25.01.2022 Keeping the celebrations going, our Occupational Therapy (OT) team set up a fantastic awareness raising table in the front foyer. With lots of information to share and OT aides to have a look at, the table was a a great initiative to spread the word about the difference that OT can make, assisting people to 'Rebuild, Recover, and Reengage'. #ThisisOT Team work
24.01.2022 The theme for Pastoral Care week this year is Collaborative Healthcare: Pastoral Carers Complete the Picture, and an image that comes to mind is the metaphor of a thread. It is an apt illustration of how Pastoral Care Practitioners, through their presence, advocacy and building of relationships with the patients, families and staff facilitates an approach to healthcare that is holistic, non-judgmental, fosters understanding and ensures that what happens during the hospital ...experience is absolutely, patient centred. For the patient and their loved ones, the challenges of disease and uncertainty can bring with it, anxiety and distress, and like a patchwork quilt, each contact with a Pastoral Care Practitioner can be likened to stitching together a piece of fabric to support the central design - the patient. Those of us that work in healthcare, contribute to this patchwork quilt, each with our own thread, to convey comfort and healing for those who receive their skills and care. The presence of the Pastoral Care Practitioner is also the thread that connects the patient with the God of their understanding or spirituality, when they have forgotten how to pray or connect with what is meaningful. Patients at end of life may consider to re-member with the Divine or to find peace, as they prepare to transition. The Pastoral Care Practitioner as a thread, is present to assist with however the patient seeks to navigate that space and time. This process is a collaboration with the patient and others, and underpins the Mission and Values of Calvary. Pastoral Care Week 2020 (Pictured: Tree of Life quilt design - Catbird Quilt Studio)
23.01.2022 Late last week we held several staff events for the dual celebrations of our first birthday, and our belated Mary Potter Awards. Every November, across all Calvary sites and services nationally, we celebrate Venerable Mary Potter’s Birthday. The occasion is where we honour staff who have served Calvary for many years, and those whose peers have nominated them for recognition for outstanding service to our patients and exemplary demonstration of our Calvary values. With our N...ovember celebrations postponed due to Covid-19 restrictions, we were thrilled to be able to celebrate this special occasion over breakfast, lunch, and dinner events, to ensure that staff on all shifts could be included. Congratulations to the individuals and groups who received this recognition at the celebration. We thank them wholeheartedly for their dedication, commitment and service to our mission.
23.01.2022 Happy World Kindness Day! A kind word, small act of kindness, or even just a smile can make such a difference to someone’s happiness. When someone’s kindness or helpful gesture redirects your attitude, and then your better attitude rubs off on another, and so on, and so on - this is the Butterfly Effect. Throughout World Kindness Week, we have had these colourful butterflies available for patients, visitors and staff to write a message of kindness, a thank you note, a quote ...- anything that might uplift someone walking past who will read. The butterflies were then put up in the foyers of our hospitals and state office, as well as at Flora McDonald Retirement Community. There were some beautiful messages written, and we thank all those who got involved. The butterflies will still be available today, so feel free to add your own touch if you are at one of the sites today. See more
22.01.2022 It was a long journey in 1885 from the dark slums of nineteenth century industrial England to the sunny shores and oppressive heat of Sydney. Six pioneering Sisters immediately set to work nursing the sick, running a soup kitchen, a night refuge, a school for the visually impaired, a parish school and providing social services to those in need. Soon they would establish the first of many hospitals on our shores. These were the indomitable women of the Sisters of the Little Co...mpany of Mary who’s pioneering spirit of being for others started an approach to caring for the sick, the dying and those in need that was to grow and expand across the country. We are Calvary Health Care. Today, we celebrate 135 years since the Sisters sailed into Sydney, and the legacy they have left us all.
22.01.2022 As we continue to celebrate OT Week this week, today we share a note from Chris (with permission) on how OT has given him his zest for life back, as part of his ‘Rebuild, Recover, Reengage’. After a month in hospital with most of my time spent in ICU, I was upset when I was told that I needed to spend an extra seven days in rehab. My whole mood was low as I wanted to go home to my wife, children and dogs. The transfer from Connery Ward to Rehab was emotionally draining as ...I knew all of the staff so well and didn’t want to start from fresh again. Then I met Hayley (my Occupational therapist). What an amazing woman! Within no time at all, she had me smiling, laughing, and actually looking forward to my last week of rehab. Hayley correctly saw that I needed to converse with other patients and booked me into the breakfast club. Hayley also took me to the café downstairs and bought my first real coffee in five weeks. Having this service and support has sparked my enthusiasm in life and I quickly grasped my physio program and spent most of my free time walking and exercising. Not ever having had interactions with an OT in my past, I can clearly see the true and wonderful work they provide. Yes we can all be physically improved but in my case, Hayley has given me my zest for life back and I haven’t stopped laughing and smiling since. Lots of love and respect, Chris. #ThisisOT Inpatient Rehabilitation
21.01.2022 When preparing for surgery, the handwashing (surgical scrub) procedure that surgeons and staff undergo initially takes a full 5 minutes, with shorter washes in between each patient. They meticulously scrub their fingers, knuckles, palms, backs of hands, wrists, and forearms with clinical-grade soaps, detergents or alcohol solution. This ensures that before putting on gloves, hands are as clean as possible to reduce the risk of infection for patients. While we don’t have to go to this extent with our handwashing, it is a good reminder on Global Handwashing Day to include all areas of our hands and wrists when we wash our hands, for around as long as it takes to sing ‘Happy birthday’ twice. For more information, check out: https://www.who.int/gpsc/clean_hands_protection/en/
21.01.2022 Late last week we celebrated the graduating nurses (and midwife) from the 2020 Graduate Nurse Transition Program! 42 participants from across the Calvary SA hospital sites received their certificates, having completed their 12-month program during the challenging COVID times. All but one graduate (who is moving interstate) will remain working with Calvary, further bolstering our team of highly trained, caring staff. We wish the graduates all the best in their careers, and kn...ow that they will continue to offer high quality care to each and every one of their patients. Please note: Applications for the 2021 mid-year GNTP Program will open soon, so keep an eye out on this page for further details soon.
21.01.2022 An important and exciting day today, with many of the residents at Calvary Flora McDonald Retirement Community in Cowandilla receiving their COVID-19 vaccinations. These residents are some of the first people in the country to be offered this vaccine - an important way for them to stay safe. While vaccination is a personal choice, Calvary strongly encourages COVID-19 vaccination of residents and staff. We have been working with residents, their families and doctors to ensure ...an informed choice. Pattie was one of the first residents in line for her vaccination this morning. I didn’t even feel a thing she laughed to her friends. Extra staff were on-hand to monitor the residents after their vaccine while they happily enjoyed a cup of tea and cupcake. Calvary staff will soon be offered the vaccine too, in line with the advice from SA Health.
21.01.2022 Premier Steven Marshall today announced a lifting of the current restrictions on non-urgent surgical procedures. Calvary SA hospitals will be ready to proceed with all procedures from Monday 23 November 2020. In the interest of protecting the health and wellbeing of our patients, staff and specialist partners, the restrictions introduced on 15 November 2020 will remain in place across all Calvary sites until further notice. These include: No visitors permitted to enter a Ca...lvary South Australia facility until further notice. (Special exceptions are in place for paediatric patients, as well as for people who are receiving palliative care or who are at end of life.) Face masks will be worn by every staff member and specialist at all times while on site; and we encourage the public to do so too. Screening of all patients, exempt visitors (as above), staff, and specialists will remain in place Reminder: If you are feeling unwell in the lead up to your procedure or appointment; please stay at home, advise your specialist or the hospital by phone, and get tested for COVID-19.
20.01.2022 Today on the 11th day at the 11th hour we honour the memory of those who died or who were injured in wars and armed conflicts. On this day 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare. More than 330,000 Australians served overseas during this time and more than 60,000 died. One of the first flowers to bloom on the devastated battlefields of Flanders was the Red Poppy. Its bright red colour symbolised the blood shed duri...ng the horrific conflict, but also the hope of new life. The presence of these resilient bright red blooms on broken ground lead to the poppy becoming the symbol of remembrance day. Lest we forget.

17.01.2022 Calvary is proud to be part of the My Home Hospital program, a free public hospital-level service that delivers medical care to patients in the comfort and privacy of their own homes. The Wellbeing SA service, delivered in partnership with Calvary and Medibank, is available for treatment for conditions such as kidney or respiratory infections, cellulitis and deep-vein thrombosis. GPs and specialists can now refer public patients with specific health conditions to the free pr...ogram. An article recently published in The Adelaide Advertiser* features one of the first patients, Brenton Richardson, pictured with Registered Nurse Catherine Parker. Brenton has the skin condition cellulitis, which first appeared about five years ago and has received hospital treatment for it. When it recently flared up in his leg and an ambulance took him to Flinders Medical Centre, he was told he was eligible to receive treatment including an intravenous drip and medications in his Edwardstown home. It’s much better than being in hospital and it also frees up their beds, which must be a good thing. I’d much rather be at home than in hospital, Mr Richardson, 51, said. The rollout follows three pilot programs that treated hundreds of people, easing pressure on busy hospital EDs. SA Health and Wellbeing Minister Stephen Wade said patients did not always have to be physically in hospital to receive the care they need. Wellbeing SA Chief Executive, Lyn Dean, said this new service delivered in partnership with Calvary and Medibank is available for a range of treatments where in-home care is considered appropriate. People who need treatment for conditions such as kidney or respiratory infections, cellulitis or deep vein thrombosis could be eligible for the program. During treatment, My Home Hospital doctors and nurses will visit patients in their home as required to provide the care they need in person and via video call. Using remote monitoring technology, doctors and nurses will also be able to stay in touch with patients at any time and track clinical observations such as blood pressure, pulse and temperature in real time. 17.01.2022 Across Australia, an estimated 2.65 million Australians provide a staggering 42 million hours of unpaid care each week. National Carers Week, from October 11 to 17, is a time to recognise the enormous contribution made by the army of unpaid carers who provide care and support to a family member or friend with disability, mental health condition, chronic condition, terminal illness, an issue with alcohol or other drugs, or who are frail aged. Importantly, National Carer’s We...ek also gives carers a voice to be recognised and supported in what is often a role that is not always a choice. We applaud the commitment, courage and selflessness, and the spirit of being for others of carers everywhere. You can read carer’s stories on the National Carers Week 2020 website at https://carersweek.com.au/your-stories/
17.01.2022 Congratulations to the team at Calvary St Catherine’s Retirement Community as they embark on this exciting project!
16.01.2022 People living with diabetes face a number of challenges, and education is vital to equip nurses with the skills to support them. Calvary Adelaide’s own Diabetes Service provides education to assist patients to make informed lifestyle choices. The service encourages and enables patients with diabetes to take control of their own condition by integrating self-management into their daily lives. Education of staff is also vital, which is why earlier this week we held a Diabetes E...ducation Session. Staff heard from where several speakers, including a past patient who gave an insight into his first hand experience. This World Diabetes Day, we say a special thank you to all those nurses who make a difference in the lives of their patients each and every day. https://worlddiabetesday.org/
14.01.2022 Calvary wishes to advise patients and their loved ones that unfortunately a patient who attended the Dr Jones & Partners Medical Imaging clinic, located at the Calvary Adelaide Hospital site, has tested positive for COVID-19. The patient, who wore a mask and was screened for symptoms and temperature tested by our staff before entry, attended Jones & Partners for an appointment at 8.30am on Monday. Calvary has immediately put into action our COVID-19 response plan which invol...ves working with SA Health to conduct thorough contact tracing to ensure any person identified a close contact is notified to get tested and isolate for 14 days. A deep clean of the Jones & Partners clinic was conducted overnight on Tuesday and has been determined safe to resume receiving patients. The safety of our patients, their loved ones and our staff is of paramount importance. Please contact the hospital if you have any questions or concerns about the safety measures we have in place. Thank you for following the rules and helping us to keep everybody safe.
14.01.2022 Specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Scott Brumby from Wakefield Orthopaedic Clinic is presenting a free patient education seminar on knee replacement surgery. If you have been suffering from knee pain, and are not sure whether surgery is right for you, then this seminar may be able to help.
12.01.2022 NAIDOC Week 2020 (8-15 November) sees celebrations held across Australia to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, who have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. The 2020 NAIDOC Week theme Always Was, Always Will Be acknowledges that hundreds of Nations and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures cov...ered this continent. All were managing the land - the biggest estate on earth - to sustainably provide for their future. As part of Calvary’s own journey of reconciliation we commissioned Thomas Croft, a Barngarla man born in Whyalla, to create a design to remind us of the centrality of the importance of reconciliation, community and care. The image reminds us that we heal when we celebrate our First Peoples as a river offering life to our communities.
10.01.2022 Calvary Adelaide Hospital is pleased to announce an easing of visitor restrictions, consistent with the latest advice from SA Health. From 27 November 2020, one (1) visitor per patient each day will be allowed. Visitors will be required to undertake screening before entering the hospital, wear a facemask at all times while on site, and limit their visit to the patient’s room only. Other restrictions, requirements and special exceptions are outlined below. ... We understand that visitor restrictions can be difficult for patients and their families. We are pleased to be able to take this next step in easing restrictions and will continue to ease restrictions, consistent with SA Health advice, as soon as it is safe to do so. What does this mean for patients and their families? Any one (1) visitor will be permitted to visit each day. From 27 November 2020, any one (1) visitor per patient will be allowed to visit until further notice. Exceptions for paediatrics patients. Admitted babies and children (0-17 years) may have one (1) parent/carer present at all times For patients who are at end of life, there may be exceptions to visitation restrictions. If you or a loved one are receiving palliative care or are at end of life, please contact the hospital to discuss whether an exceptional visit can be arranged. Our staff and visitors will be required to wear a facemask. Consistent with SA Health advice, visitors and staff will be required to wear a surgical facemask at all times. Where a visitor does not provide their own mask, or the mask does not meet requirements, Calvary will provide a mask upon entry. Visitors and staff will be screened and have their temperature checked by staff before entry. Fever is one of the symptoms of COVID-19 and any person with a temperature (greater than 37.5 degrees Celsius) presents a potential risk of transmitting the virus to others. Hand hygiene is important. Remember to please use the hand sanitiser stations at the entrance and throughout the hospital regularly. We thank patients and family members for their support of our staff to manage the risk of infection to the people in our care. We will continue to keep you updated as SA Health advice changes. For up-to-date information for all patients and their loved ones, please visit Calvary’s COVID-19 updates site: www.calvarycoronavirusupdates.org.au We encourage patients and their loved ones to contact the hospital (8227 7000) with any questions or concerns about the safety measures Calvary has in place.
09.01.2022 In the midst of all the challenges of moving toward end-of-life, hospice patients are often more deeply conscious of the value of relationships, of faith, and of the importance of the present moment. Yet, sometimes it is difficult to express in words what they want someone else to receive. The Fra Angelico Creative Arts program provides another means of expression for people who are experiencing the mixed emotions of transitioning into end-of-life. Each person on the multi-di...sciplinary team caring for a patient in hospice contributes a valuable piece in the picture of the patient’s final days. So, too, do the significant others in that person’s life, like family, friends, pets and faith community. Pastoral Care provides spiritual and emotional support for patients and families in this context. Patients can express their feelings in colour, shape and texture, and if they choose, they and their families may design, create and share together. It provides a safe space where they can connect, remember, face the oncoming changes and renew their courage. The Fra Angelico Creative Arts program is supported by The Mary Potter Foundation, and is available to patients at both Calvary North Adelaide and Central Districts Hospitals. Pastoral Care Week 2020
09.01.2022 Occupational therapy supports people of all abilities to engage in activities they find meaningful, including leisure, self-care and productivity. As we celebrate OT Week this week, we will be sharing stories from our patients as they talk about the impact that occupational therapy has had in their lives and how they have been supported to ‘Rebuild, Recover, Reengage’. Elizabeth: I come in for sessions twice a week with Jessica my Occupational Therapist, after my stroke in A...ugust. I find the sessions marvellous and everyone is so patient with me. The encouragement and what it does for my confidence is the best thing! My OT works with me doing all sorts of things, like putting tiles in slots, opening and closing clothes pegs, twisting bolts etc. I have found that I have improved in many areas from these sessions, and some things are better now than before the stroke! My typing is much better as my fine motor abilities improve. Above all I am glad to be back playing the piano every day. Some days it might be only for 10 minutes, others for an hour. I am back to teaching my pupil and I am really looking forward to being able to do my recitals again at the retirement centre where I live. #ThisisOT - Outpatients
06.01.2022 Calvary has temporarily ceased all non-urgent surgical procedures in accordance with the SA Government’s Emergency (Stay at Home) Directive, released on Thursday morning. We have been working closely with our doctors and patients to inform them of any necessary postponements. The safety of our patients, their loved ones and our staff is of paramount importance, which is why - due to the rapidly changing COVID-19 situation in SA - we took the step to temporarily suspend gener...al visitation across all our Calvary SA sites from 11.59pm 15 November 2020 until further notice. Special exceptions remain in place for paediatrics patients, as well as for people who are receiving palliative care or who are at end of life. We encourage patients and their loved ones to contact the hospital (8227 7000) with any questions or concerns about the safety measures Calvary has in place.

05.01.2022 The Pastoral Care team is available for all patients and families at our Calvary SA hospitals. Every person has their own unique story and way of seeing and understanding life which is how they navigate their stay as a patient or carer. Pastoral Care in hospital is about providing space to listen to another as they reflect on what is important and sustains them during their time of illness. This space is referred to as spiritual care and completes the collaborative health ...care picture of care we provide at Calvary. Pastoral Care Week 2020
04.01.2022 As OT Week draws to a close, today we hear from Pat on the role that OT is playing to support her to ‘Rebuild, Recover, Reengage’. Pat: I found the questions that my OT Alison asked, helped me to identify what was happening with me. We worked through different activities like self-care and kitchen tasks to find that I had a particular challenge with depth perception. Our sessions are reassuring and makes me feel more confident as I understand more of what is going on. This understanding makes me feel that I am part of my own health care team. I have a role to play and I feel empowered as I know what I need to do alongside the medical investigations. #ThisisOT Acute Care
04.01.2022 Lots of colour was out and about today! Staff donned their craziest, loudest shirts to raise awareness and funds for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. #loudshirtday
03.01.2022 GNTP Coordinator Kristy Stapleton was the keynote speaker at Flinders University’s Final Year Nursing Careers Information Session this morning, as part of the lead up to recruitment for our Graduate Program. She provided some tips and tricks regarding the application process, special tips for applying to Calvary and what to consider, and - most excitingly - the first public announcement about our Regional Graduate Nurse Transition Program, which will see participants undertake training across Calvary SA’s hospitals, retirement communities and community care! Kristy and her colleagues will also speak to other universities in the lead up to applications opening for the 2021 program, so keep an eye out for further updates and announcements regarding recruitment and application.
03.01.2022 A recent lunchtime education session proved very popular with staff, as they gathered to hear Neurosurgeon Dr Santosh Poonnoose speak out about cranial surgery. The first in a series of neuro-focussed sessions, Dr Poonnoose gave an overview including: - The lobes of the brain and their function: gait, motor skills, speech etc. - Types of tumours and how they are removed.... - Imaging including CT scans and MRI, and how they are utilised in theatre. - Best practice post-operative care. By all accounts it was a very interesting and informative session, with Clinical Case Coordinators, Clinical Managers, and our Deputy Director of Clinical Services facilitating staff to attend by looking after the wards. More neuro-focussed education is planned for later in the year with the next session being presented by Dr McDonald on ‘Cauda Equina’.
02.01.2022 Earlier this week Calvary SA hospitals, retirement communities and Community Care came together to host more than 150 attendees at the first regional recruitment evening. Tables from each service and specialty were manned by General Managers, Clinical Managers and staff members - on hand to speak to attendees in a relaxed and informal setting. Feedback about the evening has been very positive, and we look forward to welcoming some new staff members to Calvary soon!
02.01.2022 Calvary Adelaide Hospital will be stopping all general visitation from 11.59pm 15 November 2020, in response to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) situation in South Australia rapidly changing. We have made this change in order to effectively manage the risk of infection and protect the health of patients, their friends and family members and staff. Calvary does not take this decision lightly. With SA Health reporting growing instances of community transmission of COVID-19 in Adelaid...e, we must introduce this measure to ensure the safest possible environment for the vulnerable people in our care. What does this mean for patients and their families? Calvary will be stopping all general visitation from 11.59pm 15 November 2020. This means that from midnight yesterday no general visitation will be permitted at the hospital until further notice. Exceptions for obstetrics and paediatrics patients. Admitted babies and children (0-17 years) may have one (1) parent/carer present at all times. For patients who are at end of life, there may be exceptions to visitation restrictions. If you or a loved one are receiving palliative care or are at end of life, please contact the hospital to discuss whether an exceptional visit can be arranged. Our staff will be wearing facemasks. Due to heightened risk, our staff will be required to wear a surgical facemask at all times. Any visitor who is permitted entry as a special exception will be required to wear a facemask at all times. Any person entering will be required to have their temperature checked by staff before entry. Fever is one of the symptoms of COVID-19 and any person with a temperature (greater than 37.5 degrees Celsius) presents a potential risk of transmitting the virus to others. To protect patients and staff from COVID-19 infection, we have had to act quickly. The cooperation of patients and family members in helping our staff manage the risk of infection to the people in our care has been excellent. We will continue to keep you updated as the COVID-19 situation evolves. For up-to-date information for all patients and their loved ones, please visit Calvary’s COVID-19 updates site regularly at: www.calvarycoronavirusupdates.org.au Please don’t hesitate to contact the hospital should you have any questions or would like more information. Thank you for your continued cooperation and understanding in this difficult time.

01.01.2022 Staff in the Emergency Department have commenced working through a new professional pathway for nurses. The program, developed by emergency nurse experts throughout 2020, will follow staff members through their entire journey of ED nursing - from novice through to expert (and leadership role as appropriate). It is an innovative and supportive way to develop our nurses in order to continue to provide the best care to our patients.
01.01.2022 A delicious way to celebrate the end of OT Week! Our Occupational Therapists have many skills, and now we know baking is also one of them. Thank you to the talented Elisha for creating this masterpiece to share with her colleagues. #thisisotweek
01.01.2022 We want to take a moment to publicly thank all of our wonderful housekeeping and cleaning staff, including those from Cirka, who have been going above and beyond to keep our staff, patients and visitors as safe as possible. In normal circumstances this group does an amazing job throughout all our Calvary sites, but with the extra cleaning requirements of COVID-19, they have stepped up even further! We truly appreciate everything that they do and thank them for undertaking this essential role.
