25.01.2022 In the midst of all the challenges of moving toward end-of-life, hospice patients are often more deeply conscious of the value of relationships, of faith, and of the importance of the present moment. Yet, sometimes it is difficult to express in words what they want someone else to receive. The Fra Angelico Creative Arts program provides another means of expression for people who are experiencing the mixed emotions of transitioning into end-of-life. Each person on the multi-di...sciplinary team caring for a patient in hospice contributes a valuable piece in the picture of the patient’s final days. So, too, do the significant others in that person’s life, like family, friends, pets and faith community. Pastoral Care provides spiritual and emotional support for patients and families in this context. Patients can express their feelings in colour, shape and texture, and if they choose, they and their families may design, create and share together. It provides a safe space where they can connect, remember, face the oncoming changes and renew their courage. The Fra Angelico Creative Arts program is supported by The Mary Potter Foundation, and is available to patients at both Calvary North Adelaide and Central Districts Hospitals. 21.01.2022 We understand that having surgery can be a daunting prospect for some. Our perioperative staff are warm and reassuring; looking after patients during this time from the minute they are admitted, to when they leave recovery to head to home or to the ward for a longer stay. They work closely with the surgeon, anaesthetist and other staff to provide individualised care for all patients. Perioperative Clinical Manager Linda says I have the privilege of building a rapport with a... patient before their procedure and being the calming influence during what can be a stressful time. This week is Perioperative Nurses Week, and we want to thank all our perioperative staff who care for our patients and make them feel comfortable.

20.01.2022 It was a long journey in 1885 from the dark slums of nineteenth century industrial England to the sunny shores and oppressive heat of Sydney. Six pioneering Sisters immediately set to work nursing the sick, running a soup kitchen, a night refuge, a school for the visually impaired, a parish school and providing social services to those in need. Soon they would establish the first of many hospitals on our shores. These were the indomitable women of the Sisters of the Little Co...mpany of Mary who’s pioneering spirit of being for others started an approach to caring for the sick, the dying and those in need that was to grow and expand across the country. We are Calvary Health Care. Today, we celebrate 135 years since the Sisters sailed into Sydney, and the legacy they have left us all.

19.01.2022 Calvary wishes to advise the Adelaide community that unfortunately a patient who attended the Dr Jones & Partners Medical Imaging clinic, located at the Calvary Adelaide Hospital site on Angas Street in the Adelaide CBD, has tested positive for COVID-19. The patient, who wore a mask and was screened for symptoms and temperature tested by our staff before entry, attended Jones & Partners for an appointment at 8.30am on Monday. Calvary has immediately put into action our COVID...-19 response plan which involves working with SA Health to conduct thorough contact tracing to ensure any person identified a close contact is notified to get tested and isolate for 14 days. A deep clean of the Jones & Partners clinic was conducted overnight on Tuesday and has been determined safe to resume receiving patients. The safety of our patients, their loved ones and our staff is of paramount importance. Please contact the hospital if you have any questions or concerns about the safety measures we have in place. Thank you for following the rules and helping us to keep everybody safe.

18.01.2022 The very talented Nancy has been showing off her 3D latte art skills this week in our new cafe! Learning her craft while working in a Doha cafe, Nancy’s gift has only recently come to light here, with staff very impressed with her cute creations.

17.01.2022 Our new garden is now complete! With thanks to our friends at Lindt Chocolate Shops and Cafés Australia who donated chocolates to our hospital at Easter, we were able to raise funds to rejuvenate an area at the rear of the cancer centre. This new space is now a relaxing area for families and visitors to take a break and get some fresh air. We are very pleased with how it has turned out, with the adjoining area that staff use for their break-time is also looking great.... Thanks to everyone who contributed to this new garden, including Peats Soil & Garden Supplies we are sure it will be enjoyed by many.

17.01.2022 Across Australia, an estimated 2.65 million Australians provide a staggering 42 million hours of unpaid care each week. National Carers Week, from October 11 to 17, is a time to recognise the enormous contribution made by the army of unpaid carers who provide care and support to a family member or friend with disability, mental health condition, chronic condition, terminal illness, an issue with alcohol or other drugs, or who are frail aged. Importantly, National Carer’s We...ek also gives carers a voice to be recognised and supported in what is often a role that is not always a choice. We applaud the commitment, courage and selflessness, and the spirit of being for others of carers everywhere. 16.01.2022 The theme for Pastoral Care week this year is Collaborative Healthcare: Pastoral Carers Complete the Picture, and an image that comes to mind is the metaphor of a thread. It is an apt illustration of how Pastoral Care Practitioners, through their presence, advocacy and building of relationships with the patients, families and staff facilitates an approach to healthcare that is holistic, non-judgmental, fosters understanding and ensures that what happens during the hospital ...experience is absolutely, patient centred. For the patient and their loved ones, the challenges of disease and uncertainty can bring with it, anxiety and distress, and like a patchwork quilt, each contact with a Pastoral Care Practitioner can be likened to stitching together a piece of fabric to support the central design - the patient. Those of us that work in healthcare, contribute to this patchwork quilt, each with our own thread, to convey comfort and healing for those who receive their skills and care. The presence of the Pastoral Care Practitioner is also the thread that connects the patient with the God of their understanding or spirituality, when they have forgotten how to pray or connect with what is meaningful. Patients at end of life may consider to re-member with the Divine or to find peace, as they prepare to transition. The Pastoral Care Practitioner as a thread, is present to assist with however the patient seeks to navigate that space and time. 14.01.2022 The Oncology Spring Raffle has been drawn! A huge congratulations to Sheila who won the large hamper of goodies, and to everyone who bought a ticket and supported the Cancer Centre. We raised just over $1000 and this will go directly to patient comfort items.

13.01.2022 Calvary Central Districts Hospital will be stopping all general visitation from 11.59pm 15 November 2020, in response to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) situation in South Australia rapidly changing. We have made this change in order to effectively manage the risk of infection and protect the health of patients, their friends and family members and staff. Calvary does not take this decision lightly. With SA Health reporting growing instances of community transmission of COVID-19 ...in Adelaide, we must introduce this measure to ensure the safest possible environment for the vulnerable people in our care. What does this mean for patients and their families? Calvary will be stopping all general visitation from 11.59pm 15 November 2020. This means that from midnight yesterday no general visitation will be permitted at the hospital until further notice. Exceptions for obstetrics and paediatrics patients. Admitted babies and children (0-17 years) may have one (1) parent/carer present at all times. For patients who are at end of life, there may be exceptions to visitation restrictions. If you or a loved one are receiving palliative care or are at end of life, please contact the hospital to discuss whether an exceptional visit can be arranged. Our staff will be wearing facemasks. Due to heightened risk, our staff will be required to wear a surgical facemask at all times. Any visitor who is permitted entry as a special exception will be required to wear a facemask at all times. Any person entering will be required to have their temperature checked by staff before entry. Fever is one of the symptoms of COVID-19 and any person with a temperature (greater than 37.5 degrees Celsius) presents a potential risk of transmitting the virus to others. To protect patients and staff from COVID-19 infection, we have had to act quickly. The cooperation of patients and family members in helping our staff manage the risk of infection to the people in our care has been excellent. 12.01.2022 Calvary Central Districts Hospital is pleased to announce an easing of visitor restrictions, consistent with the latest advice from SA Health. From 27 November 2020, one (1) visitor per patient each day will be allowed. Visitors will be required to undertake screening before entering the hospital, wear a facemask at all times while on site, and limit their visit to the patient’s room only. Other restrictions, requirements and special exceptions are outlined below. ... We understand that visitor restrictions can be difficult for patients and their families. We are pleased to be able to take this next step in easing restrictions and will continue to ease restrictions, consistent with SA Health advice, as soon as it is safe to do so. What does this mean for patients and their families? Any one (1) visitor will be permitted to visit each day. From 27 November 2020, any one (1) visitor per patient will be allowed to visit until further notice. Exceptions for paediatrics patients. Admitted children (0-17 years) may have one (1) parent/carer present at all times. For patients who are at end of life, there may be exceptions to visitation restrictions. If you or a loved one are receiving palliative care or are at end of life, please contact the hospital to discuss whether an exceptional visit can be arranged. 11.01.2022 Today on the 11th day at the 11th hour we honour the memory of those who died or who were injured in wars and armed conflicts. On this day 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare. More than 330,000 Australians served overseas during this time and more than 60,000 died. One of the first flowers to bloom on the devastated battlefields of Flanders was the Red Poppy. Its bright red colour symbolised the blood shed duri...ng the horrific conflict, but also the hope of new life. The presence of these resilient bright red blooms on broken ground lead to the poppy becoming the symbol of remembrance day. Lest we forget.

11.01.2022 NAIDOC Week 2020 (8-15 November) sees celebrations held across Australia to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, who have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. The 2020 NAIDOC Week theme Always Was, Always Will Be acknowledges that hundreds of Nations and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures cov...ered this continent. All were managing the land - the biggest estate on earth - to sustainably provide for their future. As part of Calvary’s own journey of reconciliation we commissioned Thomas Croft, a Barngarla man born in Whyalla, to create a design to remind us of the centrality of the importance of reconciliation, community and care. The image reminds us that we heal when we celebrate our First Peoples as a river offering life to our communities.

10.01.2022 We were due to celebrate the birthday of the Venerable Mary Potter this evening, with the highlight being the annual staff awards ceremony. While this part of the celebration will be rescheduled to another time, we were still able to enjoy some delicious cake, as the Executive team delivered slices to staff and nursing students throughout the hospital.

09.01.2022 Happy World Kindness Day! A kind word, small act of kindness, or even just a smile can make such a difference to someone’s happiness. When someone’s kindness or helpful gesture redirects your attitude, and then your better attitude rubs off on another, and so on, and so on - this is the Butterfly Effect. Throughout World Kindness Week, we have had these colourful butterflies available for patients, visitors and staff to write a message of kindness, a thank you note, a quote ...- anything that might uplift someone walking past who will read. The butterflies were then put up in the foyers of our hospitals and state office, as well as at Flora McDonald Retirement Community. There were some beautiful messages written, and we thank all those who got involved. The butterflies will still be available today, so feel free to add your own touch if you are at one of the sites today. See more

09.01.2022 Premier Steven Marshall today announced a lifting of the current restrictions on non-urgent surgical procedures. Calvary SA hospitals will be ready to proceed with all procedures from Monday 23 November 2020. In the interest of protecting the health and wellbeing of our patients, staff and specialist partners, the restrictions introduced on 15 November 2020 will remain in place across all Calvary sites until further notice. These include: No visitors permitted to enter a Ca...lvary South Australia facility until further notice. (Special exceptions are in place for paediatric patients, as well as for people who are receiving palliative care or who are at end of life.) Face masks will be worn by every staff member and specialist at all times while on site; and we encourage the public to do so too. Screening of all patients, exempt visitors (as above), staff, and specialists will remain in place Reminder: If you are feeling unwell in the lead up to your procedure or appointment; please stay at home, advise your specialist or the hospital by phone, and get tested for COVID-19.

05.01.2022 It’s Nursing in the Community Week, which raises awareness of how nurses can support people to stay safe at home, and their impact on the well-being of individuals and those in local communities. Caron has been a community nurse for over thirteen years, and now provides ‘Hospital in the Home’ services with Calvary Community Care. We work with a diverse range of people, across different ages and health needs. Some don’t have family members and I might be the only person they ...see beyond Meals on Wheels. Others have family members close by, who feel reassured that their loved one is receiving the care they need in the comfort and privacy of their own home. Some people have mobility issues or wounds that they feel self-conscience about. Our team cares for people with a range of health needs including wound or medication management, stomal therapy and palliative care. I feel privileged to be able to interact with people and see them within the context of own lives. To be able to care for them in their home environment, surrounded by their belongings, gives me a full picture of the person and their needs, and also helps me to link them with other services and networks that will support them into the future. 02.01.2022 When preparing for surgery, the handwashing (surgical scrub) procedure that surgeons and staff undergo initially takes a full 5 minutes, with shorter washes in between each patient. They meticulously scrub their fingers, knuckles, palms, backs of hands, wrists, and forearms with clinical-grade soaps, detergents or alcohol solution. This ensures that before putting on gloves, hands are as clean as possible to reduce the risk of infection for patients. While we don’t have to go to this extent with our handwashing, it is a good reminder on Global Handwashing Day to include all areas of our hands and wrists when we wash our hands, for around as long as it takes to sing ‘Happy birthday’ twice.
