25.01.2022 This week Occupational therapists celebrate their profession with the theme Resilience: Supporting our communities to rebuild, recover and re-engage. 2020 has seen droughts, bushfires and the global pandemic and Occupational Therapists have been called to support people to participate in activities they find meaningful in helping communities through disaster recovery. As disaster survivors reengage in disrupted occupations (such as daily routines, activities and employment), they can better cope with stress and be supported through their recovery.

22.01.2022 Sharing our commitment to Advance Care Planning.

20.01.2022 This is the sunrise some of our patients would have seen from their window this morning! Simply breathtaking. Hoping it nourished their spirits!

20.01.2022 Today on the 11th day at the 11th hour we honour the memory of those who died or who were injured in wars and armed conflicts. On this day 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare. More than 330,000 Australians served overseas during this time and more than 60,000 died. One of the first flowers to bloom on the devastated battlefields of Flanders was the Red Poppy. Its bright red colour symbolised the blood shed duri...ng the horrific conflict, but also the hope of new life. The presence of these resilient bright red blooms on broken ground lead to the poppy becoming the symbol of remembrance day. Lest we forget.

16.01.2022 NATIONAL CLOSE THE GAP DAY: Today is National Close the Gap day which is observed annually on the third Thursday in March and advocates for health equity of Australian Indigenous people and also educating the public about health issues and barriers faced.

15.01.2022 Whilst many people express a wish to remain at home in their final months, when the time comes, adequate palliative and end of life care supports are often not available. Palliative care nurse Caroline Belfanti, of Calvary Kogarah in Sydney’s South, says there are too many barriers and challenges in the current system and that many people often feel like they are a burden. Caroline, who has worked in palliative care for almost three decades, spoke at the Canberra launch of C...HA’s new report Out of Hospital Care in Australia Advancing Health’s Missing Sector and said we must fix the gap in service provision and allow people to be treated within their homes. 14.01.2022 CALVARY taking steps with METAL RECYCLING Thanks for Infrabuild Recycling for our first scrap metal recycling cheque. We have gone from paying to have scrap metal taken away, to having it taken away at no cost, to earning a small return for recycling two or more tonnes of scrap metal. Keeping scrap metal items separate from general waste when staff take rubbish to the tip area to dispose of in the corner next to Holistic Healing would be a big help. General non-metal waste items such as broken plastic office chairs, for example, can be placed directly into the large wheelie bins where possible. Anything that is a mix of non-metal and metal can be left in the tip area for maintenance to separate. Staff assistance to reduce, reuse and recycle the resources we use is most appreciated.

13.01.2022 Today is Global Handwashing Day and this year’s theme, Hand Hygiene for All highlights the importance of handwashing. The COVID-19 pandemic provides a stark reminder that one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of viruses is also one of the simplest: hand hygiene, especially handwashing with soap and warm water for 20 seconds. Don’t forget to wash your hands today with soap and water to stop the spread of viruses.... #GlobalHandWashingDay #HandHygieneforAll

12.01.2022 It was a long journey in 1885 from the dark slums of nineteenth century industrial England to the sunny shores and oppressive heat of Sydney. Six pioneering Sisters immediately set to work nursing the sick, running a soup kitchen, a night refuge, a school for the visually impaired, a parish school and providing social services to those in need. Soon they would establish the first of many hospitals on our shores. These were the indomitable women of the Sisters of the Little Co...mpany of Mary who’s pioneering spirit of being for others started an approach to caring for the sick, the dying and those in need that was to grow and expand across the country. We are Calvary Health Care. Today, we celebrate 135 years since the Sisters sailed into Sydney, and the legacy they have left us all.

12.01.2022 PASTORAL CARE WEEK: October 25th marks the beginning of Pastoral Care Week. The week acknowledges the integral role pastoral care plays in compassionate, patient centered care. Patients often feel vulnerable and reflective as they face health concerns. The calm presence of a pastoral carer can offer confidential support to find hope and meaning during challenging times. It is appropriate that the theme for 2020 is Collaborative Healthcare. 2020 has been an unusual year... complicated by COVID-19 concerns and commotion. Everyone in healthcare has been affected by taking on extra challenges and increased workloads. At Kogarah, all the disciplines have accepted the COVID -19 crisis as an opportunity to expand their capacity to bring healing and care to our patients, families and each other. Pastoral Care Manager Mary Ashton said While our team is credited for the pastoral care we provide, we acknowledge all our staff who have been essential in the compassionate care and holding of our patients. They say the whole is far greater than the sum of all its parts. This is truly the case in Kogarah. Mary Potter’s vision of being for others is alive and well in Kogarah.

04.01.2022 NSW recorded seven locally acquired cases of COVID-19 in the 24 hours to 8pm last night, with an additional four cases in returned travellers in hotel quarantin...e. Six of the locally acquired cases are linked to the Avalon cluster. Investigations continue into the source of the Avalon cluster, which now numbers 122. The source of the other locally acquired case remains under investigation and contact tracing is underway. This person is a firefighter who lives on the Northern Beaches. NSW Health is working with Fire and Rescue NSW to ensure all contacts are identified and tested. This brings the total number of cases in NSW to 4,669 since the beginning of the pandemic. There were 23,933 tests reported to 8pm last night, compared with the previous day’s total of 39,133. NSW has now exceeded four million tests conducted since the start of the pandemic. Over the past week alone, NSW has recorded almost 350,000 tests. NSW Health thanks the community for their excellent response in coming forward for testing and following public health advice. Every person who comes forward for testing is playing an important role in helping to contain the spread of COVID-19. NSW Health also thanks the many people currently self-isolating, which we appreciate is difficult. However, if you are a close contact of a case, it is critical you continue to self-isolate for 14 days since exposure, even if you receive a negative test result. Of the new cases to 8pm last night: Seven cases are locally acquired, and of these - Six cases are linked to the Avalon cluster - One further case is under investigation Four cases were acquired overseas and are in hotel quarantine. NSW Health is treating 107 COVID-19 cases, none of whom are in intensive care. Most cases (99 per cent) are being treated in non-acute, out-of-hospital care, including returned travellers in the Special Health Accommodation. The state’s sewage surveillance program has detected traces of the virus in the Warriewood, Hornsby Heights and Brooklyn catchment areas. NSW Health is aware of recently positive cases in these areas, but urges local residents to come forward for testing if they have even the mildest COVID-19 symptoms. COVID-19 cases linked to the Avalon cluster have visited a growing list of locations across Sydney. A full list of locations and public transport routes, and the associated public health advice, is available from the NSW Government website at https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/latest-news-and-updates. It’s vital that people keep up their guard against COVID-19 over the holiday period, by limiting social interactions where feasible and following recommended infection control practices, including physical distancing and hand hygiene. Don’t risk passing on COVID-19 for the sake of one social gathering. If you are feeling at all unwell, or have even the mildest symptoms, stay home and don’t go to the event. Testing clinics will remain open over the holiday period, including today and heading into New Year’s Day. There are more than 350 COVID-19 testing locations across NSW, many of which are open seven days a week. To find your nearest clinic visit https://www.nsw.gov.au//how-to-protect-yourself-an/clinics or contact your GP.

02.01.2022 Across Australia, an estimated 2.65 million Australians provide a staggering 42 million hours of unpaid care each week. National Carers Week, from October 11 to 17, is a time to recognise the enormous contribution made by the army of unpaid carers who provide care and support to a family member or friend with disability, mental health condition, chronic condition, terminal illness, an issue with alcohol or other drugs, or who are frail aged. Importantly, National Carer’s We...ek also gives carers a voice to be recognised and supported in what is often a role that is not always a choice. We applaud the commitment, courage and selflessness, and the spirit of being for others of carers everywhere. You can read carer’s stories on the National Carers Week 2020 website at https://carersweek.com.au/your-stories/

01.01.2022 During NAIDOC Week 2020 (8-15 November) celebrations are held across Australia each year to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, who have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. The 2020 NAIDOC Week theme Always Was, Always Will Be acknowledges that hundreds of Nations and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islan...der cultures covered this continent. All were managing the land - the biggest estate on earth - to sustainably provide for their future. As part of Calvary’s own journey of reconciliation, we commissioned Thomas Croft, a Barngarla man, born in Whyalla, South Australia, to create a design to remind us of the centrality of the importance of reconciliation, community and care. The image reminds us that we heal when we celebrate our First Peoples as a river offering life to our communities.

01.01.2022 Celebrating Valentine’s Day. Thanks Suzy for this beautiful display for all our patients, visitors and staff!
