25.01.2022 The musicians of Highton Strings have been hard at work recording this year's Nine Lessons and Carol Service, which will be online. The Service will feature performances of much-loved carols including Duborg's rarely performed 'Sound the Trumpet’, Debussy arranged for Harp, an unaccompanied Bach sarabande for Flute and a Cello ensemble performance of ‘Silent Night’. Join us at 8.00pm on Wednesday 9 December for what promises to be a deeply moving occasion after such a difficult year. Registration will be available soon. #CGSMusic

24.01.2022 Congratulations to Mathieu (Year 11) who was awarded his LMusA late last year. Examiners found Mathieu’s performance of Paganini, Bloch, Ravel and Mendelssohn 'compelling...full of appropriate energy and vigour....exhibiting mastery of the technical and stylistic elements’. An impressive feat under challenging conditions, well done Mathieu. #CGSMusic

20.01.2022 Our Makerspace students had a challenge today to make something that moves. They did a great job being creative and using a mixture of electric motors as well manual methods. Next Tuesday will be our second last Makerspace for 2020 and we will be embroidering a Christmas creation. The first 15 middle school students to arrive to M34 at lunch time will be welcome to join in us.

20.01.2022 A huge thank you to Darcy in Year 10 for working tirelessly during his recess breaks to finish this gorgeous Library cat for Ms Tait. We felt that he deserved naming rights and has named him Magnus 2.0 in honour of Ms Tait’s actual cat Magnus. #CGSLibrary

19.01.2022 The Big Red Bow sales have wrapped up! We have received overwhelming responses and we would like to thank the school community for their generous support towards this fundraiser. The money raised will go towards sponsoring the Year 5 graduation tops. It has been a tough year for the Year 5s and on behalf of Friends of Norge, we want to send them our warmest congratulations and wish them all the best in middle school next year.

19.01.2022 #ThrowbackThursday from our School Historian Dr David Bird: Regan Davis, Senior Grounds Officer, recently examined some excavations on the Junior School campus Norge and concluded that there was evidence of an early water feature on this property, which was built in 1919 by the owner Thorold Gunnersen. Archival research indicates that there was a pond on the eastern side of the property and Thorold’s daughter Margaret remembered the children of the family playing on this po...nd in the 1920s with a raft and a rowing boat called Bumble Bee, named after what was then the fastest speed-boat in the world. When the property began to be sub-divided during the Depression, most of this extensive pond became part of a neighbouring property. It still existed in the 1980s. Norge was acquired by Camberwell Grammar for the use of the Junior School in 1981 (pictured here at the time of that acquisition).

18.01.2022 The Year 12 Art and Studio Art Exhibition is now on in the Williams Gallery and "Dorset" Arts House. The students have produced some amazing work, the bulk of which was produced in isolation. The talent and resilience displayed by these students is very impressive. #CGSArt

15.01.2022 #ThrowbackThursday from our Archivist and Historian Dr David Bird: Camberwell Grammar made the welcome move to Mont Albert Road in February 1935, but the campus contained only Roystead, its associated outbuildings, and the new William Angliss Building (still incomplete on the day of official opening). Soon a Prep School building was constructed and further development on the site has never ceased. This aerial view was taken fifty years after the move when the School had gain...ed possession of Highton as a music school, retaining its tennis court, and the house Tara for various uses. Kingussie was also now being utilised as the centre of the School’s Asian Studies. The largest structures on the campus during the 1980s aside from Roystead were the Memorial Hall, opened in 1958, and the David Dyer Physical Education Centre, opened by Premier Hamer in 1974. Both of these significant structures have now been replaced by the Performing Arts Centre from 1997 and the Sports Centre from 2017. See more

05.01.2022 #ThrowbackThursday from our Archivist and Historian Dr David Bird: On Remembrance Day, 11 November, we recall those who sacrificed their lives on the field of battle, but there were many who died in the service of their country in other circumstances. Their sacrifices are also worthy of commemoration. One of them was Ivan Lockhart Smith, a Camberwell Grammar Old Boy who attended the School from 1921 (when he was a five-year old) to 1933. He was Dux in 1931 and Captain of Scho...ol, 1932-33. Ivan was also a noted sportsman and is pictured here in the 1931 Athletics team (middle row, 3rd from l.). Working as a legal articled clerk when war broke out in 1939, this former cadet Lieutenant soon joined the Army and was commissioned. In July 1943 the now Major Smith was transferred to the 1st Australian Parachute Battalion in NSW and was undergoing training in October when he was killed in an aircraft crash. Ivan Smith was twenty-eight years old at the time of his death and he is commemorated on the Camberwell Grammar Honour Board along with another thirty-six victims of the Second World War.

03.01.2022 #ThrowbackThursday from our Archivist and Historian Dr David Bird: Camberwell Grammar’s oldest Old Boy, Alan Moore, celebrates his 100th birthday on 20 November, a significant turning point for both Alan himself and for the School. Alan grew up in Camberwell, attending the Burke Road campus from 1928-30 and once war was declared in 1939, he was keen to join the AIF, but under-age. Soon joining the Militia, he participated with distinction in the New Guinea campaign as a commi...ssioned member of the 39th Battalion and other units until his discharge as a Captain in December 1945. Alan spent most of his subsequent working life in Melbourne with the Heinz company. In recent years he has renewed his connection with Camberwell Grammar through the link established between the 39th Australian Infantry Battalion Association and the Camberwell School Army Cadet Unit. Alan was the guest-of-honour at a ceremony In May 2019 during which the Battalion’s banner was presented to the custodianship of the Unit. He is pictured seated to the right of the Association’s president Merren Stockdale, as Deputy Headmaster Rob French presides over the presentation of the banner. See more
