25.01.2022 Maxine Stewart liked what she saw when she moved into her new home at Calvary Ryde Residential Aged Care. Maxine was one of 80 Calvary Ryde residents who recently made the move ‘next door’ into the new, purpose-built facility. It may have only been a relatively short distance, but it was still a significant move for our residents and a major logistical exercise for staff. Happily all went exactly to plan, largely due to the care and effort of staff who went out of their way ...to make sure that our residents had a safe, comfortable and smooth transition. The move marked the completion of the first stage of a $60 million major redevelopment of Calvary Ryde Retirement Community, which will also include an additional 21 independent living units on the historic eight-hectare site in Sydney’s north-west. Read more about the move at https://bit.ly/2Fs5PoS and the redevelopment at www.calvaryryde.org.au.

22.01.2022 Yesterday, the NSW Chief Health Officer advised aged care providers in NSW that due to increased risk of infection in Victoria, any person who has visited Melbourne in the past 14 days will not be permitted to visit an aged care facility in NSW. Due to the potential risk of COVID-19 transmission, people who have travelled to or from Melbourne in the past 14 days will not be permitted to visit a Calvary NSW Residential Aged Care Facility. WebEx video call services are availabl...e if you are not able to visit a resident at this time. Please contact the facility directly to arrange a video call. Your safety remains our primary responsibility. Screening questions and temperature checks for all visitors and staff will continue. We will continue to monitor the situation in Victoria as well as NSW Health advice and lift restrictions when it is safe to do so. 22.01.2022 In good times and in bad, pastoral carers in Calvary’s hospitals, retirement communities and aged care services quietly go about their mission to care for patients’ and residents’ spiritual needs. It’s been especially challenging this year and never more important to find hope and meaning in daily life. The men and women in our pastoral care teams across the country are an important part of our holistic and interdisciplinary approach to care and during Pastoral Care Week (2...5-31 October) we celebrate their significant contribution. Glen Renton is an integral part of the care team at Calvary Ryde Retirement Community and shares a special connection with residents. It’s my job to make sure that their spiritual needs are met. I just want to make sure everyone’s okay, and they are enjoying life as they should. If I can make them smile for the day, I’ve done my job. You can read more about Glen’s story at https://bit.ly/2TkPcPg

21.01.2022 Today is Anzac Day, when we remember the men and women who served their countries in war, and those who died in the service of their country. This Anzac Day we are observing COVID-19 social distancing and honouring our Anzacs with live telecasts and standing at dawn in our driveways. We give thanks to those who made the supreme sacrifice for us in time of war. We pray that the offering of their lives may not have been in vain. Today, we dedicate ourselves to the cause of jus...tice, freedom and peace; and for the wisdom and strength to build a better world. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, We will remember them. Lest we forget. Stay safe, stay at home, and stand at dawn. #StandAtDawn #ANZACATHOME

20.01.2022 Earlier this month Calvary Muswellbrook Retirement Community residents were delighted to receive three enormous gift hampers from Malabar Coal. It was nice of them to think of us said Melinda Abell, Acting Manager. Malabar Coal Chairman Wayne Seabrook said the company was happy to provide some added comforts to those most at risk during the current crisis. ... When considering ways to we could help during this difficult period, the Muswellbrook Retirement Community sprung to mind as the perfect opportunity, said Malabar’s Community Manager, Donna McLaughlin. The hampers are a small gesture, but hopefully they provide the residents with a welcome distraction from some of the restrictions and reduced contact with family and friends. The residents received cards, board games and puzzles, handcraft activities, personal care products and writing compendiums, all of which will be used during this period and beyond to entertain the residents. We are delighted to see residents' enthusiastic participation in the additional activities. Our thanks to residents and their families for your continued support of the measures implemented by Calvary and the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

18.01.2022 Today is World Kindness Day! First launched in 1998 by The World Kindness Movement to create a kinder world by inspiring individuals and nations towards greater kindness. Calvary’s Venerable Mary Potter said, We may not have much to give, but we can give kind words, loving looks, cheerful smiles.... Brooke Jones, from the The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation agrees: As we celebrate World Kindness Day, look for ways to make kindness the norm in your daily life. World Kindness Day is a great day to begin building a new routine which means including intentional moments of kindness, laughter and delight. It also means taking a moment to enjoy and recognize when those things are happening. Kindness starts with one. One smile. One compliment. One cup of coffee. One conversation. #WorldKindnessDay

18.01.2022 Pupils from St Charles Primary School at Ryde put pen to paper recently to reach out and support residents at Calvary Ryde Retirement Community during the pandemic. 17.01.2022 Today on the 11th day at the 11th hour we honour the memory of those who died or who were injured in wars and armed conflicts. On this day 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare. More than 330,000 Australians served overseas during this time and more than 60,000 died. One of the first flowers to bloom on the devastated battlefields of Flanders was the Red Poppy. Its bright red colour symbolised the blood shed duri...ng the horrific conflict, but also the hope of new life. The presence of these resilient bright red blooms on broken ground lead to the poppy becoming the symbol of remembrance day. Lest we forget.

17.01.2022 In order to effectively manage the risk of COVID-19 infection and protect the health of our residents, their family members and staff, Calvary is introducing routine screening and temperature checks. This will be for all people, including staff, upon entry at all retirement communities, from 2 April 2020. We thank you for your cooperation in keeping the people in our care safe. 17.01.2022 What do you see when you plunge the depths of Stuart Clues’ moody depiction of Lake Mackintosh, in Tasmania’s rugged west? The artwork means many different things to the mental health consumers who chose it. Art has the ability to ease anxiety, stress and depression, and to distract and quiet the mind. The large acrylic canvass is the end result of a project that began with a family donation, and then enlisted the generous support of the landscape artist, who essentially gif...ted his talent and time to the cause. 15.01.2022 Across Australia, an estimated 2.65 million Australians provide a staggering 42 million hours of unpaid care each week. National Carers Week, from October 11 to 17, is a time to recognise the enormous contribution made by the army of unpaid carers who provide care and support to a family member or friend with disability, mental health condition, chronic condition, terminal illness, an issue with alcohol or other drugs, or who are frail aged. Importantly, National Carer’s We...ek also gives carers a voice to be recognised and supported in what is often a role that is not always a choice. We applaud the commitment, courage and selflessness, and the spirit of being for others of carers everywhere. You can read carer’s stories on the National Carers Week 2020 website at https://carersweek.com.au/your-stories/

15.01.2022 During NAIDOC Week 2020 (8-15 November) celebrations are held across Australia each year to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, who have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. The 2020 NAIDOC Week theme Always Was, Always Will Be acknowledges that hundreds of Nations and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islan...der cultures covered this continent. All were managing the land - the biggest estate on earth - to sustainably provide for their future. As part of Calvary’s own journey of reconciliation, we commissioned Thomas Croft, a Barngarla man, born in Whyalla, South Australia, to create a design to remind us of the centrality of the importance of reconciliation, community and care. The image reminds us that we heal when we celebrate our First Peoples as a river offering life to our communities.

15.01.2022 Our patients and staff are our top priority, and as such we have made some changes to visitor activity at our sites. We appreciate your support during this time as we continue to care for you and your loved ones, while slowing the spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus). 14.01.2022 It was a long journey in 1885 from the dark slums of nineteenth century industrial England to the sunny shores and oppressive heat of Sydney. Six pioneering Sisters immediately set to work nursing the sick, running a soup kitchen, a night refuge, a school for the visually impaired, a parish school and providing social services to those in need. Soon they would establish the first of many hospitals on our shores. These were the indomitable women of the Sisters of the Little Co...mpany of Mary who’s pioneering spirit of being for others started an approach to caring for the sick, the dying and those in need that was to grow and expand across the country. We are Calvary Health Care. Today, we celebrate 135 years since the Sisters sailed into Sydney, and the legacy they have left us all.

13.01.2022 In these uncertain times, community spirit and kindness can help us get through these challenging events. 12.01.2022 Today is Global Handwashing Day and this year’s theme, Hand Hygiene for All highlights the importance of handwashing. The COVID-19 pandemic provides a stark reminder that one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of viruses is also one of the simplest: hand hygiene, especially handwashing with soap and warm water for 20 seconds. Don’t forget to wash your hands today with soap and water to stop the spread of viruses.... #GlobalHandWashingDay #HandHygieneforAll

11.01.2022 Imagine going to sleep with perfect eyesight, and waking up the next day blind. People might not associate diabetes with eye health, but as Australian of the Year Dr James Muecke explains, this disease has far reaching and serious consequences. The good news? Type 2 Diabetes is preventable if we are all up for the challenge.... https://www.canberratimes.com.au//no-more-sweet-talking-/ (Image with thanks to Matt Turner - SA Weekend)

11.01.2022 As Easter approaches, we find ourselves and our world in a very different place from previous years. For many of us, Easter is usually an opportunity to travel, visit and be with our loved ones. While this year, restrictions mean we cannot visit our loved ones in person, we can take the opportunity to reach out and be present at this time by making a phone call, sending an email or SMS message and/or putting a card in the post. Such acts of kindness can have a big impact on... reducing the effects of social isolation, particularly at this time. At Calvary, we are close to introducing standardised video conferencing technologies and staff training to help our residents to connect with their friends and family in new ways. We thank our staff who will be working to keep the people in our care connected and safe this Easter, and remind everyone to help us by following our directions. Easter is a time for hope and new beginnings. Together, we can reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection and keep Calvary a safe and healing place for all.

11.01.2022 Today is World Hand Hygiene Day and a timely reminder that washing your hands can help save lives. Washing your hands with soap and water for 40-60 seconds or using an alcohol based hand sanitiser for 20-30 seconds can prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other viruses and bacteria including colds and flu. Hand Hygiene is one of the most effective actions to reduce the spread of pathogens and prevent infections, including the COVID-19 virus.... You can play a critical role in fighting COVID-19 by adopting frequent hand hygiene as part of your day-to-day practices. Wash your hands often throughout the day to prevent the spread. 10.01.2022 Today is Dying to Know Day. This year more than ever we’ve learned about the importance of staying connected and having early conversations about living and dying. This is a conversation that can begin at any time and continue as our needs change over time. You can read more about Dying to Know Day and some online events at https://bit.ly/2DLkoCo

It is without a doubt one of the most insightful experiences I have experienced throughout my life. I started my volunteer work in June 2018 assisting the physiotherapists in the Palliative Care gym. 07.01.2022 Congratulations to Eileen McDonell (nee Greene), born in Coonamble, New South Wales, who turned 100 years old on Monday 2 March 2020. In 1942, Eileen joined the war effort, signing up with the Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force (WAAAF) in Sydney. Posted to Richmond Air Force base she worked first as a store keeper, then equipment assistant. In February 1942 she was promoted to Corporal and twelve months later, to Sergeant. She recalls many enjoyable outings in Sydney with... her fellow WAAAFs, including sailing on the harbour and volunteering with the Red Cross. Many of the young pilots who passed through Richmond were on their way overseas and she remembers the heartache of knowing that many of them would never return. A later posting saw Eileen sharing quarters in a requisitioned mansion, Hopewood House in Darling Point on Sydney Harbour. Along with other servicewomen who had volunteered with the Red Cross, she met the first of the ships carrying repatriated prisoners of war from the Japanese camps and learned from them about the horror of the conditions endured by so many. After transitioning in 1946, Eileen worked in various clerical jobs before raising a family. Her positive attitude to life, sense of humour and interest in other people have carried her through to her 100th year. Eileen joined us at Calvary Flora McDonald in June 2017. Eileen celebrated her day starting with a lunch at the Women’s Country Club in Adelaide and was joined by her family. Eileen was picked up at Calvary Flora McDonald and escorted to her birthday function in a White 1950 Jaguar. Happy Birthday Eileen.

07.01.2022 Today is International Nurses Day and the 200th Anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale - the world's most famous nurse. A writer of some 200 books, pamphlets and articles, her legacy lives on in the fields of social reform, statistics and, of course, nursing. Born into an upper class family in Florence and named after the city, she rejected familial and societal expectations of her to answer the call. Florence believed that nursing was in a divine calling. This he...avily influenced her understanding of the service of nursing, which was very much in the vein of what we now call ‘mission’. To be a fellow worker with God is the highest aspiration of which we can conceive man capable. Florence Nightingale. Happy International Nurses Day. 05.01.2022 An initiative to connect some of Calvary’s Newcastle aged care residents to pen pals at a local primary school during the Covid-19 lockdown won hearts and minds when it featured on The Project on Sunday night. The targeted letter writing initiative prompted the residents, many of whom have dementia, to reminisce and re-engage fine motor skills. Importantly, it also gave them purpose. Residents from Calvary Nazareth Retirement Community at Belmont, where part of the program wa...s filmed, and Calvary St Joseph’s Retirement Community at Sandgate participated in the Pen Pals program, which was run by the University of Newcastle’s Department of Occupational Therapy. Clinical Nurse Consultant with Calvary Retirement Communities Colin McDonnell helped create the program in a collaboration with the University and Lecturer Dr Kylie Wales. 02.01.2022 Has there ever been a more important time to ask, R U OK?, and to progress the conversation if it isn’t? Today is R U OK? Day and we are all being asked to learn what to say if someone in our life says they are not OK. This year’s theme ‘There’s more to say after R U OK?’ focusses on building our confidence and skills so to help us know how to navigate a conversation with someone in our life who might be struggling.... We don’t have to be experts, but by knowing what to say when someone says they're not OK we can show we care and genuinely help someone access appropriate support long before they’re in crisis. That conversation could change, or even save, their life. By asking, listening without judgement, encouraging action and checking in, you can help someone you care about through a tough time.
