIREWALL, completed during isolation. It continues my current practice which based on appropriation, re-assemblage and subversion of pre-existent objects, where I explore notions of identity, motifs and my own dissimulation. ... A facial mask is becoming an accepted accessory, the mask can now also be a statement of public fear, personal security, protection, a social firewall. Continuing on from my previous works where I address contemporary subjects like domestic violence and mental health issues, I am looking into how we used these masks now to further our ability to use them as our own personal firewalls in a very visceral way. Wearing headsets, sunglasses and the focused stare on our phones are social firewalls; they signal a lack of desire to communicate with those around you, masks now add to that firewall of protection. An act of ‘social distancing’ by choice. ‘Mask #1 Firewall Series’ (2020), pigment print on archival cotton rag, 75 x 105cm Exhibited until 6 Dec. Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2020 is proudly sponsored and supported by Argon Law, De Deyne Family, Caloundra Chamber of Commerce, Coastline BMW, Montville Country Cabins and International Art Services. #scap2020 #sunshinecoastartprize #contemporaryart #visitcaloundra #masksasfirewalls
