25.01.2022 Today is International Nurses Day and the World Health Organisation has declared 2020, International Year of Nurses and Midwives with the theme: ‘Nursing A Voice to Lead: Nursing the World to Health’. The declaration comes at a very apt time when the world has been shaken by COVID-19. We would like to acknowledge the significant contribution of all our midwives and nurses, you truly are heros. Thank you to two of our featured local heroes, Elizabeth Bishop and Shannon Davis... share their thoughts below about about what nursing means. Given the current situation with COVID-19, do you have any stories of ingenuity, support, compassion and kindness? "The magnificent team I work within have been providing lots of reassurance to women during the COVID-19 preparations. To reduce hospital presentations, outpatient appointments have been undertaken via Zoom and in women’s homes. Parent education classes have also been successfully run via Zoom with couples still being able to connect and make plans as a group of new parents to get together after they have all given birth and the crisis has settled". Elizabeth Bishop, Clinical Nurse Consultant, Birth Centre, Calvary Bruce Public What inspired you to become a nurse? "I have been an Emergency Department nurse for approx. 14 years and have loved every bit of it. I have a loving caring nature and love to be around people, hence I chose this profession. I have known since I was in grade 5 at school where we had to draw a picture of what we wanted to be when we grow up, mine was a nurse holding a huge syringe. I believe it all stemmed from my mother and aunty who were both nurses". Shannon Davis, Acting Clinical Nurse Consultant, Emergency Dept, Calvary Bruce Public To find out more about Shannon and Elizabeth visit www.calvarynurses.org.au

25.01.2022 This week is National Volunteer Week and we're proud of our 1,124 volunteers, who work tirelessly to support our communities during what has been an extraordinarily challenging year for all Australians. Our volunteers cannot attend our usual National Volunteer Week celebration events this year due to COVID-19 restrictions; however our Volunteer Managers have gone above and beyond to create innovative ways for our volunteer communities to stay connected with each other, and fo...r us to say thank you while we are apart. Jacob, pictured far right, says that "Volunteering at Calvary Hospital Kogarah has been an incredible journey. It is without a doubt one of the most insightful experiences I have experienced throughout my life. I started my volunteer work in June 2018 assisting the physiotherapists in the Palliative Care gym. From the very first moment I walked into the gym, I absolutely fell in love with the place. Thank you to Jacob and all our volunteers for your passion, commitment and dedication. 22.01.2022 Has there ever been a more important time to ask, R U OK?, and to progress the conversation if it isn’t? Today is R U OK? Day and we are all being asked to learn what to say if someone in our life says they are not OK. This year’s theme ‘There’s more to say after R U OK?’ focusses on building our confidence and skills so to help us know how to navigate a conversation with someone in our life who might be struggling.... We don’t have to be experts, but by knowing what to say when someone says they're not OK we can show we care and genuinely help someone access appropriate support long before they’re in crisis. That conversation could change, or even save, their life. By asking, listening without judgement, encouraging action and checking in, you can help someone you care about through a tough time. Be part of the conversation - find out more at https://www.ruok.org.au/how-to-ask R U OK?

21.01.2022 This week, 24-30 May 2020, is National Palliative Care Week. The theme is Palliative Care: It’s more than you think. Explore stories from our people across hospital, aged and community care services who are continuing to provide palliative and end of life care with creativity and compassion through the COVID-19 pandemic. 20.01.2022 Today is R U OK? Day and we encourage you to trust the signs that someone may be struggling with life and ask them 'R U OK?'. A recent national survey conducted by R U OK? revealed that 63% of people are not confident they know the signs that someone may be struggling with life and 41% hadn't asked someone if they were OK, because they weren't sure they knew the signs. However, the good news is that 49% believe they'd be more confident starting a conversation if they knew the... signs. Our very own Dan Price (pictured left) is a national Ambassador for R U OK? and will be travelling Australia this week and in October to share the R U OK? message to help others, following his own R U OK? experience. To find out more about how to trust your gut and start a conversation that could change a life, visit www.ruok.org.au Pictured: Dan Price (left) Martin Bowles, National CEO and Heidi McCowan, National Manager, Workplace Health and Safety (right). #ruok

19.01.2022 During NAIDOC Week 2020 (8-15 November) celebrations are held across Australia each year to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, who have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. The 2020 NAIDOC Week theme Always Was, Always Will Be acknowledges that hundreds of Nations and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islan...der cultures covered this continent. All were managing the land - the biggest estate on earth - to sustainably provide for their future. As part of Calvary’s own journey of reconciliation, we commissioned Thomas Croft, a Barngarla man, born in Whyalla, South Australia, to create a design to remind us of the centrality of the importance of reconciliation, community and care. The image reminds us that we heal when we celebrate our First Peoples as a river offering life to our communities.

18.01.2022 With the COVID-19 situation continuing to improve in the ACT, we are further easing visitation restrictions at Calvary Bruce Public Hospital. From tomorrow, 3 June 2020, we are allowing two visitors per patient to visit each day, with one visitor only at a time. For babies and children, one parent or carer may be present at all times, and an additional one visitor may visit for up to one hour each day. Your safety remains our primary responsibility. Screening questions and te...mperature checks for all visitors and staff will continue. Social/physical distancing of 1.5 metres separation will still be required. We are pleased to be able to take this next step in easing restrictions, and thank patients and visitors for continuing to follow the directions of staff. Please remember to use the hand sanitiser stations at the entrance and throughout the hospital.

18.01.2022 Congratulations to Kathy Coonan, who was awarded Midwife of the Year in the ACT 2020 Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards. Kathy, a Neonatal Midwife at Calvary Public Hospital Bruce, was nominated for the Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Award for her dedication to her career of providing babies, mothers and families the best care during a challenging time in their life. A role model for staff to aspire to, Kathy began her midwifery career in Canberra in 1983 and was a mem...ber of the team that established the Newborn and Parent Support Service at The Canberra Hospital in the mid-1990s, the program to this day allows premature babies to be discharged earlier with skilled neonatal clinicians caring for the family in their home. I come from a family of nurses. My sister and my mother were my inspiration and I always wanted to be a midwife and help women and their babies. Caring for premature and sick babies and helping their parents through a very difficult time is what motivates me to do my best every single day in my job.

18.01.2022 When was the last time you had a diabetes test? A recent study found that of the 34% of patients who had diabetes, 5% had silent, undiagnosed type 2 diabetes that was only detected after they were admitted to hospital. This week, during National Diabetes Week, book in with your local GP for an assessment.

17.01.2022 Today is Dying to Know Day. This year more than ever we’ve learned about the importance of staying connected and having early conversations about living and dying. When those close to us understand what we value most it can help them to support our choices when we approach the end of our life. This is a conversation that can begin at any time and continue as our needs change over time. You can read more about Dying to Know Day and some online events at https://bit.ly/2DLkoCo

16.01.2022 Today is World Hand Hygiene Day and a timely reminder that washing your hands can help save lives. Washing your hands with soap and water for 40-60 seconds or using an alcohol based hand sanitiser for 20-30 seconds can prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other viruses and bacteria including colds and flu. Hand Hygiene is one of the most effective actions to reduce the spread of pathogens and prevent infections, including the COVID-19 virus.... You can play a critical role in fighting COVID-19 by adopting frequent hand hygiene as part of your day-to-day practices. Wash your hands often throughout the day to prevent the spread. 12.01.2022 Across our Calvary hospitals we would normally have around 1123 volunteers assisting us with a range of activities. Things like pruning the hedges or roses, putting together document packs, offering a snack in oncology; there are many ways that this dedicated group assist us to provide care to our patients and their families. Unfortunately with the COVID-19 restrictions in place, this group has not been able to continue as usual, and we miss them dearly. We miss the intangibl...e way they help us each day, but mostly we miss their smiles and their friendship. We miss their extraordinary range of personalities, their diverse skills and life experiences. We know our patients miss them, and we know that they are missing each other. We have put in place several mechanisms for volunteers to keep in touch with us and their peers, and we hope that over the coming months the valued connections that have been made will remain. We look forward to the time that we will be able to welcome back this effervescent group, and continue to offer the highest quality patient care, supported by our most valued volunteer friends.

12.01.2022 Today is Global Handwashing Day and this year’s theme, Hand Hygiene for All highlights the importance of handwashing. The COVID-19 pandemic provides a stark reminder that one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of viruses is also one of the simplest: hand hygiene, especially handwashing with soap and warm water for 20 seconds. Don’t forget to wash your hands today with soap and water to stop the spread of viruses.... #GlobalHandWashingDay #HandHygieneforAll

12.01.2022 Imagine going to sleep with perfect eyesight, and waking up the next day blind. People might not associate diabetes with eye health, but as Australian of the Year Dr James Muecke explains, this disease has far reaching and serious consequences. The good news? 10.01.2022 As Easter approaches, we find ourselves and our world in a very different place from previous years. For many of us, Easter is usually an opportunity to travel, visit and be with our loved ones. While this year, restrictions mean we cannot visit our loved ones in person, we can take the opportunity to reach out and be present at this time by making a phone call, sending an email or SMS message and/or putting a card in the post. Such acts of kindness can have a big impact on... reducing the effects of social isolation, particularly at this time. We thank our staff who will be working to keep the people in our care connected and safe this Easter, and remind everyone to help us by following our directions. Easter is a time for hope and new beginnings. Together, we can reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection and keep Calvary a safe and healing place for all.

07.01.2022 It was a long journey in 1885 from the dark slums of nineteenth century industrial England to the sunny shores and oppressive heat of Sydney. Six pioneering Sisters immediately set to work nursing the sick, running a soup kitchen, a night refuge, a school for the visually impaired, a parish school and providing social services to those in need. Soon they would establish the first of many hospitals on our shores. These were the indomitable women of the Sisters of the Little Co...mpany of Mary who’s pioneering spirit of being for others started an approach to caring for the sick, the dying and those in need that was to grow and expand across the country. We are Calvary Health Care. Today, we celebrate 135 years since the Sisters sailed into Sydney, and the legacy they have left us all.

03.01.2022 It is a great pleasure to facilitate the Health 2040 Taskforce Report released today. The report is the result of a consultation process that took more than a year and involved around 40 health professionals and consumers, to identify near-term reforms that would underpin the sustainable future of our healthcare system. It outlines steps to improve health outcomes and the ways in which professional self-interest and political inertia may create barriers to reform, and offers ...a range of ‘quick wins’ and 10-year timeframe recommendations. We have taken a pragmatic approach to this task, as we recognised there are some fundamentals in the Australian healthcare system that make it one of the best health systems in the world. These fundamentals are Medicare and the mix of public and private sectors delivered across Commonwealth, State and Territory Governments and private sector providers. Health reform is hard and will take time. If you look across the world, any significant reform takes a minimum of 10 years. We need all parts of the sector and parliamentarians to leave self-interest at the door and sit down and work on ensuring our health care system remains one of the best in the world.

03.01.2022 With the stress COVID-19 has placed on everyone's lives, it’s now more important than ever to look after your overall health and wellbeing. 03.01.2022 All Hallows Eve (31 Oct), or Hallowe'en, is the night before All Saints Day (1 Nov) and All Souls Day (2 Nov). These are days to honour the saints and our own loved ones who have passed. Some ways to honour them are to share stories and memories, light a candle, visit a grave or memorial site or to say a prayer. Let’s make Halloween more than lollies and witches hats. Let's make it a time to remember and honour.

02.01.2022 What do you see when you plunge the depths of Stuart Clues’ moody depiction of Lake Mackintosh, in Tasmania’s rugged west? The artwork means many different things to the mental health consumers who chose it. Art has the ability to ease anxiety, stress and depression, and to distract and quiet the mind. The large acrylic canvass is the end result of a project that began with a family donation, and then enlisted the generous support of the landscape artist, who essentially gif...ted his talent and time to the cause. 01.01.2022 Today is Anzac Day, when we remember the men and women who served their countries in war, and those who died in the service of their country. This Anzac Day we are observing COVID-19 social distancing and honouring our Anzacs with live telecasts and standing at dawn in our driveways. We give thanks to those who made the supreme sacrifice for us in time of war. We pray that the offering of their lives may not have been in vain. Today, we dedicate ourselves to the cause of jus...tice, freedom and peace; and for the wisdom and strength to build a better world. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, We will remember them. Lest we forget. Stay safe, stay at home, and stand at dawn. #StandAtDawn #ANZACATHOME
