25.01.2022 Celebrating International Cleaners Day

23.01.2022 Today on the 11th day at the 11th hour we honour the memory of those who died or who were injured in wars and armed conflicts. On this day 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare. More than 330,000 Australians served overseas during this time and more than 60,000 died. One of the first flowers to bloom on the devastated battlefields of Flanders was the Red Poppy. Its bright red colour symbolised the blood shed duri...ng the horrific conflict, but also the hope of new life. The presence of these resilient bright red blooms on broken ground lead to the poppy becoming the symbol of remembrance day. Lest we forget.

23.01.2022 OUR AMAZING TACS TEAM RESPONDING TO COVID 19: TACS is a multidisciplinary allied health and nursing team that looks after vulnerable older adults (over 65 year olds) in their homes promoting independence and re-enablement after a hospital admission. During COVID-19 the team has often been the only support for our patients who dont have any family support. The team have gone grocery shopping, picked up medication, taken our patient to medical appointments and provided essential services for our older adult population in the St George Area. The holistic support that the team provides has enabled older adults to remain safely at home during this challenging time. 22.01.2022 During NAIDOC Week 2020 (8-15 November) celebrations are held across Australia each year to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, who have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. The 2020 NAIDOC Week theme Always Was, Always Will Be acknowledges that hundreds of Nations and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islan...der cultures covered this continent. All were managing the land - the biggest estate on earth - to sustainably provide for their future. As part of Calvary’s own journey of reconciliation, we commissioned Thomas Croft, a Barngarla man, born in Whyalla, South Australia, to create a design to remind us of the centrality of the importance of reconciliation, community and care. The image reminds us that we heal when we celebrate our First Peoples as a river offering life to our communities.

21.01.2022 This week, 24-30 May 2020, is National Palliative Care Week. The theme is Palliative Care: Its more than you think. Across Calvary, staff and services providing palliative and end of life care are particularly known for their resourcefulness and flexibility in meeting the changing needs of the people in our care and their families. 20.01.2022 COVID-19 has called for flexibility and innovation in palliative care. Last Friday, Calvary Health Care Kogarah's Professor Liz Lobb, Professor of Palliative Care (Allied Health) and Deputy Chair of Calvary's Palliative and End of Life Care Research Institute joined a panel of experts including Dr Norman Swan and Professor Meera Agar, addressing the Parliamentary Friends of Palliative Care. Hosted by Palliative Care Australia, the discussion focused on COVID-19 and Palliative Care: Lessons and learnings to build back better. Watch the webcast at https://bit.ly/39Peu1o

19.01.2022 Today is Dying to Know Day. This year more than ever weve learned about the importance of staying connected and having early conversations about living and dying. When those close to us understand what we value most it can help them to support our choices when we approach the end of our life. This is a conversation that can begin at any time and continue as our needs change over time. You can read more about Dying to Know Day and some online events at https://bit.ly/2DLkoCo

19.01.2022 Has there ever been a more important time to ask, R U OK?, and to progress the conversation if it isnt? Today is R U OK? Day and we are all being asked to learn what to say if someone in our life says they are not OK. This years theme Theres more to say after R U OK? focusses on building our confidence and skills so to help us know how to navigate a conversation with someone in our life who might be struggling.... We dont have to be experts, but by knowing what to say when someone says theyre not OK we can show we care and genuinely help someone access appropriate support long before theyre in crisis. That conversation could change, or even save, their life. By asking, listening without judgement, encouraging action and checking in, you can help someone you care about through a tough time. Be part of the conversation - find out more at https://www.ruok.org.au/how-to-ask R U OK?

16.01.2022 Without realising it was National Palliative Care week, poet Torie Cooper emailed CHCKs Palliative Care to send her heartfelt appreciation for the care her grandmother received a couple of years ago at Calvary. Torie wrote that she often looks back on that long period of time when she acted as Nanas carer. In retrospect, she appreciates how healing and sacred the experience was thanks to the amazing team at Calvary. The love and compassion shown to Nana and her family hav...e never been forgotten. Torie published a book of poems regarding her carer experience and has already started a second book. Here is one of Tories poems about Nana at Calvary: Safety Net They come, hearing my hearts silent cries. They phone, interrupting my self-neglect. They listen, hearing what remains unspoken. They support, holding my crumbling self. Calvary Hospital ID cards Clipped to their shirts, Hanging from lanyards; Wingless angels Caring for me.

16.01.2022 CALVARY STAFF & SESLHD OT AWARDS 2020 Congratulations go to Felicity Forby, Amanda Lancaster and Laura Holland who were nominated for the SESLHD OT awards this year recognising their excellence in care and commitment to the profession. Felicity received the SESLHD OT of the year Award 2020 which is wonderful acknowledgement of her leadership in Palliative care.

15.01.2022 Across all our Calvary services we would normally have around 1123 volunteers who assist us in providing a range of services, however with COVID-19, our emphasis has been on their health and wellbeing, so the decision was made for our volunteer cohort to take leave during this pandemic. Calvary Kogarah has about 200 volunteers and 50 auxiliary members and their presence is certainly missed by not only our patients but by our staff as well. Its all those little things they d...o that make such a big difference in the lives of our patients and their families. Things like a haircut, a manicure, arranging their flowers, taking time to sit and engage in conversations whilst providing a much appreciated foot / hand massage, capturing a patients biography, assisting in the patient gym, assisting at meal times, working in the little shop.. to name just a few of the many kindnesses provided by our volunteers. We certainly miss the many intangible ways they assist us each day with their extraordinary range of personalities, their diverse skills and life experiences which add such value and care to the whole patient experience. Our amazing auxiliary members are usually in the foyer meeting and greeting folk, running the Little Shop and taking essentials around to patients via the trolley too! It is heartening to know so many volunteers and auxiliary keep in touch with each other during this time of splendid isolation. Our community volunteers have continued to provide virtual contact and support with their palliative care clients, which I know has been much appreciated. So during this time, we take a moment to thank each and every one of our Calvary volunteers & auxiliary, recognising their extraordinary contribution and look forward to them re-joining the Calvary team as soon as it is deemed optimal to do so. We certainly miss each and every one!

13.01.2022 This week Occupational therapists celebrate their profession with the theme Resilience: Supporting our communities to rebuild, recover and re-engage. 2020 has seen droughts, bushfires and the global pandemic and Occupational Therapists have been called to support people to participate in activities they find meaningful in helping communities through disaster recovery. As disaster survivors reengage in disrupted occupations (such as daily routines, activities and employment), they can better cope with stress and be supported through their recovery.

12.01.2022 How to wear a mask from NSW Government see poster below. Maintain at least a 1.5 metre distance from others and wash your hands frequently and thoroughly, even while wearing a mask. https://vimeo.com/441957521/d547c2d59f

12.01.2022 It was a long journey in 1885 from the dark slums of nineteenth century industrial England to the sunny shores and oppressive heat of Sydney. Six pioneering Sisters immediately set to work nursing the sick, running a soup kitchen, a night refuge, a school for the visually impaired, a parish school and providing social services to those in need. Soon they would establish the first of many hospitals on our shores. These were the indomitable women of the Sisters of the Little Co...mpany of Mary who’s pioneering spirit of being for others started an approach to caring for the sick, the dying and those in need that was to grow and expand across the country. We are Calvary Health Care. Today, we celebrate 135 years since the Sisters sailed into Sydney, and the legacy they have left us all.

11.01.2022 One new case of COVID-19 was diagnosed in the 24 hours to 8pm last night, bringing the total number of cases in NSW to 3,783. There were 32,580 tests reported ...in the 24-hour reporting period, compared with 28,767 in the previous 24 hours. The new case is a close contact of a previously reported case at Hornsby Hospital. The case went into isolation before the commencement of their infectious period, following notification of the previous Hornsby case. If you have any cold or flu-like symptoms at all, assume its COVID-19 until proven otherwise isolate and get tested right away; dont delay. While case numbers have remained low this week the virus continues to circulate in the community and vigilance must be maintained. It is vital that high rates of testing continue in order to find the source of the cases still under investigation and to identify and stop further spread of the virus. NSW Health is urging anyone with even the mildest of symptoms including runny nose, sore throat, cough, or loss of taste and smell to come forward for testing. It is the best way to protect your family, friends and the wider community. For a list of locations associated with known cases and advice on testing and isolation, and areas identified for increased testing, see: https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/latest-news-and-updates. There are currently 111 COVID-19 cases being treated by NSW Health. There are seven COVID 19 patients in intensive care and six are ventilated. 85 per cent of cases being treated by NSW Health are in non-acute, out-of-hospital care. To help stop the spread of COVID-19: - If you are unwell, stay in, get tested and isolate. - Wash your hands regularly. Take hand sanitiser with you when you go out. - Keep your distance. Leave 1.5 metres between yourself and others. - We strongly recommend wearing a mask in situations where you cannot physically distance. A full list of COVID-19 testing clinics is available at the following link, or people can visit their GP: https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectio//Pages/clinics.aspx.

05.01.2022 Update on the use of MASKS .... for patients, carers, visitors

04.01.2022 This week is National Volunteer Week and were proud of our volunteers, who work tirelessly to support our communities during what has been an extraordinarily challenging year for all Australians. One of our volunteers, Margaret, shares her experience of volunteering at Calvary. "Before I retired, I decided that I would volunteer time to an organisation that worked in direct contact with people; one that offered services to people who needed help to continue to live their li...ves to the fullest extent possible, to the very end of their lives. In researching organisations that filled that criteria, I discovered the palliative care program at Calvary Hospital, Kogarah. The program ticked many boxes. Volunteers are not a disconnected part of the health care team who work in the palliative program; we work directly with people who are facing the end of their lives; the palliative care ethos is to treat the whole person, not just the disease and the work load is no more than the volunteer can cope with. I was reassured to know that no-one is connected to a patient without undergoing thorough training and that a lot of thought is given by the volunteer manager to placement of volunteer and patient before contact is made. I have been visiting home-based palliative care patients for two years. I offer foot or hand massage something I had no experience with, but the volunteer program gave me the skills and confidence to try, - sometimes there is a lot of talking, but mostly I just need to listen. Regardless of the length of time of the visits, I have always come away feeling that I have learned so much from the experience; listening to their life stories, enhances my life." 02.01.2022 Today is Anzac Day, when we remember the men and women who served their countries in war, and those who died in the service of their country. This Anzac Day we are observing COVID-19 social distancing and honouring our Anzacs with live telecasts and standing at dawn in our driveways. We give thanks to those who made the supreme sacrifice for us in time of war. We pray that the offering of their lives may not have been in vain. Today, we dedicate ourselves to the cause of jus...tice, freedom and peace; and for the wisdom and strength to build a better world. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, We will remember them. Lest we forget. Stay safe, stay at home, and stand at dawn. #StandAtDawn #ANZACATHOME
