16.01.2022 Thank you to whoever built these stone Cairns (Gaelic) found at Flaggy Crossing this past week. It must have taken great patience and skill to balance the individual rocks in this way. It is a timely reminder of how important balance is going to be, as we move forward now that the Council-instigated Kehoe Myers report, into engineered solutions for the crossings in Cambanoora Gorge, has been released. The time has come for Killarney, residents in the Gorge and the general p...ublic to decide the future of the Cambanoora Gorge. It is time to open up the conversation, so all can be heard. We are all very good at divvying up the Gorge into little bits: private property, public road, public road verge, the crossings, the river, the national park sections etc. It is important at this point to clarify what is exactly, the topic of conversation. Private individuals may own various private property in the Gorge. But the topic of conversation here is the publicly owned areas of the Gorge i.e. the road, the road verge, the river, the crossings and the national park sections. We must all understand and acknowledge that because we are talking about publicly owned assets, the conversation may go far beyond the borders of Killarney and the Southern Downs Shire. Any natural asset this beautiful and important evokes strong emotions and a sense of ownership by all who know it, and no doubt, by all those who will come to know it. As we navigate through this conversation, let us strive to maintain a sense of unity and respect for each other, as we all express our opinions in a respectful, non-threatening and factual way. Like the stones in these Cairns, if we all contribute in a balanced and positive way to the conversation, we can achieve a whole, that is greater than its individual parts. So thank you, Cairn Builder, whoever you are.

13.01.2022 CONCRETE CULVERTS? Like many of Australia's iconic destinations (Fraser Island, Cradle Mountain, Uluru etc), Cambanoora Gorge is experiencing a significant growth in 4WD tourism. This increased level of 4WD activity is having impacts on the eco-system, the turbidity of the river, survival of riverlife, the degradation and constant maintenance of the road, and also on the residents. As a result, the Council commissioned a report to investigate solutions that would address the...se issues. The full Kehoe Myer report can be obtained on the Southern Down's website (the report is an attachment to the minutes of the Council meeting held on 29 September). A copy of the recommendations in that report is posted here for your information. Kehoe Myer Consulting Engineers has recommended the installation of 12 concrete culverts in the Cambanoora Gorge. The report outlines that the work would start in 2020 and would take six consecutive years of civil works to complete. The Council has now opened the Public Consultation phase of the process and they want to hear from all members of the community. Over the coming weeks and months, we will be looking into whether the installation of 12 concrete culverts over a period of six years, is the best way forward for the Gorge, Killarney and the thousands of people who come to the Gorge every year. We will also be exploring other viable options that do not involve concrete culverts, or the disruption of traffic through to Killarney businesses, for the good part of six consecutive years. We would like to hear from YOU! Tell us what you love about the Gorge, why you come here. Tell us what you think of this issue so we can gather alternative ideas and solutions.
12.01.2022 If visiting the Gorge, please be advised that there is a fire ban in place.

01.01.2022 On 17 October Michael Nolan of Warwick Daily News published an article quoting myself as President of Cambanoora Gorge Management Group. Mr Nolan did not speak to me prior to publishing the article. I did provide Mr Nolan some written excerpts from the Kehoe Myers report. I reiterate I did not speak to him regarding this issue. Therefore I want to put on record that, I did not weigh in on plans to address traffic along this road. As an individual I provided a response to an... invitation from Kehoe Myers to contribute. I did this as an individual, along with many other individuals who were invited to contribute. Mr Nolan has said that I favour the Seventh Option. I did not say this. It is not my preferred option. It is not true. I can only surmise that Mr Nolan has chosen to publish inaccurate material in a further attempt to divide our local community. Kieth Murray See more
