25.01.2022 Today marks the beginning of National Reconciliation Week - an important time for Australians to think about our shared history with First Peoples and consider how we might together contribute to the work of reconciliation. This week is also National Palliative Care Week. This years theme is Palliative Care: Its more than you think. 24.01.2022 It was a long journey in 1885 from the dark slums of nineteenth century industrial England to the sunny shores and oppressive heat of Sydney. Six pioneering Sisters immediately set to work nursing the sick, running a soup kitchen, a night refuge, a school for the visually impaired, a parish school and providing social services to those in need. Soon they would establish the first of many hospitals on our shores. These were the indomitable women of the Sisters of the Little Co...mpany of Mary who’s pioneering spirit of being for others started an approach to caring for the sick, the dying and those in need that was to grow and expand across the country. We are Calvary Health Care. Today, we celebrate 135 years since the Sisters sailed into Sydney, and the legacy they have left us all.

24.01.2022 Today is Global Handwashing Day and this year’s theme, Hand Hygiene for All highlights the importance of handwashing. The COVID-19 pandemic provides a stark reminder that one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of viruses is also one of the simplest: hand hygiene, especially handwashing with soap and warm water for 20 seconds. Don’t forget to wash your hands today with soap and water to stop the spread of viruses.... #GlobalHandWashingDay #HandHygieneforAll

24.01.2022 Thanks to the bloomin’ marvellous team at Events ACT, patients, visitors and staff at Calvary’s Canberra hospitals and health facilities are now enjoying the legacy of the city’s Floriade festival. Covid-19 forced organisers of the annual spring festival to run the event as a ‘tulip trail’ around different city locations instead of the traditional en masse plantings at Commonwealth Park. But the change of approach didn’t stop the tradition of gifting tulips at the end of the ...festival to provide some colour and joy to those in hospitals and aged care centres across the capital. Floriade finished on Sunday and teams have been out and about to cut and deliver blooms to Calvary Public Hospital Bruce (pictured), Calvary Bruce Private Hospital, Calvary John James Hospital and Clare Holland House.

24.01.2022 Imagine going to sleep with perfect eyesight, and waking up the next day blind. People might not associate diabetes with eye health, but as Australian of the Year Dr James Muecke explains, this disease has far reaching and serious consequences. The good news? Type 2 Diabetes is preventable if we are all up for the challenge.... https://www.canberratimes.com.au//no-more-sweet-talking-/ (Image with thanks to Matt Turner - SA Weekend)

23.01.2022 Like their hospital colleagues, staff in Calvarys community and residential aged care services do their utmost to keep people safe and provide excellent, personalised service and support for those in their care. Today, we join our colleagues everywhere in celebrating Aged Care Employee Day. Across Calvary, more than 3000 staff provide quality care and comfort to our seniors and frail aged. They include nurses, care workers, allied health professionals, hospitality teams, dr...ivers, cleaners, laundry staff, leisure and lifestyle officers, administration teams and volunteers. Tom Webb is one of them, and finds his job as a personal care worker both challenging and rewarding: It requires great patience, endurance and mental fortitude. It forces me to be a better person, giving unique insights into life that I can harness. It clears my mind and places any personal troubles into perspective. I feel it's truly a privilege to help those who have lived such extensive lives. 22.01.2022 Cancellation of Non-Urgent Elective Surgery in Private Hospitals On Wednesday 25 March 2020 the Australian Government released the statement National Cabinet has agreed to extend the deadline for the suspension of semi urgent Category 2 and 3 elective surgeries in private hospitals to 11.59pm on 1 April 2020. Procedures booked between Friday 27 March through to 1 April will proceed as currently planned, unless your Doctor has had a change of circumstances and can no longer ...undertake the procedure. Calvary has asked that the Doctors rooms make contact with people affected, to inform them of the changes as they relate to them. We understand your concerns, and thank you again for your patience and understanding during this very difficult time.

22.01.2022 In order to effectively manage the risk of COVID-19 infection and protect the health of our patients and staff, Calvary is introducing routine screening and temperature checks. This will be for all people, including staff, upon entry at our hospital, from 2 April 2020. We thank you for your cooperation in keeping the people in our care safe. For the latest updates please visit www.calvarycoronavirusupdates.org.au

21.01.2022 As Easter approaches, we find ourselves and our world in a very different place from previous years. For many of us, Easter is usually an opportunity to travel, visit and be with our loved ones. While this year, restrictions mean we cannot visit our loved ones in person, we can take the opportunity to reach out and be present at this time by making a phone call, sending an email or SMS message and/or putting a card in the post. Such acts of kindness can have a big impact on... reducing the effects of social isolation, particularly at this time. We thank our staff who will be working to keep the people in our care connected and safe this Easter, and remind everyone to help us by following our directions. Easter is a time for hope and new beginnings. Together, we can reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection and keep Calvary a safe and healing place for all.

21.01.2022 Some visitors surprised the staff and patients today to share some chocolates and Christmas spirit.

21.01.2022 Across our Calvary hospitals we would normally have around 1123 volunteers assisting us with a range of activities. Things like pruning the hedges or roses, putting together document packs, offering a snack in oncology; there are many ways that this dedicated group assist us to provide care to our patients and their families. Unfortunately with the COVID-19 restrictions in place, this group has not been able to continue as usual, and we miss them dearly. We miss the intangibl...e way they help us each day, but mostly we miss their smiles and their friendship. We miss their extraordinary range of personalities, their diverse skills and life experiences. We know our patients miss them, and we know that they are missing each other. We have put in place several mechanisms for volunteers to keep in touch with us and their peers, and we hope that over the coming months the valued connections that have been made will remain. We look forward to the time that we will be able to welcome back this effervescent group, and continue to offer the highest quality patient care, supported by our most valued volunteer friends.

21.01.2022 If you are planning to visit one of our hospitals or residential aged care communities, please check current restrictions in place first by visiting the link: www.calvarycoronavirusupdates.org.au

20.01.2022 This week is National Volunteer Week and we're proud of our 1,124 volunteers, who work tirelessly to support our communities during what has been an extraordinarily challenging year for all Australians. Our volunteers cannot attend our usual National Volunteer Week celebration events this year due to COVID-19 restrictions; however our Volunteer Managers have gone above and beyond to create innovative ways for our volunteer communities to stay connected with each other, and fo...r us to say thank you while we are apart. Jacob, pictured far right, says that "Volunteering at Calvary Hospital Kogarah has been an incredible journey. It is without a doubt one of the most insightful experiences I have experienced throughout my life. I started my volunteer work in June 2018 assisting the physiotherapists in the Palliative Care gym. From the very first moment I walked into the gym, I absolutely fell in love with the place. Thank you to Jacob and all our volunteers for your passion, commitment and dedication. 19.01.2022 Today is World Hand Hygiene Day and a timely reminder that washing your hands can help save lives. Washing your hands with soap and water for 40-60 seconds or using an alcohol based hand sanitiser for 20-30 seconds can prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other viruses and bacteria including colds and flu. Hand Hygiene is one of the most effective actions to reduce the spread of pathogens and prevent infections, including the COVID-19 virus.... You can play a critical role in fighting COVID-19 by adopting frequent hand hygiene as part of your day-to-day practices. Wash your hands often throughout the day to prevent the spread. 18.01.2022 Calvary acknowledges the Prime Ministers announcement today cancelling all non-urgent elective surgery across public and private hospitals from midnight tonight. If you are currently booked for surgery with Calvary you will be contacted by y...our treating doctor. We thank you for your understanding and patience in this difficult time.

16.01.2022 Today is Dying to Know Day. This year more than ever weve learned about the importance of staying connected and having early conversations about living and dying. When those close to us understand what we value most it can help them to support our choices when we approach the end of our life. This is a conversation that can begin at any time and continue as our needs change over time. You can read more about Dying to Know Day and some online events at https://bit.ly/2DLkoCo

15.01.2022 ACT residents are strongly advised not to travel to Greater Sydney at this time NSW has seen a relatively small, but daily increase in confirmed COVID-19 ...cases in the past few weeks. This advice is in recognition of the fact that the risk to Canberrans of contracting COVID-19 in Greater Sydney, and potentially bringing it back to the ACT with them, is currently higher than we would like. Avoiding unnecessary travel is just another measure we can take to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19. This is in addition to maintaining physical distancing, practising good hand and respiratory hygiene, staying at home if we're unwell and getting tested if we have symptoms of COVID19. Canberrans are also reminded that the Victorian border is currently closed. As has been the case for several weeks, ACT residents are strongly advised not to travel to Victoria at this time. Travel to Victoria should only be done for absolutely essential reasons. Anyone returning back to the ACT from Victoria are required to undertake a mandatory 14 day quarantine. More information on our Travel page www.covid19.act.gov.au/travel

14.01.2022 We understand that having surgery can be a daunting prospect for some. Our perioperative staff are warm and reassuring; looking after patients during this time from the minute they are admitted, to when they leave recovery to head to home or to the ward for a longer stay. They work closely with the surgeon, anaesthetist and other staff to provide individualised care for all patients. Perioperative Clinical Manager Linda says I have the privilege of building a rapport with a... patient before their procedure and being the calming influence during what can be a stressful time. This week is Perioperative Nurses Week, and we want to thank all our perioperative staff who care for our patients and make them feel comfortable.

12.01.2022 This Antimicrobial Awareness Week (18-24 November) we are joining health organisations around the world to promote the appropriate and safe use of antibiotics. This year's theme is Antimicrobials: handle with care. Antimicrobials are very precious and antibiotic resistance is a growing threat. Everybody can be part of the solution - whenever antimicrobials must be used, they must be used with care. The future of antimicrobials depends on all of us!... Antibiotic resistance happens when an antibiotic stops working effectively against bacteria without effective antibiotics some infections could be impossible to treat. 12.01.2022 In good times and in bad, pastoral carers in Calvary’s hospitals, retirement communities and aged care services quietly go about their mission to care for patients’ and residents’ spiritual needs. It’s been especially challenging this year and never more important to find hope and meaning in daily life. The men and women in our pastoral care teams across the country are an important part of our holistic and interdisciplinary approach to care and during Pastoral Care Week (2...5-31 October) we celebrate their significant contribution. Glen Renton is an integral part of the care team at Calvary Ryde Retirement Community and shares a special connection with residents. It’s my job to make sure that their spiritual needs are met. I just want to make sure everyone’s okay, and they are enjoying life as they should. If I can make them smile for the day, I’ve done my job. You can read more about Glen’s story at https://bit.ly/2TkPcPg

12.01.2022 Across Australia, an estimated 2.65 million Australians provide a staggering 42 million hours of unpaid care each week. National Carers Week, from October 11 to 17, is a time to recognise the enormous contribution made by the army of unpaid carers who provide care and support to a family member or friend with disability, mental health condition, chronic condition, terminal illness, an issue with alcohol or other drugs, or who are frail aged. Importantly, National Carer’s We...ek also gives carers a voice to be recognised and supported in what is often a role that is not always a choice. We applaud the commitment, courage and selflessness, and the spirit of being for others of carers everywhere. You can read more carer’s stories on the National Carers Week 2020 website at https://carersweek.com.au/your-stories/

10.01.2022 With the COVID-19 situation continuing to improve in the ACT, we are further easing visitation restrictions at Calvary John James Hospital. From tomorrow, 3 June 2020, we are allowing two visitors per patient to visit each day, with one visitor only at a time. For babies and children, one parent or carer may be present at all times, and an additional one visitor may visit for up to one hour each day. Your safety remains our primary responsibility. 10.01.2022 During NAIDOC Week 2020 (8-15 November) celebrations are held across Australia each year to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, who have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. The 2020 NAIDOC Week theme Always Was, Always Will Be acknowledges that hundreds of Nations and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islan...der cultures covered this continent. All were managing the land - the biggest estate on earth - to sustainably provide for their future. As part of Calvary’s own journey of reconciliation, we commissioned Thomas Croft, a Barngarla man, born in Whyalla, South Australia, to create a design to remind us of the centrality of the importance of reconciliation, community and care. The image reminds us that we heal when we celebrate our First Peoples as a river offering life to our communities.

08.01.2022 Important advice for healthcare and aged care workers in relation to South Western Sydney Have you been to the NSW Local Government Areas of Fairfield, ...Campbelltown and Liverpool recently? And do you work, volunteer or visit people in high-risk settings, like a hospital or aged care facility? If you answered YES to both questions, we strongly advise you NOT to attend these settings for a period of 14 days after leaving Fairfield, Campbelltown and Liverpool. COVID-19 outbreaks are happening in South Western Sydney and its your responsibility to protect members of community who are more vulnerable to disease. In addition to staying away from these facilities, be alert for COVID-19 symptoms, like fever, cough, sore throat and shortness of breath. If symptoms develop, immediately self-isolate at home and arrange to get tested. People who work in other health settings, such as GPs and other community health practitioners, can continue to deliver services. However, they should remain vigilant, and if symptoms develop, should self-isolate and get tested. Were continuing to closely monitor the situation in South Western Sydney and will provide further advice to the community as needed. More information www.covid19.act.gov.au
